Búntà's Friday Night Residency at The Shop in Kensal Rise

Búntà, inspired by both Naples and Saigon, returns to The Shop in Kensal Rise from Friday 3rd May for a regular residency of Saigon Street Food, every Friday night for the summer.

"Four years in Saigon, haunting its streets and alleyways and getting to taste some of the city's finest street side food, gave me the idea of lifting this indelible experience and bringing it to the streets of London, capital of Europe's international food fest where I have been based on and off for a number of years.
My Vietnamese tryst, combined with my lifelong passion for cooking, inspired my "Búntà" street food.
The concept of "Búntà" is based on authentic Saigon road-side food, packed with flavour but light and nourishing, healthy and tasty. The seasonal freshness of locally-grown produce is at the heart of our ethos, and the dishes can be adapted for Vegetarians, Vegans and omnivores alike. All our dishes are Gluteen Free.
We, at Búntà specialize in hand-made Steamed Buns & BBQ, using only quality ingredients.
Our amazing Buns come fresh from the steamer before your eyes.
Our Meats are naturally-raised because we believe that makes everything taste better.
We make our Pickles from scratch using the traditional method of rice vinegar and sugar and then marinating them with red chilis and Garlic. The multi-day process is long, but well worth the effort. Carrots and Daikon roots pickles give our steamed Buns and Vermicelli salads distinct sweet and savoury background flavours that are the hallmark of Vietnamese cuisine."

When - Friday evenings from 3rd May

Where - The Shop NW10, 75 Chamberlayne Road, Kensal Rise, NW10 3ND

The StockMKT Early Bank Holiday Night Market in Kingston

The StockMKT is back for the first Thursday in May (just before the May Bank Holiday Monday) with an appearance in Kingston.  Inspired by the night markets of the Far East, it's a mix of eating and shopping, with DJs, and a very cool vibe.

"In September 2012 The StockMKT night market debuted at Kingston Market Place. The clouds parted, the rain stopped and the sun shone… on the righteous (and us too!) It was a rip roarer - and thanks to you all for coming down, eating, drinking, dancing, blogging and tweeting.
The street food - Oh the street food! From the capital’s best pizzas, to Wild Game, to genuine Breton crepes to the largest selection of Scotch Eggs on Planet Earth, Kingstonians went mad for it.
But, crucially for our family friendly mission, we also had amazing interactive games from the awesome students of Kingston Universe, great sounds from our in-house DJs Culture Cuts and the amazing Albert Ball’s Flying Aces - maybe the coolest 20s ragtime and jazz band in town.
It was so popular, people wanted us back the following week, so for summer 2013 we have a number of night markets planned for Kingston: May 2nd is just the beginning.
So what’s new at the May 2nd Kingston StockMKT?
Some old favourites and some new to London traders:
Healthy stuff: More delicious street eats from Thailand, Korea & Japan. The kind of goodness corporate noodle chains can only dream of serving up.
Bad (meaning good) stuff: And, if the idea of ‘healthy’ frightens you, don’t panic we’ll have some of the ooziest burgers in London, unctuous pulled pork and the most fantastic array of sausage products known to humankind.
Classy stuff: Cocktails made from proper fresh ingredients by people passionate about their spirits.
Sweet stuff: Real Italian gelato, sherbets and sorbets, cakes to die for (and yes cupcakes – people can’t get enough of them, so they’re back).
Take home stuff: We have a jewellery cluster, handmade home accessories, plus loads of upcycled and vintage wear from new stallholders.
Ear stuff: DJs Culture Cuts and The JC Carroll Acoustic Trio, and we also have some quirky new friends on the bill, throwing their musical magic into the mix!"

Photo Review - Charlie Stocker at The Old Sessions House in Clerkenwell

Last night I was lucky enough to be invited along to the first night of Charlie Stocker's fine dining pop-up at The Old Sessions House in Clerkenwell Green.

Charlie came to fame as a contestant in 2012's Masterchef: The Professionals, and he's been running pop-ups since then.

In fact I felt very much like a Masterchef judge as course after course of beautifully presented delicious food came out.

I didn't take a picture of everything, but here is the menu and 5 of the courses.  Pardon the camera phone and the Instagram tints.

It's sold out tonight, but he will be back...

Forza Win Rooftop Pizza in East London

Forza Win, the rooftop pizza restaurant that was such a huge hit last summer, and spawned the 'Forza Winter' fondue over the colder months, is back in another secret location in East London, running Thursday - Saturday from the end of May until mid September.  This one is going to sell out really quickly - people who booked last year have already been allowed to book for this year, but now general booking has opened.

The Soho Food Feast 2013

The Soho Food Feast is a two day event where chefs from some of Soho's best restaurants get together to raise money for the Soho Parish Primary School.  I went last year - see my review here - For an entrance fee - £15 for one day or £20 for both - you get access and can see the events and demonstrations; you then pay extra for dinner tickets, each of which can be swapped for dishes at the stalls.  Each of the stalls produces a dish that can be bought for one ticket, showing that great chefs can produce great food at a good price.  This year it's on two days, Saturday 8th & Sunday 9th June, with different food on each day; see the full list below.  Tickets for both days go on sale on Tuesday 7th May at 9am.  Decisions, decisions...

Salmon from Hix, 2012
"The Soho Food Feast is back for 2013, after a hugely successful second year last year. This year it will be a two day extravaganza... bringing together some of London’s most high-profile and highly-respected chefs, restaurateurs and producers in support of Soho Parish Primary School. Last year, nearly £35,000 was raised, and organiser Margot Henderson has every intention of making this year’s Feast bigger and better in every way.
With demonstrations, tastings and cooking contests on the agenda, guests will have the chance to mingle with the great and the good of London’s food scene in a relaxed, festive and family-friendly environment.
Saturday 8th June: 10 Greek Street, Brindisa, Cabana, Cinnamon Soho, Dean St Townhouse, Fresh Olive Company, Hix, Kopapa, Koya, Meat Liquor, Mestizo, Natoora, Polpo, PitStop Café, Quo Vadis, Rochelle Canteen, Terroirs, The Groucho Club, The Union, Wright Brothers
Sunday 9th June: Barrafina, Bone Daddies, Brindisa, Cabana, Carom, Century, Ceviche, Chipotle, DSTRKT, GAIL's Kitchen, GBK, Kettners, Natoora, Meat Mission, Pizza Pilgrims, Selin Kazim, St John Restaurant, Tuscanic, Trullo."

M1lk in collaboration with chef Damian Wawrzyniak present 'Urami' or 'A Last Supper' in Balham

M1lk, a bar in Balham, has teamed up with chef Damien Wawrzyniak, who was recently at Noma in Copenhagen to create a special 8 course feast on Saturday 11th May, themed around the Shinto principle of 'urami'.  The evening will be 'bloody, communal food filth' - sounds like a very special event!

"Damian is a hugely talented Chef who came on board with M1LK's development team early this year. His CV is a string of positions in some of Europe's best kitchen's most recently the 2 Michelin* Noma in copenhagen where he worked under Rene Redzepi. During his time in the Noma kitchen and Food Lab he began working with cultures and fermentation and since then has been experimenting with bacterias and ageing in M1LK's development kitchen.
"Its a one off pop up supper from M1LK and Noma's Damian Wawrzyniak. Its an 8 course supper based on the shinto creation stories and is an exploration of fermentation, death, decay. The food will be inspired by the shinto principle of 'urami'. Urami basically means 'grudge' and is used to describe the echo that shame/evil/violence leaves. It is a hugely potent idea in the Shinto philosophy. The meal will be gruesome, delicious and visceral. (think sousvide whole pigs head that you pull apart with knives, 3 month aged beef seared w pine needles on hot granite rocks at the table, fermented vegetable ice cream and black miso toffee"
These 8 courses will be paired with wines curated by our mates at the Wine Shop and will include a lot of their wines.
"The Wine Shop have curated an impressive list of incredibly natural wines from really unusual vineyards from around the world. Wine will contain really wild sediments and unique flavours to match the boldnes of the flavours in the dishes. An example one in particular called Some Young Punks is one the cafe owners Julians favourite boutique wine from Melbourne. Really hard to find here in the Uk but Julia has ordered in especially for this event."
The evening will be bloody, communal food filth. There will be flashing images of 1940's black and white japanese cinema projected on the walls, brash unapologetic wine and enough glitchy electro to make the Knife look like a taylor swift tribute band. (Damian used to dj rave nights in Germany in the 90's while he was working in his first michelin kitchen)
The supper will be 8 courses w matching liquids presented by Chef Damian and his team."

When - Saturday 11th May

Where - M1LK, 20 BEDFORD HILL, BALHAM, SW12 9RG

Tickets - £60 + fees from here Tickets are being released a few at a time

Dalston Roof Park Rooftop Bar for Summer 2013

Update - Open fromMay - Sept 2015

Now that spring seems to be finally here, we're getting announcements of the summer residencies, many of which happen on rooftops.  One such is the return of Background Bars to Dalston Roof Park, a space between Dalston Kingsland and Dalston Junction, open Tuesday - Sunday with events, screenings, cocktails, and lots of interesting street food.  Looks like I'll be spending a lot of the summer on the Ginger Line!

"Following last year’s successful summer residency, Background Bars are all set to return to Dalston Roof Park from Thursday 2nd May. The imaginative pop-up bar and events company will draw on the venue’s edible garden using its home grown fruit, vegetables and herbs to mix cocktails with a variety of teas such as Oolong, green tea, Earl Grey and English breakfast. They will also be introducing and showing their support to local breweries and cold-pressed cider merchants.
What’s more each month, DRP will invite exciting up-and-coming street food vendors to feed the crowd. Expect to see The Wing Men’s apple smoked chicken wings smothered in various sauces like the flaming peach, Korean BBQ and apricot hot sauce. Also popping up, Zoe’s Ghana Kitchen who will be hosting “Ghan-i-val!” and Franks Franks for the authentic hot dog.
There will also be free weekly film screenings on Tuesday, unplugged sessions and deep house DJs.
Situated in the heart of Dalston, DRP is an urban oasis overlooking Hackney’s Victorian buildings, London city’s skyscrapers and all the hustle and bustle of the streets down below. The venue is home to Dalston’s first community roof allotment. It brims with flowers, fruits and vegetables around the periphery and is fully solar powered. The bar also has an inflatable roof which keeps the crowd sheltered if it rains… it is British summertime after all!"

Laura and Kiki from A Grape Night In have announced a new project - a weekly pop-up wine bar every Wednesday at The SkyRoom near Bermondsey Street, London Bridge (a space on the 5th floor, with great views).  Each month will have a theme, and the theme for all the Wednesdays in May is 'Underground'.  Note that the bar is not underground - it's still in the same 5th floor space!

"#WineWednesdays in May are going...  UNDERGROUND
See what hidden secrets are revealed as we delve into the depths of the London wine scene.  As wine afficionados decend on the capital for the annual trade fair, A Grape Night In will uncover a wealth of treasures available in the cellars of London.
Recognising that #WineWednesdays is quite possibly the most civilised way to ensure sanity during the tough working week, A Grape Night In are proud to present a wine bar with a difference in the stunning rooftop space, The Skyroom in London Bridge. Each month will showcase a topical theme with a carefully selected wine list paired with delectable side plates created by a guest chef of the highest pedigree.
There are two options available. Go for the full tasting experience and savour a wine flight consisting of three beautiful wines paired with three tantalising dishes. The Girls will be on hand to guide you through the flavours, feed in tidbits of information and answer any questions where needed. All of this plus a welcome cocktail for an amazing £20. Places are limited so booking is advisable.
Or if you are more interested in a casual meet up with friends you can still drop for a seat in the wine bar and order from the menu at your leisure. "

When - Wednesday evenings from 1st May

Where - The Skyroom, Fifth floor, Magdalen House, 136-148 Tooley Street, SE1 2TU

The Bermondsey Food Festival near London Bridge

On Wednesday 15th May a new foodie event London Bridge Open Kitchen is taking place outside White Cube in Bermondsey Street, featuring Jose Pizarro, Platterform, Cave and others.  It's £15 to get in, and for that you get 5 small plates; further dishes (& drinks) can be bought.

"London Bridge was once a mass of wharves and warehouses storing grain, dairy produce, spices and tea, with breweries and mills set back from the river. Known as London’s Larder it was the heart of the capital’s food industry and it is now taking firm strides to recapture some of this reverence.
On 15th May we're taking locavorism to a whole new level by bringing six fine dining establishments within a one mile radius all together for an evening food festival, London Bridge Open Kitchen, at South London's newest arts attraction, White Cube Bermondsey.
The participants will include veterans Jose Pizarro and Village East as well new up-and-comers Brigade and Platterform. Neighbourhood favourites Constancia and Cave complete the line-up. They will be working together to offer London’s gastronomic adventurers a truly memorable evening while sending a message that 2013 is the year that London Bridge truly emerges on the foodie map.
London Bridge Open Kitchen will run for one evening only, from 18:00 to 21:00. Tickets are on sale for £15 per person and include five taster plates from Pizarro, Platterform, Village East, Brigade and Constancia. Drinks will be available for purchase from Platterform and Cave. The festival will take place outside the White Cube in the venue’s street facing courtyard and will be open air."

When - Wednesday 15th May, 6pm - 9pm

Where - White Cube Bermondsey, 144-152 Bermondsey Street, SE1 3TQ

Tavolone's Roman Spring Supper Club in Shoreditch

Tavolone, the supper club held at the ad agency Mother, is back and asking you to 'put spring in your mouth' with a special feast including Saltimbocca alla Romana at the ad agency Mother in Shoreditch.  Wines are being supplied by Pipai.co.uk, a young wine importer from Italy.  It's always a great nigh at Tavolone, and very friendly, with everyone sat around one big table, and having tasted what they're capable of with both lamb and pork I can guarantee that this will be a treat for your tastebuds!

"Finally, finally, at last Tavolone is emerging from hibernation and we are back to help you feel the spring with our supper club downstairs at Mother on the 2nd of May starting at 7pm. Giorgio is flying in especially from Rome and bringing with him some culinary surprises.
Together we have designed the perfect mix of early spring delights combining freshly made Pesto alla Genovese within a light Lasagne followed by one of the most renowned classics of Italian cooking: the Saltimbocca alla Romana, which literally means 'jump into the mouth'..
This dish is so delicious with fresh spring herbs and it’s just perfect for this time of the year when we are in between seasons and your belly desires something both fresh and hearty. These Roman butterflyed meat filets are filled with prosciutto topped with fresh sage leaves and cooked in Marsala wine and butter and served with a spring salad.  We will end the meal with the essence of spring: homemade mint icecream with freshly sprouted mint from our own garden.
We should also mention that our friends at Pipai, a young and superb wine importer from Italy will pair each course with delicious wines. We have tried their wines and the verdict has been universal: they know what a good grape can add to a meal.

Aperitiv Aperol Spitz
