Pol Boy's Serendip Sri Lankan Supper Club in Brixton

Sri Lankan dining is coming to Brixton on Saturday 2nd March, when the Serendip supper club takes over the Brixton Pound Cafe for the evening.  It costs just £24 for the evening, to sample a number of shared plates - to be enjoyed 'family style' by the whole table - in a fun atmosphere.  Expect curries, vegetable dishes, rice and lots more from 'Pol Boy' and his friendly supper club!

"Serendip is an Old Persian name for Sri Lanka. It is also the etymological root of the word serendipity. It is said that serendipity is the hungry traveler's strongest ally: many of their most memorable meals issue from the hands of generous strangers. Serendip Supper Club is a space for strangers to discover the joys of Sri Lankan culture through the island’s food.
Rice and curry is the staple food in Sri Lanka which is why many people conflate Sri Lankan cuisine with Indian food. Yet, the food in Sri Lanka is markedly different from the food in India. A proper Sri Lankan meal will consist of an vibrant array of flavours, colours, and textures. Everything is shared on the table. There are no individual meals. Sitting down at dinner with the family will involve six or seven dishes being passed around and the family matriarchs will never allow a plate to be left without food on it for more than a few seconds.
However, Sri Lankan food is not for the unadventurous. Heavily spiced curries, tempered vegetables, and chilli-laden sambols are all full of flavour and certainly pack a punch. Watered down versions are unacceptable. At Serendip Supper Club you will find food that is unapologetically Sri Lankan."

When - Saturday 2nd March 2019
8pm-11pm

Where - Brixton Pound Café, 77 Atlantic Rd, SW9 8PU

Tickets - £24 from EatWith here + it's BYOB!

Secret Samosa Club's Two Week Residency at Great Guns Social in SE1

.
The Secret Samosa Club, a collaboration between Joti Sohi and chef Rick Matharu, will be popping up at Great Guns Social, near Borough Market, from 19th February to 2nd March 2019.  Expect lots of samosas, plus fusion dishes like the Punjabi Cheeseburger, Chaat Fries, and Tandoori Jerk Chicken Lasagne from the award winning chef; really want to try this one!

"Joti Sohi, ex-Management Consultant and now self-made “Samosa Queen” today announces a two-week residency at Great Guns Social, kicking off on February 19th.  Joti, who first tasted creator Rick Matharu’s pastry-filled creations back in her native Canada, knew she had to be the one to bring them to London.  The residency promises a host of quirky home style classics with a Punjabi twist such as Punjabi Cheeseburger Samosas, Chaat Fries, and Tandoori Jerk Chicken Lasagne.
Joti, who is Canadian-born, met Rick in 2005 and the pair hit it off straight away. Since scooping Canada’s prestigious ‘Recipe to Riches’ $250,000 prize, Rick has been busy honing his craft and building a successful brand in Toronto’s competitive restaurant scene. When he isn’t serving Canada’s PM Justin Trudeau, he’s experimenting with new flavours and creations in his test kitchen, creating a new tradition of flavours, heritage and styles.
Rick’s unique creations have drawn widespread acclaim and London will have access to a host of his insanely good dishes which draw on his Punjabi heritage, but into which he injects a big dollop of leftfield craziness, such as the the Butter Chicken Loaded Fries – an outrageous Asian take on traditional Poutine. Or there’s the Punjabi Cheeseburger with Tandoori Bacon – a 6oz beef patty with melted cheddar, tomato, onion, shredded lettuce, sautéed onion and achari mayo, topped with tandoori spice infused bacon.  Insanely good!  And not forgetting the Rajma Bowl - a sort of twist on Mexican nachos using stewed kidney bean curry, topped with cheese, sautéed peppers, onions and corn, served with Indian pico de gallo, a crème fraiche-adobo pepper chutney, crispy onions, coriander and chilli crisps.
Secret Samosa Club at Great Guns Social launches on Tuesday 19th February and will run for two weeks. Chef Rick will be in Borough for the duration of the residency curating daily specials created just for Great Guns."

When - From 19th February to 2nd March 2019

Slaw's Vegan Pop-up Restaurant on Upper Street, N1

Slaw has opened a pop-up - with a view to becoming permanent - at 149 Upper Street, Islington, close to the Ottolenghi restaurant, and pretty much opposite the fire station.  They are open Tuesdays to Sundays for lunch and dinner.  I went in to see them today and I was really impressed by the team and the space.  I tried a couple of things, but I will be going back to eat properly in the next couple of weeks.  It looks great!

"Vegan salad restaurant Slaw will launch a residency on Upper Street in Islington from 1 February. It takes over Scandinavian restaurant group Rök’s former site, following its closure two weeks ago.
The self-described “plant based grab-and-go concept” will take over 149 Upper Street “for at least five months,” slinging highly photogenic salad assemblies that lean on grains, pulses, and legumes as much as vegetables — no meat substitutes, but no lack of consideration for protein, either. Opening little over 100 feet from Ottolenghi’s Islington site — also slinging highly photogenic salad assemblies that lean on grains, pulses, and legumes as much as vegetables — it’s taking on a master at his own game."

When - Tues-Sun until the end of June 2019

The Piadina Project's Fried Chicken & Italian Flatbreads at The Rose & Crown in NW5

The Piadina Project is now in the kitchen at The Rose & Crown in Torriano Avenue, Kentish Town, serving up fried checken with Italian flatbreads - a killer combo, as anyone who has tried their food at street food markets like the Victoria Park Market will confirm.  They'll be at the Rose & Crown for 3 months, serving Tuesdays to Sundays.  So good!

"Simple, special, versatile - handmade street food straight from Romagnola via Lincolnshire
From the moment that I stepped foot into Snack’s in Riccione, the heart of Romagnola, I knew that the much anticipated wait for my first ever piadina was soon to be over. Finally I would get to try this magical Italian flatbread that my Italian Grandfather, Gianni, at length had often spoken to me about. I ordered a piadina with prosciutto crudo in anticipation, whilst I restlessly awaited my order being made right there infront of me. I was totally blown away by the colours & the delights of the fillings available. When it arrived you could see that it was packed with lashings of Italian cream cheese, layers of cured meats and the bright green of the rocket protruding out from the sides. I still remember taking it in my hand and thinking, why on earth do we not have this back home in the UK, and sure enough with each mouthful of piadina that I took, I ended up falling more and more in love with the dish, which then later turned out to be more of an obsession.
In February 2016 I finally decided to bring piadina to the streets of London through The Piadina Project. Fusing my Italian roots whilst incorporating the incredible fresh produce that surrounded my upbringing in Lincolnshire, “the home of agriculture”, I’ve managed to develop a story that's told through the good honest food that I serve, just as it was when I first tasted it, all with my very own Lincolnshire twist."

When - Tues - Sun until April 2019
Tuesday - Friday 5pm - 10pm
Saturday - 1pm - 10pm

Bruno's Bakes & Coffee - A Pop-up French Bakery on Brick Lane

Bruno's Bakes & Coffee is a pop-up independent bakery & coffee shop at 202 Brick Lane (the Bethnal Green Road end, near to Bacon St).  It was created by award winning pastry chef Bruno Breillet, and has previously been open in Rochester, Kent, but has now moved to London with this pop-up, provisionally open until the end of May.  Expect lots of freshly baked French patisserie both sweet and savoury.  Sounds wonderful!

"Bruno's Bakes & Coffee is a small independent bakery/coffee shop specializing in classic French and modern American cakes, tarts and savoury items.
Bruno Breillet is the pastry chef and he makes everything on site.  You could come in on any given day and find a classic Breton Kouign Amann sitting next to a Peanut Butter and Chocolate Pie, or a Strawberry Tart next to a Caramel Popcorn Cheesecake.  We also have a small savory menu based around Croque Monsieurs, perhaps having three or four different kinds to choose from.   Basically, our menu changes constantly depending on Bruno’s mood and of course our customers’ desires.  Bruno has won a Master Chef Live/BBC Good Food Show Bursary Award and has received a total of 5 stars from the Guild of Fine Food’s Great Taste Awards.  He’s been featured in Delicious Magazine and has recipes in the DK book, Chocolate: Indulge Your Inner Chocoholic."
