Lagom at The 3 Compasses, Dalston

Lagom is chef Elliot Cunningham, who has been popping up around London for several years, and is now serving burgers, buns and more at 3 Compasses in Dalston, E8, Tuesdays to Sundays.

Elliot is a big fan of fire cooking, and his  burgers and buns are really worth the visit (I came all the way from SW4).  I had the lamb burger, with Greek spices and even a dash of yogurt, which was spectacularly good.  I need to nip back to try some more; he also does a smash burger, a chicken bun, and a fried celeriac bun.

& don't forget to order a portion of the triple-fried potatoes - these are seriously addictive.

When - Tuesdays - Sundays

C & C Ice Cream Co are popping up for the summer at the entrance to Vinegar Yard, the street food court and outdoor space in St Thomas St, SE1, near to London Bridge Station.  C & C serve the New Zealand style Real Fruit Ice Cream, where frozen berries are blended into ice cream in a specially imported Little Jem ice cream maker to create a smooth, fruity soft serve, either in a cone or a cup.

I tried this last week, and it's honestly some of the best ice cream I've ever had!  So smooth, so fruity, and so delicious.  They are currently offering a choice of 3 - Mixed Berry, Cherry, and a weekly special, and open Thursdays to Sundays.

You do not need to go into Vinegar Yard to have one - they are serving from their pink hut at the entrance.

Happy Endings' Pudding Hatch at the Pavilion Cafe in Victoria Park, E9

Now serving - Hot puddings to take away at the Happy Endings Pudding Hatch at the Pavilion Cafe in Victoria Park (by the lake), serving Fridays to Sundays for the winter.

Perfect for the cold weather, Happy Endings originally took over the hatch in the summer with their soft serve ice creams; you can still get an ice cream, but I'd really recommend the puds - both the sticky toffee, and the chocolate fudge, both served with fresh, hot custard πŸ˜‹

Terri Mercieca set up Happy Endings about 10 years ago, and you can now find her puddings and ice cream sandwiches in lots of London's best delis.

Moon Cheese Toasties in Hopewell Square, E14

Moon Cheese - Alex & Evan - cook amazing toasties from their hut in Hopewell Square, E14, just a few minutes walk from Canning Town tube station, and next to The Lockdown Room, a large, modern bar.  They are there every day, usually til about 5pm, and well worth the trip.  Look out for them in new sites later this year too!

No, it's not an egg... this is their pesto & tomato toastie, with a mix of cheddar & mozzarella πŸ˜‹, hence the colouring.

You order from the hut, but then you can take it into the bar to eat, or just sit out in the open.

The toasties are very popular with the locals and the local businesses, including the ballet school!

John Javier x Fin & Flounder's Spring 2021 Streetfood Stall in Broadway Market

Chef John Javier (Noma, Pachamama East) has partnered with Fin & Flounder in Broadway Market, and is cooking at a gazebo outside their seafood shop on Thursdays to Sundays, 11am-5pm, until Sunday 16th May 2021.

The menu is a mix of things from the grill (for example a burger made with prawn & monkfish), as well as cold fresh fish dishes like the fish tartare (in pic above), a mix of salmon and wild sea bass, artfully served in a truffle crisp bag.

I visited recently and loved the creativity and the quality.  Tip - go early - I got there about 2 hours after opening and the lobster rolls had already sold out.

A food hall and bar has just opened in White City Place, W12, with regularly changing street food chefs serving up their best dishes.  Open Mondays to Fridays (with Saturdays coming) from 12 noon, W12 Studios features traders curated by Feast It, each in situ for a couple of months or so.  First up are two absolute crackers - Cue Point, serving gorgeous smoked and BBQ-ed meats and more, and The Piadina Project, fried chicken and flatbread stars best known for their slots at Victoria Park Market.  See you there!

"Open Monday to Saturday and with a capacity of 450, W12 Studios is a space to give emerging creatives an opportunity to be seen – from our kitchen, to our drinks, to our music programme.
Our two revolving kitchens are constantly changing, rotating on a monthly basis. We have partnered with feast-it.com who ensure a constant supply of the best chefs, restaurants, street-food operators and emerging culinary talent that London has to offer.
Cue Point
First on the line-up for the month of February is Cue Point, a multi-sensory barbecue experience founded by previous Head Chef of Smoke Stak, Joshua Moroney.
Cue Point was established on a passion to create more than just amazing BBQ. They wanted to truly create, innovate and inspire the full range of their audience’s senses. They’ve taken British Barbecue to new heights, fusing it with an array of inspirations and experiences.

‘Piadina’ is a thin Italian flatbread, typically prepared in the Romagnola region. It was here that the owner, Jack Padoan, sampled his very first magical Italian flatbread that his grandfather, Gianni, had always spoken to him about at length. Sure enough, the flavours blew him away and he just knew that he needed to bring it back to the UK.
The result? What’s hailed as ‘London’s best fried chicken flatbreads’. Fillings include buttermilk fried chicken, crispy hash browns, pancetta, Italian soft cheeses and pesto mayo to name a few."

Last Days of Shoreditch's Final Month in Old Street

The end of an era - Last Days of Shoreditch has announced that July 2017 will be their last month.  The site has been used as a street food market since 2012 when it was called Red Market - see my post here - but now sadly the developers are moving in, and preparing to build on it.  Please make sure you go in the final month - it's open Thursdays to Saturdays, with street food provided by Smokey Tails, Cheeky Burger and Crust Bro's

"Located in a formerly derelict 30,000 sq ft space on the intersection between Shoreditch and Old Street, Last Days of Shoreditch and Red Gallery have for the last eight years fostered and celebrated a community of creativity and collaboration, spearheading a movement that has made East London the cultural and economic powerhouse it is today. A bastion of honest fun and entertainment in East London, at Last Days Of Shoreditch, revellers are given the chance to escape the rush of urban life with this season's summer instalment, The Enchanted Garden, filled with a tropical beach area, swinging hammock beds, a tree-house, specially commissioned sound installations and more.
Last Days of Shoreditch became a pioneer in the area, with an original idea of mixing street food with art, family-friendly events and night-time culture. Alongside Electric Star Ltd., London’s most forward-thinking food traders and specially curated DJ lineups, Last Days Of Shoreditch has become a destination of sights, tastes and sounds, visited by those from far and wide. The venue's events series have supported cutting-edge music and arts, spanning dance music, experimental and beyond, fostering spaces of inclusivity and collaboration. Last Days of Shoreditch has continually set a regional standard for safety, residential relations, working closely with Hackney Council to provide for the local community.
The extent of neighbouring Red Gallery’s remit and influence is vast. As a gallery, it has created an expanding archive of international subcultural movements (Ourhistory), curated numerous keynote exhibitions, events, screenings, and talks, and has been the host of local community workshops and UK university graduation shows. Its DIY ethos has innovated the ‘gallery’ format into a dynamic, community-driven space, nurturing strong European connections that have extended its reach to an international audience. The building’s exposed faΓ§ade provided a canvas for promoting quality street art (e.g. Banksy, Roa Eine, Thierry Noire), attracting over 1000 visitors daily; and on the rooftops Red Gallery was one of the first to join the Urban Beehive programme.
As a creative hub and business incubator, Red Gallery offered one of the first co-working spaces in the region, ahead of the Google Campus and WeWork; Soundcloud was one of the first tenants to move in.
Set to close on 29th July, Red Gallery and all associated businesses are now looking for a new home to continue operating. Stayed tuned for further news on the closing parties very soon."
