Look Like Love's Pop-up Design Shop in Shoreditch

Tom Hutchinson
This May Look Like Love opens a 4 day pop-up shop in Paul Street, Shoreditch, running from 20th - 23rd May, to showcase some new British designers.  As well as the shop, the space will feature workshops, talks, and drop-in sessions - please support them!

"A Hertfordshire-based online graduate art platform is set to translate its online hands-on offering into a physical space with a week-long pop-up shop.
Look Like Love will be showcasing the work of a hand-picked selection of emerging British graduate talent from May 19 to May 23 on Paul Street, East London.
The platform and the show reflect the trend towards limited edition, hand-crafted work with a move away from digitally-aided design and reproduction.
Focusing on the tactile relationship between the designer and consumer, each designer’s collection will have a sense of honesty and craftsmanship, with many pieces either limited edition or one-offs.
Kate Brewer, Look Like Love founder, said: “Designers have been experimenting with hand-made, labour-intensive work, moving away from digital-influenced works in order to provide a better understanding of production, and the best techniques to use instead of relying on computer-aided enhancements.”
“This experimentation has led not only to a better understanding, but also to an emerging preference and appreciation of art produced in this way.”
As well as presenting new collections from 13 up-and-coming British designers, Look Like Love will also be holding a series of in-store workshops, talks from industry speakers, and daily portfolio surgeries for up-coming graduates throughout the week."

'Pints & Popcorn' Craft Film Screening in Streatham

Crafty Pint are holding a special film screening in Streatham on Wednesday 10th April, giving a rare showing of the film Handmade Nation at The Railway pub.  The film is free, but if you reserve a ticket you get entered into a raffle to win some 'crafty' stuff!

"Crafty Pint invite you to join them for an evening of pints and popcorn at their next Crafty Pint evening at Streatham's much loved community pub The Railway.
For one night only, on Wednesday 10 April, Crafty Pint and The Railway are bringing a rare UK screening of Handmade Nation to Streatham.
Handmade Nation documents the new wave of art, craft and design and is the feature film debut of director and artist Faythe Levine. Levine traveled to 15 cities and covered more than 19,000 miles to interview artists, crafters, makers, curators and community members in their studios and homes, giving the public an exclusive and rarely seen look into the lives of these creative individuals and the craft revolution sweeping the nation.
Twenty-four artists from Olympia, Washington to Providence, Rhode Island, and everywhere in between show their work and discuss their lives, including papercut artist Nikki McClure and Sublime Stitching’s Jenny Hart. Levine’s film shows how they have forged a new economy and lifestyle based on creativity, determination, and networking and captures today’s craft world as it emerges as a synthesis of historical technique, punk culture, and the diy ethos, also influenced by traditional handiwork, modern aesthetics, politics, feminism and art.
Thanks to the generous support of The Railway, the film screening will be a free event!
Pre-bookings get a free ticket for our crafty raffle! We have some fabulous prizes, including a copy of State of Craft and a Flaming Nora kit."

Conquer's Wardrobe Pop-up Shop in Sydenham

Photo - Sebastian Stobbs

Conquer's Wardrobe is an ethical fashion and art pop up shop in Sydenham and is part of the SEE3 Shop Revolution, part of the Portas Pilot Project.

"Ethical fashion and art collective Conquer Gear have created a special Pop Up shop featuring a capsule collection of clothing, an exclusive photographic exhibition and curated range of crafts in Sydenham, running until Christmas Eve. Local residents and Londoners are fast spreading the news, with John Malkovich becoming a recent fan and an editorial magazine feature on ethical fashion coming up early next year.
Conquer Gear is a diverse collective of artists and imaginers fronted by Sebastian Stobbs and Tomoya Hiramatsu creating a wide range of innovative and provocative design across different mediums – everything relating to the printed image and written word – fashion, film, photography, art. The company has a strict ethical policy supporting the Environmental Justice Foundation’s Clean Cotton Campaign and all cotton fabrics are clearly labelled with country of origin.
Conquer are hosting regular Friday evening events and activities until 9pm throughout the Pop Up period. On the day of the launch, Saturday December 1st, Sebastian Stobbs was amazed by the response and said: “It was over in a second, everyone coming into the shop had enormous enthusiasm for what was trying to be achieved in their community. We didn't stop chatting with people all day long. It was just so nice to see how many people had come out to join in.”
A lot of preparation went into getting the space ready and also wardrobes to find for the clothes! Sebastian also added: “Everyone I knew that came to visit said ‘I knew it was a shop space, but I didn't think it would look this good, I'm very proud’ with such a small amount of time it was lovely to hear it was all worth the effort."
Before the launch Sebastian said: “Conquer are very excited to be part of the SEE3 Community Project. There is a real buzz around Forest Hill, Sydenham and Kirkdale with all the regeneration that is happening. It is made possible by enthusiastic local residents that have made us feel welcome before we have fully moved in. We are looking forward to being part of the community and adding some fun and creativity to the local high streets.”
Conquer’s Wardrobe was launched through The Shop Revolution, a high impact project that aims to bring empty units back into use and interest to the high street through the introduction of pop up shops. This project is one of three strands of the South London SEE3 Portas Pilot Project."

The Pen & Gravy vs Modernish Pop-up Homeware and Design Shop in Sydenham

Pen and Gravy vs Modernish is a pop-up homeware and design shop in Sydenham and is part of the SEE3 Shop Revolution, part of the Portas Pilot Project.
Update - it's now popping up for a further few weeks, following the success of the pre-Christmas run.

"London Pop Up homeware and design collaboration Pen & Gravy vs Modernish launched on Saturday 1st December to an overwhelming public response, also featuring in the Evening Standard Home & Property magazine’s Top 5 December events. The Pop Up shop is due to run until Christmas Eve, although discussions are underway to possibly extend this. More details to come.
Pen & Gravy is the vision of local self-taught artist Jamie Palmer who brings his original and highly intricate, colourful patterned one-off designs on a range of lampshades and ceramics to Kirkdale in South London.
The other half of the duo is Dan Thomas of Modernish – a UK based company which specialises in a curated range of mid-century British and Scandinavian designs in posters, ceramics, paper goods, books and furniture. Also being displayed is a celebration of iconic South London landmarks on prints from local artists.
Throughout the rest of December, Jamie and Dan will show you how to customise your own lampshade, plate or create your own original Christmas decorations through workshops and will host a series of special evening events.
A special feature of the Pop Up shop is the community art wall which people are invited to contribute their own self portrait doodles to win something special. Anyone who participates will be entered into a random prize draw which will take place on the afternoon of Dec 23rd. There will be mulled wine and mince pies on the day.
On launch day the pair were overwhelmed with the amazing response they received from the public. Speaking about the run up to the launch, Jamie and Dan said: "We were massively excited but quite nervous as didn't feel quite ready to open our doors to the public.” After the launch day they spoke about the things that stood out for them: “Meeting all the lovely people that came into the shop, seeing how much fun everyone was having doodling onto our self-portrait wall.”
Pen & Gravy vs Modernish collaboration was launched through The Shop Revolution, a high impact project that aims to bring empty units back into use and interest to the high street through the introduction of pop up shops. This project is one of three strands of the South London SEE3 Portas Pilot Project."

"You may remember our Hewett Street Block Party, where over 3,000 of you came through for a full day summer spectacular complete with raffles, food trucks, and cameos from ODB, Ghostface and RZA. This Christmas, we're upping our festive food game with a 3 DAY CHRISTMAS MARKET!
From the 14th of December, our 18 Hewett Street space will be turned into a Winter Wonderland of Culinary Delights. Mince-pie Popcorn and edible Christmas cards by Animal Vegetable Mineral, Choco Smoked Walnuts by Lily Vanilli, a super special Christmas Pudding from St. John, mouth watering pickles, sriracha, kimchi and jerky from F.A.T., and bad boi salami hampers from Picco Salumi ...
And that's not the half of it. We've got surprises coming from the likes of Elliot's, London Borough of Jam,Monster Supplies, and Gelupo plus many more.
And of course, no Protein event would be complete without a festive tipple. Expect bottled Christmas booze from The Boilermaker, We Are Noble craft beer & fine wines and kickstarter cuppa wonder Good & ProperTea throughout the three days.
Buying a gift for someone else? Try our donation based gift wrapping service, with paper designs by the ludicrously talented GIF pioneers Reed+Rader, comic artist Joe Kessler (whose show is on at 18HS right now!) and jewellery designer Alice Waese. All  profits go to the wonderful Foodcycle charity, so when you're buying your third bottle of Dante Fried Chicken Sock-It-To-Me Apricot Hot Sauce you'll be helping a good cause too.
The Protein by DunneFrankowski coffee shop is open as usual, serving Irish coffees along with sellling their exclusive handpicked Christmas Coffee Box. We've just got a bunch of new arrivals at The Shelf at Protein as well: Bompas & Parr's latest book FEASTING,  Dante Fried Chicken’s Ride or Fry, and the latest issues of Lucky Peach, ACQTASTE, Gather Journal, The Gourmand and Wilder Quarterly.
Finally, a selection of limited edition prints from previous shows at 18 Hewett Street will be available, and we've got plenty of Protein gifts including the brand new 2013 Protein Calendar, Bompas & Parr ouija board tea towels, and Good & Proper tote bags to make sure you've got the best goodies this Christmas. come by from12pm on Friday where we'll be serving Family turkey tacos, Lily Vanilli absinthe hot chocolate and The Boilermaker hot mulled cider to keep you fuelled.
Our friends at TOMS will be setting up a GIVE Shop at The Old Truman Brewery just off Brick Lane over the weekend too, where there'll be acoustic gigs and craft workshops, so make sure you drop by after!"
