Embers has taken over the kitchen at the Renegade Urban Winery in Lockwood Way, E17, serving in their mezzanine restaurant Weds-Sat until the end of October 2023. Embers comprises chef Ernesto Gabriel and his friend Graham Lewis, who set it up earlier this year, first with a supper club, then a residency in South London, and now here.
The food is very much what Ernesto wants to cook; great ingredients and big flavours, often cooked over fire or coals (hence the name). When I visited I tried their crumpet (topped with a delicious pile of mushrooms), plus a main course of their bavette steak (from Jones the Butcher), with coal roast potatoes (with miso), and marinaded tomatoes. Then I allowed myself to be talked into a donut with white chocolate sauce and toffee apple.
The quality is amazing; Renegade have kept up their impressive record of finding chefs to cook great food in their space. The steak in particular was perfect. I do not have steak often, but I'm still thinking about this one.
Embers are serving on Wednesdays to Saturdays - Wednesday to Friday evenings, and all day on Saturday. The menu will change regularly, but on the basis of yesterday's lunch I would look forward to eating anything from Ernesto's kitchen.
