Theatre Delicatessen's Pop-up Henry V in Marylebone

Theatre is something that can work really well in a temporary or unusual space, and this new show by Theatre Delecatessen sounds very promising.

"The vast former offices of BBC London will play host to a summer of extraordinary theatrical events and major sports screenings. Pop Up performance makers Theatre Delicatessen will transform the renowned Marylebone building into an experimental hub for emerging and established theatre practitioners with a unique ‘indoor pleasure garden’ where audiences, artists and sports lovers alike can enjoy live performance, music, installation and Sporting Highlights from the summer of 2012.
Marylebone Gardens will open its doors in May with an immersive, contemporary staging of Henry V by Theatre Delicatessen in the basement of the building. Drawing on promenade and site-specific elements to explore the experience of armed conflict and themes that surround the concept of a ‘just war’, the audience will be plunged into a makeshift underground barracks, immersed in a total theatre environment as the action unfolds all around them.
The company will also be working throughout the season with a number of artists and companies for Summer of Sport, a series of events, performances and installations filling the building and inspired by the Olympics. The summer’s sporting highlights will all be screened in a specially designed pop-up village green inspired by the venue’s location on the site of Marylebone’s 18th Century Pleasure Gardens. Audiences can bring their own picnic and blanket to relax on the indoor lawn as they watch the events
Theatre Delicatessen Associate Artists including designer Katherine Heath, experimental theatre collectives HalfCut and Lab Collective, and movement director Ali Baybutt will be in residence developing new performances to be staged later in the year, including HalfCut’s Shelf-Life, a promenade work of interactive, reflective and absurd installations that represent the various stages of life. Other artists and practitioners will be working in rehearsal spaces and recording studios throughout the building with regular scratches and sharings through into the Autumn.
Jessica Brewster, Co Artistic Director of Theatre Delicatessen, said “We at Theatre Delicatessen are passionate about transforming spaces across the city into new theatre worlds that capture the imaginations of audiences and artists alike. This is our most ambitious programme of work yet, opening with our immersive interpretation of Henry V, through a programme of installations and performances with artists responding to the Summer of Sport, and culminating towards Christmas with our second Theatre Souk which will be even bigger and bolder than our first. There are some amazing things planned for the next year!”"
