Dead Man's Hand - An Immersive Adventure Game around Farringdon from A Door in A Wall

Dead Man's Hand is an adventure game crossed with a piece of immersive theatre that plays out over 3 hours in Farringdon on Saturday afternoons.  Created by the highly respected A Door In The Wall, you and your team of 3-6 need to solve a murder by interviewing witnesses and looking for clues in the streets around The Castle pub in Farringdon.  Collect evidence and decide who you think is guilty, then wait to see if you are right.  Sounds like lots of fun; am doing this with some friends in a couple of weeks.

"Jack Spade thought he had been dealt the right cards, but reckless gambling seems to have cost him his life. All those who sat around the poker table that night have something to hide, but can your party work out which card sharp was responsible for his murder? If you’re ready to go all-in, then the nearby streets hold the clues and characters, but you’ll need all your cunning, and maybe a favour or two from Lady Luck, to catch the killer.
After a string of sell-out shows and rave reviews in 2018, A Door In A Wall are returning to the alleys and alehouses of Farringdon, giving a new cadre of ace detectives the chance to try their hands at this classic case.
The Castle Farringdon will play host to illicit gambling den The Underhand Club, the starting point for a high-stakes tale of double-dealing poker players and bets gone bad. Players must work in teams to collect clues, meet characters and gather evidence in the great outdoors to get what they need to solve the case and save the club.
The game will run on Saturday afternoons throughout the summer of 2019. Dead Man’s Hand is an experience designed for teams and a group size of 3-6 is suggested. See below for more FAQs.

Penguin Classics' Happy Reading Pop-up Book Shop in Shoreditch

Penguin Classics is opening a pop-up shop & event space called Happy Reading at 133 Bethnal Green Road, Shoreditch, from Monday 25th - Sunday 31st March 2019.   It will sell and display all 1,237 books in the Penguin Classics range, and also host lots of events in the store, including a book club, and a candle-making workshop for Mother's Day on Sunday 31st.

"On 25 March 2019, Penguin Classics is launching Happy Reading, its first ever pop-up bookshop in Shoreditch to celebrate reading for pleasure and the special books that impact our lives.
Showcasing the range and diversity of world literature, the space will display a single copy of each of the 1,257 books in the world-renowned Penguin Classics list. Happy Reading is both a shop and a cultural space for readers to explore, discuss and challenge the literary canon.
During the evenings, the space will host a range of events and workshops. Confirmed events include a Mother’s Day candle making workshop with Literati & Light, a panel discussion on happiness in partnership with Refinery29 and an event focussing on women in the canon with Penguin Live.

'The Viewing' Immersive Adventure Game at Ninth Life in Catford

The Viewing is a pop-up theatre show and immersive adventure game within nine rooms of the new Ninth Life pub in Catford (formerly The Goose).  Created by Buck Buck Games, it starts when some 'Estate Agents' take you for a viewing of a flat above the pub, and then strange things start to happen...  It takes place on Friday and Saturday nights in March, costs £25, and lasts an hour, with 'performances' starting every half hour from 7pm to 9pm.  Sounds brilliant!

This March, Catford’s Ninth Life pub will open the doors to its brand new 9 room immersive adventure space with its first ever production: ‘The Viewing,’ an escape room inspired interactive theatre and gaming experience.   
Adventurers will be greeted by ‘Estate Agents’ to view a flat above the pub - but as the viewing unfolds, the story will take an unexpected and otherworldly turn.
Inspired by local rumours that the building sits on mysterious ley lines – which are said to be portals to other worlds, times and realities – ‘The Viewing’ leads players through a matrix of rooms where they will encounter different characters, challenges and tasks. 
Slip back in time to a vintage gin palace, escape the evil machinations of a giant cat, listen to the whisperings of the forest men: anything is possible once the portal is open – even getting on the London property ladder!
‘The Viewing’ was conceived by Buck Buck Games, the mad minds behind The Hunt for the Smoking Caterpillar, and Ninth Life Creative Director Dr Claire MacNeill. 
The adventure takes place on the upper floors of new pub Ninth Life. Singer Hollie Haines' Pop-up for her Album Launch in Old Street Station

Folk singer Hollie Haines is launching her new album The Letters To My Last Love as a pop-up at Old Street Underground - in the tunnels under the roundabout that lead to the tube station - for six days from Monday 4th - Saturday 9th February 2019.  Hollie will be there herself for the whole time, with musician and artist friends, so pop in to enjoy a chat or listen to some music. 

Musicians have used pop-ups before - for example Enter Shakiri opened a pop-up shop in Camden to promote an album three years ago - but this is far more extensive.  Well done Hollie!

The John Lewis Winter Rooftop 2018 - with MYPIE, Sipsmith and Ice Skating

The Candy Crush Cafe Two-Day Pop-up in Soho

Candy Crush is opening a pop-up boardgame cafe at 19 Greek Street, Soho on Friday 16th and Saturday 17th June 2017, to help launch their new Candy Crush Boardgame.  Set out over 4 floors there will be cakes, cocktails and more, plus los of places to play the games, which include Top Trumps.  It's open to over 18s only, and is free to get into.

"A new adults-only, pop-up board game café featuring super-sized games is coming to London’s Soho this month. Inspired by the sweet and delicious world of mobile hit game Candy Crush, the café celebrates the current range of Candy Crush-themed board games and is the latest in a wave of venues offering grown-ups the chance to indulge in an old-school pastime.
The Candy Crush board game café will be spread out across four storeys taking commuters’ favourite mobile game to a whole new level.
Adults will enter a world of pure temptation at the Cupcake Carnival on level one – a tasty cafe serving the best Candy Crush themed cocktails, wines, beers and soft drinks. Sweet treats will be provided by London bakery, Mary Lou’s Bakehouse – think Rainbow cake and cupcakes packed with lollipops, striped candy and popping treats.

Pop Up Screens Christmas Films in Hackney Downs

Everyone loves a bit of pop-up cinema!  This Christmas Pop-up Screens are taking over The Showroom at Hackney Downs Studios, Amhurst Terrace, for a Christmas-themed run, including Elf (playing 6 times), Home Alone (4) and Love Actually (3) and several more.  Full listings and booking is here

"Prepare yourself for a winter of wonder and cinematic delight as London’s authentically original pop up cinema, Pop Up Screens, returns with a magical programme of classic Christmas movies to delight audiences both younger and older with The Cinema in the Snow.  This year Pop Up Screens will be creating their own unique winter wonderland at the Hackney Showroom, East London, where the audience will enter the cinema through a wardrobe and be able to snuggle up in their very own white Christmas.

The Winter Film Club in Peckham for 2016

In December 2016 The Rooftop Film Club becomes the Winter Film Club, taking over Peckham's Electric Theatre at 133 Rye Lane (where the Bussey Building is), for a seasonal selection of films including Elf, Die Hard, Home Alone, plus more modern ones like Finding Dory, and the Louis Theroux one about Scientology.  Tix are just £13, and the full programme is here

"The film-loving folk behind London’s Rooftop Film Club are set to bring the magic of the silver screen back to one of London’s earliest cinemas with the launch of Winter Film Club. For the month of December, Winter Film Club will take residency in Peckham’s cherished Electric Theatre to screen an eclectic mix of classics, new releases and Christmas showstoppers.
Staying close to their Peckham roots, the Winter Film Club will set up home in the stunning Edwardian cinema - First open to the marvelling public in September 1908, it was one of the first of the pioneering and influential Electric Theatres across London. After winning last year’s battle against turning the space into luxury flats, Winter Film Club is celebrating the theatre’s rich heritage by returning the space to its original purpose. With beautiful decaying walls, exposed original features and a 16’ x 9’ screen, Winter Film Club will stick to the cinema’s original ethos – etched on the old theatre’s door – ‘To Elevate, Instruct and Amuse’.
Winter Film Club will boast a varied programme to please Elves and Scrooges’ alike, featuring Louis Theroux’s My Scientology Movie, British fan-favourite Love Actually, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Finding Dory, Casablanca and Absolutely Fabulous. The plush curtain will call with Christmas classics like It’s A Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street, Elf, Home Alone and Die Hard.
Home to a licensed bar serving festive liquid refreshments and concessions to grab a snack or some freshly cracked popcorn to share. Settle in to a deckchair, slip the head phones on, step back into time and watch a festive favourite amongst one of London’s unique settings."

The 'Whitechapel 1888' Immersive Theatre Event in E1

'Whitechapel: Suspects, Lunatics and a Leather Apron' is an immersive theatrical event from Apolcalypse Events set in 1888, at the time of Jack The Ripper.  Tickets are £26, and this gets you into their venue which they have transformed into an historical setting.  There you will be given a role, and will take part in a re-enactment.  It all sounds lots of fun, and will take place over ten nights starting Friday 28th October 2016, and continuing until Saturday 19th November, mostly on Fridays and Saturdays.  It's not a food event, but it'll excite your senses in lots of other ways...

Yelp!'s 'Slides and Scoops' Ice Cream Festival for Grown-ups in N7

Yelp! the local 'what's on' app is organising an Ice Cream Festival for grown-ups at the wonderfully named Lumpy Hill Advanture Playground in N7 on Saturday 16th July 2016.  It's free to attend, but you must RSVP in advance and be a Yelp user - have an account - and check in the with Yelp when you get there.  It's open 1pm - 6pm, and sadly / happily no kids are allowed (only big kids, over 18).

Rooftop Film Club's 2016 Summer Screenings in Peckham, Shoreditch, Stratford and Kensington

The Rooftop Film Club has announced its Summer 2016 programme of open air screenings, back on the rooftops that gave it its name.  As in 2015, there are four venues for the summer, The Queen of Hoxton in Shoreditch, The Bussey Building in Peckham, Roof East in Stratford, and Kensington Roof Gardens, wth food from Forza Win and RockaDollar Dogs, plus coffee from sponsors Nespresso.  Films are shown on a big screen, and the audience is given wireless headphones for the sound.  It runs until September, and more films will be added - Note that films sell out fast!

Birdies' Rooftop Crazy Golf Course in Stratford

Birdies Crazy Golf first appeared last year at The Vaults under Waterloo; now they're back for summer 2016 with a rooftop course on the top of a multistory carpark in Stratford, E15.  Expect crazy holes (one of which has a 5ft drop), great views, and streetfood from people like RockaDollar Dogs, plus cocktails and other drinks.  It's open six days a week - closed Mondays - and it's only £9 for a ticket to play.

"London’s sell-out subterranean golf experience, Birdies – visited by more than 15,000 budding putter-punks in November and December last year – will make a triumphant return to the lofty greens of Roof East, high above the streets of Stratford this Summer. 
Birdies Rooftop Crazy Golf, from the kings of pop-up cinema Rooftop Film Club, promises a Summer season of crazy golf with altitude, delectable cocktails from mixology masters Spirited Mixers, a new lip-smacking menu of RockaDollar Dogs from Hawksmoor Knightsbridge Head Chef Richard Sandiford and a swinging schedule of resident DJs, all whilst enjoying London’s sun-drenched skyline. Open from 2pm at weekends for families and early birdies all the way to 10pm for golfing night owls.
A challenge for even the most confident of swingers, the bespoke nine-hole course, serves up loops, half-pipes, hidden putt-off prizes and an elevated 5ft drop onto the sixth hole."

Feed Me Films' Screening of 'Casino' in a Casino in Leicester Square

Feed Me Films, who put on iconic films in great and apt locations, with themed food, are back for February with Scorsese's Casino being screened at The Hippodrome casino in Leicester Square.  Screenings take place on Saturday 13th & Saturday 27th February, from 2.30pm - 7pm, and you get the choice of two ticket options - The Mafiaoza for the high rollers at £48, with a 3 course meal and (some) drinks included, and The Hustler at £16, with no frills, (but you can get drinks at the bar).  Don't miss it!

The Tottenham Ploughman Winter Fest 2015

The Great New Zealand Wine Garage Sale 2015 in Brixton

On Sunday 13th December The New Zealnd Cellar is holding its annual garage sale event at Pop Brixton, SW9.  Go along to try and buy lots of NZ wines at very compeitive prices, plus there will be food from Made of Dough, and coffee from Caravan.  My tip would be 'go early'; as it gets busy and the wines sell quckly...

Le Cordon Bleu's Forgotten Foods Market at The Rosewood in Holborn

For one day only - Sunday 13th December - The Rosewood in Holborn plays host to The Forgotten Food Market with Le Cordon Bleu London, between 10am and 3.30pm, reviving lots of forgotten foods, inclding a special Fogotten Foods brunch menu at the Holborn Dining Rooms.  Please go along to support the British producers and the Slow Food movement!

"On the 13th December 2015, Le Cordon Bleu London will be hosting an exclusive pop up at the Rosewood London Slow Food Market.
We will be bringing some of the Forgotten Foods to life again during a very special one weekend only pop up which will include: tastings, live demonstrations from their master chefs and a specially designed Forgotten Foods menu for the brunch at the iconic Rosewood to mark the occasion.
The traditional and award winning market which takes place every Sunday in the hotel’s Grand Inner Courtyard between 10am and 3:30pm is endorsed by Slow Food UK and is the only dedicated slow food and living market in London, with over 30 different producers that have all been carefully selected for their exceptional quality of Good, Clean and Fair.

Feed Me Films' 3D Screening of The Art of Flight at the Genesis Cinema in Whitechapel

Feed Me Films, the immersive film company, is putting on a winter treat - the movie The Art of Flight screened in 3d, complete with lots of snowboarding action - at The Genesis Cinema in Mile End Road, between Whitechapel & Stepney Green stations.  Taking place on Friday 11th December from 6.30pm, tickets range from £12.50 to £33.50 depending on extras (hot dogs from Big Apple, and more).  Should be an epic night!

The Underground Film Club's Winter 2015 Screenings in Waterloo

On Thursday 12th November the Underground Film Club returns to the Vaults underneath Waterloo for a mix of new and much loved movies, including Jurassic World, Mad Max: Fury Road, and special events Pixar day (Sunday 22nd November) and a screening of Benedict Cumberbatch's Hamlet.  It runs Tuesday to Sunday - make sure you catch at least one film.

"As the nights draw in pop-up cinema experts Rooftop Film Club have announced their unique movie experience is heading underground for the winter season, once again taking residence in the vast Vaults of Waterloo station.
Guests are set to enjoy a subterranean movie experience like no other as Underground Film Club will screen an eclectic mix of classic, cult and recent film releases amid the shadowy caverns of one of the capital’s busiest stations. This season’s sub-station show reel includes 'Pulp Fiction', 'The Big Lebowski', 'The Grand Budapest Hotel', and ‘Casablanca’ as well as brand new summer blockbusters ‘Jurassic World’ and ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’.
Secreted under the railway arches, The Vaults is the historical underworld turned contemporary arts space, offering an atmospheric labyrinth of Victorian brickwork chambers to lose yourself in for the ultimate escapist film event.

Lucy Sparrow's Madame Roxy's Erotic Emporium Felt Sex Shop In Soho

Lucy Sparrow, the artist behind last year's amazing felt Corner Shop in Bethnal Green is back for a ten day exhibition in Soho, this time recreating a sex shop with over 5000 items in felt, including condoms, vibrators, ball gags, porn mags and more.  Open from Tuesday 7th - Saturday 17th October, it at 2 Green Court, Soho, one of the alleyways between Berwick Street market and Brewery street. As with the Corner Shop, all items will then be on sale at her site here

"While London’s Soho undergoes sterilisation with old strip clubs and seedy sex shops being swept away in favour of trendy wine bars and hipster coffee shops, so Britain’s laws on pornography are also being cleansed, with the prohibition of the depiction of practices like face-sitting, female ejaculation and even spanking. Now British artist Lucy Sparrow is hitting back at the growing influence of the neo-Puritans and prudery with her latest show: a Soho sex shop created entirely from felt.

In a stinging comment of the hypocrisy of third-wave feminism, Sparrow seeks to challenge the rights of sex workers, fetishists and consumers of porn with the creation of a complete sex shop which, were the exhibits not made from felt, would be illegal. Sparrow’s latest works seeks to test the boundaries of legality. Does a porn magazine created from felt and hand-stitched break Britain’s new porn laws?
As a former worker in the adult industry, where Sparrow earned money to launch her art career through lap dancing, she revisits her past to make a comment on the increasingly prudish attitude towards sex workers and adult entertainment. Her concerns are that increasing restriction drives repression and promotes a Victorian attitude towards what is a natural bodily function.
To illustrate her points, Lucy Sparrow has taken an entire shop in Soho from October 7th to 17th where the public can visit free of charge to view more than 5000 sex products ranging from condoms and lubricants, all the way to S&M bondage gear and Fuzzy-Felt peep shows.
Sparrow has spent the past six months stitching felt porn mags, DVD covers and various sex aids. The show gives the opportunity for those who know little of the sex retail industry to satisfy their curiosity without the need for floor-length trench coats and dark glasses.
Madame Roxy’s Erotic Emporium is in stark contrast to Lucy Sparrow’s family friendly Cornershop installation which opened in 2014 in Bethnal Green. The Cornershop showed Sparrow’s playful and ingenious side and delighted thousands of visitors and was greeted with great acclaim by London’s art scene. Madame Roxy’s may not be suitable for small children but it’s sure to be as thought-provoking and to create as much a buzz as The Cornershop did."

The National Trust's Westway Beach under the Westway Flyover in W10

For one weekend - Fri 26th - Sun 28th June 2015 - Acklam Village (under the Westway flyover where it meets the Portobello Road) will turn into a beach, with all the fun of the seaside, inc sandcastles, beach huts, deckchairs, and a beach market.

"This year the National Trust celebrates 50 years since the launch of the Neptune Coastline Campaign.  Thanks to the support of many thousands of people, Neptune has helped to fund the acquisition of 574 miles of coastline.  The National Trust now cares for 775 miles of the coastline of England, Wales and Northern Ireland – including the White Cliffs of Dover and the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland.  Millions of people visit these special places every year.
Along the UK’s coastline are fun-filled events, wildlife and cultural heritage.  Now you can experience the beach right here in London and enjoy the National Trust’s coastal celebrations amidst the concrete jungle of our capital.
Under the imposing landmarks of the Westway flyover, Trellick Tower and alongside the Portobello Road, the Westway Beach, at Acklam Village will become a visual spectacle with all the fun of the seaside.  Think sunbathing, sandcastles, wind breakers, beach huts, deckchairs, carousels, dunes, cut-out scene photo ops, bunting, windmills, end-of-the pier attractions and cabaret."
