Ralph Steadman's 'Breaking Bad Character Portraits' Exhibition in Shoreditch

On Friday 13th - Sunday 15th February there will be a special exhibition of Ralph Steadman portraits of the main characters in Breaking Bad, due to be featured on a new set of Blu-rays.  It's on for 3 days only in Leonard Street, EC2 - get to see these very special takes on the Breaking Bad world, plus other character portraits from new British artists.
The exhibition is to promote the new Breaking Bad steelbooks Blu-rays released on:
Seasons 1 and 2 Available February 2, 2015
Seasons 3 & 4 Available March 2, 2015
Seasons 5 & Final Season Available April 6, 2015

"Join us at 71a to celebrate the release of the Breaking Bad Limited Edition Blu-ray Steelbooks, featuring exclusive hand-crafted character illustrations by legendary British cartoonist Ralph Steadman. Also displayed will be a selection of original artwork inspired by Breaking Bad from UK rising talent personally chosen by Ralph Steadman.
Steadman on Each Character:
WALTER WHITE: "The characters are specific, primarily Water White appeared to be an intensely honourable family man who during the course of the story, became indelibly corrupted." 
JESSE PINKMAN: "I thought Jesse was going to turn out to be a waster and in fact, he developed instead into an incredibly compassionate human being." 
HANK SCHRADER: "The warmth of friendship between Hank and Walt was both touching and tragic, and I wanted to take both Hank and Walt and get them to realise each others' points of view. I constantly wanted to shake them and tell them 'pull yourselves together and work this thing out.'"
SKYLER WHITE & MARIE SCHRADER: "As for the wives, sisters Skyler and Marie, there was something about them that at first seemed so foolishly unaware of what was happening, that it couldn't possibly happen that way."
THE WHITE FAMILY: "Regarding baby Holly, Skyler and Walt seemed rather too old to be starting a new family, although early on in the series, there was obviously strong affection between both of them. A dimension of the family was the beautiful adoring son, Walt Jr., who at first simply would not believe there was anything wrong with his beloved dad, and then discovered that all that glitters is not gold."

Loughran Gallery's Three Week Pop-up in Chelsea

Loughran Gallery have gone West for their latest pop-up, a three week stint in Chelsea, near to Sloane Square (& the Saatchi Gallery), in a previously empty space.  Lots of art to see and buy, including works by Damien Hirst (below), Blek le Rat, Dave White, and Marc Quinn.

"Loughran Gallery is set to launch SPRUNG, a brand new exhibition which sees the gallery move South West into the Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. This springtime exhibition will feature artists such as Dave White, Jessica Zoob, Marc Quinn and Takashi Murakami.
Highlights of the exhibition will include original works, including an exclusive Great White oil painting from Dave White’s upcoming LA show, Apex, as well as Limited Edition works by Marc Quinn, Takashi Murakami, Hirst and ‘Godfather of Street Art’ Blek le Rat."

'A Game of Imagination' exhibition in Knightsbridge

Russian artist Veronika Olkhova is holding her first British solo exhibition at Baku in Knightsbridge from 11th - 19th April.  The exhibition will highlight her paintings and silks.

"A Game of Imagination the first UK solo exhibition of the work of Russian born British based creative.
The show is an encounter with the artist’s interest for symbols, colors and imagination - their significance versus their signifier as well as their visual impact and the endless possibilities that such a game opens.
Veronika Olkhova grew up in a lifelong interest in the mythology and languages. She read ancient text, imagining being a part of that mysterious world. As she learned more, her creative mind and soul tried to depict her ideas on canvas.
The fusion of myths, music and colours intrigued the young spirit and as Veronika grew up, it was clear these ideas could only be expressed through art. In the artist’s world shapes, colors, words, symbols and feelings melt harmoniously to create timeless expression of creativity and beauty.
In the exquisite setting of Baku Knightsbridge a series of paintings, silks and beyond by the Russian creative will invite you to take part in a journey for the senses into the mystical world of symbols, history of languages, emotions, music and feelings.
The everlasting allure of the works gently unfold to the viewer, presenting each time details the eye couldn’t capture previously – stillness in movement that narrates an ongoing tale.

The Loughran Gallery's 4 Day Contemporary & Urban Art Exhibition in Shoreditch

This April The Loughran Gallery will open for 4 days only in Redchurch Street, with work from artists like Damien Hirst, Dave White (above) and Harland Miller.  It's only open for 4 days, but the Thursday night will be part of First Thursday, so the gallery will be open until late that evening.

"The Loughran Gallery will open its doors on April 4th until April 7th exhibiting contemporary and urban artwork from around the world. The concept of the pop up as with all Loughran Gallery instillations, is to offer the public the chance to view and purchase art in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
Attracting a cross section of artwork including the works Proctolin and Exaudi, Domine by Turner Prize winner Damien Hirst, I Am The One I’ve Been Waiting For and Five Ring Circus – It’s All Fun And Games from Harland Miller, Monks and Elephant I from Lara Carew-Jones’s recent series inspired by a trip to Thailand and The Eye of History and Separation of Body and Soul created by Marc Quinn the pop up has an exciting, no nonsense approach to art.
Additionally, the exhibiton will be bringing back celebrated contemporary artist Dave White’s Americana series. Like much of White’s work, Americana was inspired by early childhood memories and perceptions, but people can now expect to see the emergence of a new chapter in White’s artistic journey showcased at the Loughran Gallery pop up. Amongst White’s new collection there will be an exclusive limited edition high quality silk screen print available. 
Founder and creator of the Loughran Gallery Juliette Loughran said “It is great to make art available to everyone, we want to create a space where people can come to enjoy and appreciate the work in an intriguing, fun and exciting environment. We have such a diverse mix of artists showing at the space we hope there is something to cater for all tastes”.
The Loughran Gallery will also be participating in First Thursday where galleries in East London stay open until 9pm on the first Thursday of each month (4th April 2013). First Thursday gives people more chance to view the amazing work on offer at the pop up."

A Jimi Hendrix Pop-up Shop & Exhibition in Soho

Possibly inspired by last year's Bob Dylan pop-up shop, a Jimi Hendrix pop-up shop & exhibition is opening in Ganton Street, off Carnaby Street, in April.  It'll sell some Hendrix merchandise and records, and house an exhibition of Gered Mankowitz' photos.  Mankowitz himself will be in the store to do a signing and a talk on April 6th

"The store, at 8 Ganton Street in Soho, will celebrate the recent release of 'People, Hell & Angels', which consists of tracks from Hendrix recording sessions that took place between early 1968 and late 1969. 
It will host a Gered Mankowitz photography exhibit as well as selling limited edition merchandise, records and feature Fender Plug & Play demo stations.
Open from April 1-12, the shop will be launched by Jimi's sister Janie L Hendrix, who will be signing copies of Jimi Hendrix: The Ultimate Lyric Book on the opening evening. 
Gered Mankowitz will then appear at the shop on April 6 to talk about working with Hendrix and he will also be signing copies of his prints."

Lucie Conoley's Two Week Art Show in Brixton Village

Lucie Conoley is hosting a solo art show in Brixton for two weeks, detailing her own maps of Brixton.

"Lucie Conoley is to open her two-week show at Studio 73 in Brixton Village.  
Showcasing a series of artworks and prints of her illustrated maps series in her home ground of Brixton.
Featuring bespoke maps that detail the intricacies and memories of an area, for short, ‘The MIPs’ (the most important places) In addition to the larger canvas pieces and limited edition prints, merchandise will be available from £5 and poster prints from £15.

Jester Jacques Pop Up Street Art Shop at Boxpark in Shoreditch

Shape Arts Pop-up Gallery in The City

The disabled artists' charity Shape has opened a pop-up gallery in the city, running until 21st December.

"SHAPE has an exciting and unique new Pop Up Gallery space in the heart of the City of London, at 40 Gracechurch Street, EC3V 0BT from now until 21st December.
Delivered in partnership with Photovoice, and Action Space with over 30 artists and 130+ works, Shape in the City has turned five floors of contemporary office space into a showcase of sculpture, prints, paintings, film and video, poetry, performance art and installations.
Shape's unique archive of ephemera from the Disability Arts movement, and Shape's digital Chronology of Disability Art will also be made available for research or general interest by appointment.
This ambitious multimedia space will bring the work of disabled artists to new audiences for a limited period only.
Drop in for a look around during your lunch break, or contact us if you would like to view by appointment and take your time."

This is Women’s Work! Pop-up Art Show in Chelsea

This is Women’s Work! is a new pop-up show at the Chelsea Art Gallery in Sloane Square.  All works are by women, and all are at the affordable end!

"“What unites these artists is that they are affordable.  At The Chelsea Art Gallery we hope to create art buyers out of people who love art but have been put off by prices. We want everyone to be able to own a piece of art that is distinctive and has meaning for them. Here you get a choice - and there's something for everybody."
The art on show includes narratives of street life around Sloane Square by Lucille Cranwell, linocuts of London’s landmarks by Jenny Ing, and drawings of farm animals by Imogen Man.
“When considering the subject matter of women's art, you might think: mother & baby, flowers, home life and the odd seaside trip. In fact, women's art has a frame of reference as wide as the great outdoors. Their unique reaction is visible in their work, which embraces the human experience in virtually every respect,” Barasel said.
The work of all the artists is accessible both in terms of style and price, with prints ranging from £40 unframed to £490 framed and original paintings from £200 on unframed stretchers to £3,000 framed. 
And for those interested in commissioning a portrait of a friend, a family member or even themselves, portrait artist, Stella Tooth, will providing insight into what’s involved, by starting a painting from life of Roger Baresel in the gallery on Saturday, 24th November.  The painting will go on show in the gallery when completed. 
Baresel said, “Women artists have been at the back of the shop too long!  Taking the lid off women’s painting has released a tidal wave of creativity - and revealed some highly collectable artists.”

Atomica Gallery 3 Week Art Pop-up in Shoreditch

Atomica Gallery will be popping up for three weeks in December, before finding a permanent home in 2013.  Lots of new art to see!

"A brand new addition to London’s vibrant art scene is announced today. Atomica are launching with a three-week-long pop-up gallery and shop in Shoreditch from Tuesday 4th December, bringing the best under-exposed contemporary artists, illustrators and lowbrow weirdness from around the world to the UK.
Atomica Gallery is dedicated to showing the best in new contemporary art, including – but not limited to – Pop Surrealism, Lowbrow, Mid-Century, Polynesian Pop, illustration, modern folk, tattoo artistry and Naive Pop. Atomica aims to give these scenes the love and attention they deserve, creating a London venue for global talent while inspiring local neighbours and friends.

The Word Art Collective's Exhibition of Emerging Artists in Hoxton

A new exhibition is opening in the Hoxton Arches on 21st November, fusing art, language, and reflecting European identity.  What this means in practice is lots of emerging artists and designers, with lots of styles including street art, fine art, and typography.

"The Word Art Collective is pleased to announce their exhibition Word Art funded by the European Commission under the British Council’s Youth in Action programme. The exhibition will run from 21 November to 8 December at Hoxton Arches in East London.
Fusing art and language and reflecting on European identity, the exhibition will present cutting-edge works by a group of exceptional emerging artists and designers, most of whom have made new pieces commissioned by the Word Art Collective.
Word Art Collective Director Priya Khanchandani comments: “We’ve brought together a talented group of international artists who have used words and images in unison, to show that both modes of expression have in common the power to convey what is fundamental about us; to tell stories, give voice to new ideas, to prick our imagination and move us.”
Word Art Collective commissioned photographer Kofi Allen and author Courttia Newland to create a collaborative piece for the exhibition entitled ‘Watching the Watchers’.
Newland has written a flash fiction story to accompany the previously unpublished photograph taken by Allen at this year’s Notting Hill Carnival which will be displayed alongside the image.
Graphic novelist and illustrator Nick Hayes will present an illustration that depicts man transforming the natural world into his own fantastical visions using language, sounds and mythological narrative. Hayes incorporates the ancient Pictish alphabet to describe this act as ‘Enchantment’.
‘Hope something happens, Hope nothing happens’ by up-and-coming fine artist and Royal College of Art graduate Wonwoo Lee is a sculptural gate piece inspired by Auguste Rodin’s iconic Gates of Hell, relecting on our expectations and the uncertainties in life.
Street artist Mobstr, known for his guerrilla typography which comments on advertising in public spaces and questions people’s relationship with the built environment, will be working off the street for the first time. 
The artist, whose identity is top secret, will be given late-night access to paint an original work onto one of the gallery’s inside walls that will be revealed at the opening.
The Word Art Collective also launched a pan European digital art competition from which the winning entry, selected from over fifty submissions by a judging panel chaired by Head of Research at the Victoria & Albert Museum Dr Glenn Adamson, will be announced at the Press & VIP Evening with a €300 prize awarded.
Several other events will complement the exhibition, namely a funded workshop with students from a local Hackney school, to be taught by Word Art author Courttia Newland, as well as Thursday lates including the Whitechapel Gallery’s First Thursday on 6 December.
Distinguished curator Dr Glenn Adamson is the mentor to the Word Art Collective, a non-profit initiative established by a group of Londoners under 30 working in art and design. He comments: “As in all outbursts of everyday speech, there is a lot of energy in the show, and a great deal of truth."
