Profile - The South West Supper Club

Jimmy Garcia is one of London’s most regular supper club organisers.  His South West Supper Club organises at least two events a month, and has evolved from events in his house to taking over bars and shops for the night.

I met him on Sunday to ask about how he got started, and what he’s planning in the future.

Jimmy is 24 and from Leeds.  He started off his culinary career at the Waterton Park Hotel in Wakefield, while he was still at school.  When he was at university he spent his summers working as a chef on yachts in the Mediterranean, where he learnt to cook in confined spaces – a great preparation for supper clubs - before heading to the city to work as a broker.

His first supper clubs were held at home in Balham; he designed an invite, and then put it through all the neighbours’ doors.  Enough responded for it to work and ‘we had some really good nights’.  After a few of these he expanded into a bar in Clapham, where he could work in a bigger space, and since then has moved on to private houses, a café in Tooting, and a wine shop in Balham.

The philosophy is to make a supper club like a club.  He has a loyal group of members, and finds that lots of people come back after they’ve been to one event.  He’s currently working a lot with the ‘wild & foraged’ theme – he’s clearly very excited about the possibilities of using natural ingredients like wild mustard – and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall is one of his main inspirations.

He’s now given up his job in the city, and is devoting himself to food full-time, both in France, where he’s part of a team who run chalet holidays, and in London where he’ll be organising two supper clubs a month.

Jimmy’s now organising supper clubs in the French Alps as well as in London, and has lots of exciting projects lined up for the coming year.  Watch this space!

Jimmy clearly loves what he’s doing and is incredibly passionate about both food and organising supper clubs.  His next two happen in South West London next week – get a ticket if you can!

The South West Supper Club at The Wine Tasting Shop in Balham - NOW FINISHED

The South West Supper Club are holding a supper club in October at the Wine Tasting Shop in Balham.  Jimmy, who runs the supper club, tells me that he's getting a portable unit in to cook in the shop.  The 5 course meal will cost £50, and tt all sounds like it's going to be lots of fun!

Review - South West Supper Club's Wild & Foraged Night in Wandsworth

On Friday I went to the South West Supper Club’s Wild & Foraged night in Wandsworth.  Jimmy Garcia (see earlier) was hosting in the flat of artist Nathan Meyer, who was also on hand to do some waitering, and sell some specially labelled wine.  My friend Jo and I arrived a bit after 7.30.  Outside there was a very welcoming ‘Supper Club Here’ sign on a blackboard.  Then up the stairs to Nathan’s flat on the top floor.

The front room had been turned into the dining room, with 4 tables of six chairs.  It was super-friendly; we didn’t table hop, but we had a great time with the other 4 people on our table.  We were soon swapping glasses of wine, and chattering away about anything from London auctions (Geasby’s in Tooting), Wine, Juliette Binoche, the merits of Barcelona vs. Berlin, and much, much more.

The food was uniformly excellent, and with the canapes we had a four course meal for £30.  The highlights were the Wild Pheasant starter, and the dessert of poached pears (which I asked Jimmy for the recipe for). I know it feels strange in a review to write so little about the food, but take it as read that it was all to a very high standard.  The evening felt like it was about far more than the food!

We finally finished off at about 11pm (I think) and wandered off back towards Clapham Junction.  This is a superb supper club; you’re guaranteed a good night.

South West Supper Club Two Night Dinner & Salsa in Clapham - NOW FINISHED

The South West Supper Club is holding a two night (Friday & Saturday) event at the Secondo bar in Clapham.

"We will have a salsa band playing throughout the evening, and a Salsa demonstration after the meal so you can show us some of your moves!!

Regular organisers the South West Supper Club are back with a very special-sounding event in Tooting - based on wild & foraged food.

The South West Supper Club's 'Wild' Nights in Balham & Wandsworth

33 Pop-up's Two Nights of South West French Dining in Hackney

French pop-up 33 is back for the first Thursday and Friday in April at Avo Hotel in Dalston.  Doors open at 7.30pm - if you need to be later let them know - and you can stay and have fun until 1am.  The bar will be provided by Borough Wines and Clapton Craft.

"33 is popping up again, bringing the flavours and fun of South West French dining to Dalston on 3rd & 4th April.
Our four course menu features some classics from land and sea, as well as delicious dessert from our resident pastry genius, all made with love and designed to foster the conviviality of our region.
It's an intimate venue - the maximum maximum capacity is 20 people, and the largest tables seat six. Smaller groups may be sharing tables with other lovely people, so please drop us a line if you'd like to be with another group.
We open at 7.30 pm, though if you'd like to come later just let us know when you make your booking. We only offer one sitting each night so you won't be rushed off your table. Our bar will be open until 1am so you're welcome to stay and make a night of it.
We always try to cater for special requests or dietary requirements, so if there's anything on the menu you or a member of your party doesn't eat just drop us a line.

The May 'Hop-up' Craft Beer House in Lower Marsh, Waterloo

The pop-up Beer House is returning to Cafe Del Marsh in Lower Marsh, Waterloo on Saturday 9th May 2015, featuring 4 more London brewers - Hammerton (from the North), Pressure Drop (East), Partizan (South) and Weird Beard (West).  There will be lots of bottled beers, plus some amazing Scotch eggs from Scotchtails to soak up all the booze.  Open til 11pm.

Zoe's Ghana Kitchen's 6 Month Residency at The Sun & 13 Cantons in Soho

Zoe's Ghana Kitchen, which started off as a supper club, and progressed through pub residencies to a permanent restaurant in Brixton, is now taking over the kitchen at The Sun & 13 Cantons in Soho for six months, starting Tuesday 4th April.  Expect Ghanaian recipes re-mixed for the modern kitchen, including tempura-battered Okra Fries, and irresistible Pork Ribs in Sticky Plantain Sauce, both of which feature in her first cook book, coming out later this month.  It's serving Tuesdays to Saturdays - be there!

"On Tuesday 4th April, rising star in food Zoe Adjonyoh will bring her contemporary West African food to Soho with a six month residency at The Sun & 13 Cantons.
The new pub popup will showcase Zoe’s traditional Ghanaian recipes re-mixed for the modern kitchen, much-loved from her popular restaurant at Pop Brixton and soon to be shared in her stunning debut cookbook “Zoe’s Ghana Kitchen”, which will be published by Octopus Books on Thursday 20th April.
Visitors to Zoe’s Ghana Kitchen takeover at The Sun & 13 Cantons can take their pick from modern small plates ideal for sharing such as slow-cooked Red Red Stew, and main plates including Zoe’s legendary Jollof Fried Chicken and Grilled Lamb Cutlets with Spiced Peanut Sauce. Her signature Love Chin Chin Banoffee Pie, made using the West African snack sensation as well as Divine dark chocolate, is sure to provide a sweet ending to the meal.
Those looking for a few light bites with their pints can enjoy an array of bar snacks like marinated Kelewele, tempura-battered Okra Fries, and irresistible Pork Ribs in Sticky Plantain Sauce. Pub guests will be able to take the menu home with them thanks to Zoe’s upcoming cookbook, and can also stock up on jars of her house shito and jollof relish for their own kitchen.
Zoe Adjonyoh is on a mission to bring African food to the masses. Born to a Ghanaian father and Irish mother, the writer and cook from South-East London deepened her understanding of West African cooking after a trip to visit her extended family in Ghana. There she spent time exploring recipes in her grandmother’s kitchen and at the famous Kaneshi street market, where she met with cooks who shared their own takes on traditional recipes.
Described by The Observer as a “standard bearer for West African food” and picked up by Nigel Slater as one to watch on the topic of immigration food in Britain, Zoe has been making waves in the food scene ever since her first sell-out successful supperclubs in 2011. Having taken her fresh interpretation of classic Ghanaian flavours to popup venues across London and Berlin as well as prominent streetfood festivals around the UK, Zoe is now bringing her West African food for everyone to the West End.
The Sun & 13 Cantons is a popular pub in Soho, renowned for its residencies by acclaimed popup chefs and streetfood traders such as Darjeeling Express, Sambal Shiok and Adam Rawson."
