Hush Puppies' Darkroom Photographic Event at The Truman Brewery on Brick Lane

From Friday 23rd to Monday 26th August, Hush Puppies are hosting a photography event at the Old Truman's Brewery.  You can take an interactive workshops hosted by a leading photographer, rent a 35mm film analogue camera and then be shown how to develop their photos in the Dark Room, check out the ever-growing gallery of analogue photography, and browse the pop-up vintage camera store from Films Not Dead.  Booking is required for some aspects - see the Facebook event for more info on that.

"From Friday 23rd August – Monday 26th August, Hush Puppies – the creator of the original casual shoe - will be opening the doors of Truman Brewery and welcoming the creative and curious in for an exploration into traditional photography as part of their new pop-up Dark Room. Taking budding photographers back in time to the days of old school processes and analogue cameras, the vast space just off the vibrant Brick Lane, East London will reveal all.
Digital is left at the door as guests are invited to rent a 35mm film camera, hit the streets of London with their analogue in tow and on return personally process their own favourite image in the Dark Room with experts on hand to help guide people through the process.
Throughout the four days there will also be a line-up of dynamic experts hosting interactive workshops, these include learning how to make your own retro-pinhole camera, taking a tour with street photography experts whowill help you take the perfect picture and then take you back to the Dark Room to develop your masterpiece.  As well as a pop-up classic camera store from photography specialists Films Not Dead.
London based film-maker and photographer Dean Chalkley will be exhibiting a sample of images from 'The Executioners', a new and previously unseen photographic essay that portrays members of an obscure renegade British Car Club. Dean comments: “If you are using film on a shoot there's always an element of surprise, anticipation and excitement. Nowadays so many images are viewed ‘On-screen’, which is all good, but the beauty and physicality of a real photographic print and conventional photographic process is still a very special thing – I’d definitely encourage everyone to experience it.
“And I’m delighted to be displaying this series of images at the Dark Room. I had to think differently on this shoot, relinquish a bit of control, but this slightly different approach has reignited my appreciation of doing things this way. I hope it will produce similar feelings in those getting involved and taking part in the Dark Room”.
Photographer and award-winning fine art printer Debbie Sears will be running the Dark Room, she comments: “There is a current trend for more traditional photography so the Hush Puppies Dark Room could not have come at a better time. We want to encourage digital users toexperience the magical workings of analogue photography - it’s a greatopportunity to learn a new skill. Professionals of the photographic industrywill be on hand to guide those who enter the dark room through each procedure, revealing the traditional methods used to achieve great imagery. For anyone who enjoys taking pictures this is an opportunity not to be missed”.
As part of the Dog Day’s series, the Dark Room opens its doors to celebrate traditional photography and the value of capturing imagery through film – where every snap counts! Hush Puppies encourages people to capture the sights of the city and indeed their own Dogs Days this summer."

Beer Mutiny Beer Tasting for British Craft Beers in Hoxton

Beer Mutiny is a craft beer tasting event happening over 5 days in Mid June.  It's more structured than a beer festival - you get 10 beers to taste from a selection, and this sounds like lots of fun, plus a great intro to lots of great British beers.

"With the aim to actively contest negative perceptions about British beer, a new craft beer tasting festival, called Beer Mutiny, is being launched by The Craft Beer Social Club. The festival takes place from Wednesday 19th June – Sunday 23rd June in Shoreditch, London.
The idea behind Beer Mutiny (which has the motto: Go against the grain; stand up for British Beer) is to rebel against the common misconception that British beer is dull, uninviting and not readily available. The large number of mainstream beer brands, and lack of choice at the average pub, implies that the UK does not have a strong brewing tradition. However, the contrary is true: the number of breweries in the UK is rising (over 1000 at the last count) and they produce over 5,500 different beers on an annual basis.
The Beer Mutiny festival will feature a different beer menu on each day of the event (over the five days there will be over 100 beers on offer) so even the most prolific beer enthusiast will find new British beers to try. Spaces are booked in time slots where attendees will first learn about the science behind how we taste before being able to choose ten beers from a choice of over 30 in that session. Tickets are £15 per person per session or £20 including snacks.
Beer Mutiny will take place approximately every three months, and is part of a roster of events from The Craft Beer Social Club that help raise awareness about the wide selection of permanently brewed British beer. The events endeavour to educate the public on British beer history, the vast range of styles available, how we taste and score beer, as well as the provenance of beer."

'Sunday Papers Live' Daytime Festival near Camden

Sunday Papers Live is a new event that sounds a bit like a cross between being in the audience for a Radio 4 discussion programme, the 'books' tent at a festival, and a great afternoon in the pub, plus outdoor activities including walks.  It's being organised by Secret Garden Party and Wilderness, and if you've ever been to any of their events you'll know to expect something eclectic.
You get talks and analysis of news and culture from people like Jon Ronson, Gavin Turk and Katharine Hamnett, while you eat food from the Forgotten Feast chef, and it's all in Cecil Sharp House, home of the English Folk Dance and Song Society.

"The First Edition takes place on Sunday 26th May (Bank Holiday weekend) at Cecil Sharp House, Regent’s Park Road, London.
Secret Forum’s Sunday Papers Live offers the traditions of Sunday as you’ve never seen them before – roasts, walks, newspapers & close company. See the broadsheets brought to life by commentators, musicians, actors and poets, section by section, performance by performance, covering travel, world news, style, theatre, science, business, art, literature and more. Some will be silly, some serious. Some will make you dance on the tables.
It all takes place, in laid-back Sunday style, in a giant living room packed with Chesterfields, lamps, rugs, slippers and Bloody Marys. Speakers confirmed are as follows:
Mukesh Kapila: the UN insider who first brought Darfur to world attention brings the ultimate,  first-hand account account to the Sunday Papers live audience. Journalist, novelist and all-round legend Jon Ronson will be sharing his latest curious adventures into human eccentricity. Illuminating everyone on Style will be one of the most important names in the fashion industry, Katherine Hamnett (CBE). None ther than Gavin Turk will head up the Art section - and that’s just the tip of the iceberg…

Assemble & Join Community Workshop Project in Waterloo

I met Assemble & Join at this week's Pop-up Meet Up, organised by We Are Pop-up.  Assemble & Join is a temporary community workshop based in Lower Marsh, Waterloo, who work with local businesses, residents and schools to build things for the community.  Theire success has meant that their stay has been extended, so please visit and get involved with this excellent initiative.

"Assemble & Join (A&J), funded by Lambeth Council, opened in October 2012. Situated in a former cafe, A&J offers local residents, school children, shopkeepers, market traders and community groups the chance to collectively imagine, design and build changes to the public realm to better suit their needs, as well as those of the community as a whole. This includes everything from way finding schemes and wildlife habitat to Christmas decorations. A&J are collectively enhancing one of Central London’s most independent areas, building on the sense of increased community spirit engendered by this summer’s Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The workshop centres around a CNC machine; a digital manufacturing tool that can be programmed to accurately cut complex shapes from sheet material (predominantly plywood). The A&J team are working with local people to collaboratively design, manufacture and build their ideas on site in a matter of minutes. All workshops and drop-in sessions at A&J are completely free for local residents, schools and businesses. A&J is bringing digital manufacturing to the high street, meaning anybody and hopefully everybody is able to play a more active role in shaping where they live and work."

When - Now until the end of February, Thursday - Saturday 10am - 6pm

Where - Assemble & Join, 19 Lower Marsh, SE1 7RJ
