End of the World lecture & Killer Cocktails with Crystal Head Vodka near Holborn Circus

Fancy some brainy stimulation with your cocktails?  On 5th December Crystal Head Vodka are hosting a very unusual lecture about the Mayan prophesy of the end of the world.  Crystal Head Vodka is the brainchild of Dan Aykroyd, who will introduce it via film (he won't be there sadly - I did ask...) and afterwards there's a chance to try some cocktails.  It's free, but you need to RSVP to get a space - details below.

"Crystal Head Vodka Invites You To An Evening Of Killer Cocktails & Discussion Around What Just Might Be The End Of The World
Hidden beneath St Andrews Church in Holborn lies a locked 13th century crypt, which for one night only on Wednesday 5th December will creak open to play host to Crystal Head Vodka’s unique ‘End of the World’ Lecture.
Inspired by the world of the supernatural and the archeological mystery of the 13 crystal heads, Crystal Head Vodka is the brainchild of iconic actor Dan Aykroyd. With just over a month to go until the world’s predicted end according to the Mayan Calendar - 21st December to be precise – Crystal Head Vodka has taken upon itself to facilitate an intriguing debate around our (possible) impending doom.
Introduced by iconic Ghostbusters and Blues Brothers star Dan Aykroyd himself, via the unearthly medium of film, philosopher Dr. Stephen Law and Professor Elizabeth Graham, expert in Mesoamerican archeology, will take to the stand to provide insight into the 2012 prophecy debate, and explore its history and, more importantly, its reality.
Should the 21stDecember really mark the end of the world as we know it, Crystal Head’s mixologists will be on hand to ease your woes with a series of specially-created cocktails and signature serves. This may be one of your last chances to understand the prophecy and sample one of the finest luxury vodka’s on the market.
Time is ticking. Spaces are extremely limited for this event so please RSVP speedily to:
crystalheadvodka@wcommunications.co.uk"

When - December 5th 2012, 7pm - 10pm

Where - St.Andrews Crypt Holborn, 7 St Andrews Street, London, EC4A 3AB

Tickets - Free, but places are limited and you need to RSVP to crystalheadvodka@wcommunications.co.uk

Sager and Wilde's Wine Thursdays in Shoreditch

Sager and Wilde (Michael and Charlotte) are hosting wine nights in a former bank vault in Shoreditch on Thursday nights until Christmas.  Expect very nice wines, cheese, meat and bread.  Lovely!

Update - August 2013 - They've now announced a permanent bar.  Well done!

"We’re doing it again. We're removing premium wines from their restaurant context and outrageous mark-ups, by rocking them out by the glass under £10.
84-86 Great Eastern St is currently operating as Bird & Ballard coffee, but was formerly The Foundry; an iconic bar and venue for the last 20 years. Its basement was used to accomodate art, music, live radio broadcasts and poetry events. Celebrated artists from Banksy to Gavin Turk have enhanced its walls. One of Banksy’s artworks, a six metre high painting of a rat with a knife and fork, has been removed for safe keeping. Originally a bank, the venue still boasts original architectural features including giant vaults, safes and marble flooring.
As well as an extensive by the glass selection including solid house wines from £4, there will be cheese from Androuet Spitalfields, meat from Luca at Picco Salumi, Freddie from F.A.T. homemade pickles, e5 bakehouse ‘Hackney Wild’ loaf, and a supreme Sager & Wilde sandwich. And let's not forget the sterling presence of beard from Mike.
All wine (and beard) lovers welcome."

When - Thursdays until Christmas, 6pm m- 11pm

Where - 84-86 Great Eastern Street, EC2A 3JL (The corner of Gt Eastern St and Old Street)

Edible Cinema presents When Harry Met Sally in Notting Hill

Edible Cinema, film experience where you get packages of food to eat at key moments during classic movies, has announced it's Christmas treat - two showings of When Harry Met Sally at the refurbished Electric Cinema in Notting Hill.  As you can see in the picture above you can have your drinks while you watch, along with your parcels of food for the different moments in the film.  We previously featured their Halloween showing of Beetlejuice - see details here

"This Christmas, Edible Cinema will return to the newly refurbished Electric Cinema in  Notting Hill for two fun and festive screenings of When Harry Met Sally on Sunday 16th December. This classic American romantic comedy starring Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan is one of the feel-good films of the last century and the festive scenes throughout the film  are sure to  encourage the Christmas spirit amongst the audience.
Edible Cinema  is a  collaboration between Soho House, renowned experience organiser Polly Betton, experimental food designer Andrew Stellitano and Bombay Sapphire mixologist Sam Carter.
Edible Cinema is a unique way to experience a film: through aroma, texture and taste. Each guest is supplied with a tray of numbered mystery boxes containing a bite-sized tasting menu tailored to specific moments in the film. A number corresponding to a parcel is displayed just before the crucial moment, signalling guests to get stuck in and enjoy the edible treat. On arrival, guests will also be served a  Bombay  Big Apple cocktail created by Bombay Sapphire.  This delightful festive tipple is BIG on seasonal apple flavours inspired by the New York 'Big Apple' film location of 'When Harry Met Sally', incorporating Bombay Sapphire, apple schnapps, cloudy apple juice, apple bitters and topped up with cider. The cinnamon dust sprinkled over the cocktail gives an air of Christmas and also links to one of the 10 exotic botanicals found deep within Bombay Sapphire - Cassia Bark from IndoChina.
When Harry Met Sally offers some great moments to be translated into food. Hair spray, lip gloss and Sally’s constant culinary demands for items ‘on the side’ will all be highlighted through the packages.
The Electric Cinema will re-open to members and the public in early December offering new and luxurious seating, including horizontal ‘beds’ at the front of the auditorium. Christmas Events at Wood Street Market in Walthamstow

Wood Street Indoor Market is holding some special Christmas events.  Lots to do, including a Grotto, and carols with mulled wine.

"Wood Street Indoor Market in East London is a unique historical market, and is only a 10 minute walk from Walthamstow Village in E17 or a 2 minute walk from Wood Street overground Station.
This is the place to find cheap second hand furniture, antiques, vintage clothing, and an amazing collection of retro & vintage music, vinyl and shellacs. There is also picture framing, cake decoration and various other Arts and Craft shops, even a shop called "Mothers Ruin" selling artisan liqueurs, that take a year of steeping in gin or vodka...In all there are about 50 units to walk around, and a great little café that does a good old fashioned fry up!
The market has recently begun to find interest from artists and makers who are seeing the potential in the niche retail spaces and in the community of collectors and antique dealers. The quirky indoor markets were originally built as a cinema, but now they have a reputation among shoppers and antique and record collectors as one of London’s secret gems!

Upstairs Downstairs Christmas Dining Experience in The City

Upstairs Downstairs is a regular event at The Dispensary Pub & Private Dining Room near Aldgate.  Held on the same night, upstairs starts with a champagne reception, while downstairs is more down to earth.  I went last month, and it was fantastic - full review to follow.  Upstairs you get a full 5 course feast served by a butler who worked at Buckingham Palace for ten years.  The food was incredible too - and this time you're getting a traditional five course Christmas dinner, with goose (Upstairs) while those downstairs will get a pie and a pint.  It'll be a very memorable night!

" One of London’s most charming pub restaurants, in the heart of London’s East End, is offering a Christmas dining experience with a big difference.
Inspired by the hit TV series and in pub’s own cosy bar and grand upstairs dining room, THE DISPENSARY is putting on a series of Upstairs & Downstairs dining events.
The Christmas special; on Wednesday 5th December are the brainchild of The Dispensary’s owner David Cambridge, who for many years was the personal chef to Sir Evelyn de Rothschild, and his friend and colleague Philip Joss, senior footman at Buckingham Palace before joining David as Butler to the Rothschild family.
Says David Cambridge: “The Dispensary is a beautiful building that has always captivated my imagination; I wanted to recreate a unique dining experience based on fine dining of the 1920’s, together with Philip we have worked to bring this magical experience to modern society”.
For those who are dining Upstairs in the grand private room the evening will start with a champagne reception, followed by a five-course dinner including matching wines which will be served by uniformed butlers.
Those dining Downstairs in the pub’s cosy bar will be served a pint of traditional ale, accompanied by a pie created by David from cuts of meat which will be available on the day."
