The Good Year Pop-up Wine Bar in Shoreditch

The Good Year is a pop-up wine bar from Mumtaz Lalani and David Payne, open in Great Eastern Stret on Thursday - Saturday nights from 21st May - 20th June.  It's a relaxed wine bar, aimed at demystifying wines and offering a great selection by the glass, with easy to understand explanations.

"From Thurs 21st May, wine lovers will have a new kind of bar they can visit to feed their curiosity. Creators Mumtaz Lalani and David Payne wanted to get away from a tradition of wine menus which are just ‘lists of names’, to make good wine more accessible to the many modern urban wine-lovers who don’t have encyclopedic knowledge of varietals and regions.  With this in mind, “The Good Year” will offer a highly curated and frequently-changing menu of wines by the glass, simply explained with reference to how the wines actually taste.
The Good Year will launch as a pop-up bar at the new Shoreditch location of Attendant CafĂ© on Great Eastern Street.  The first week of opening will coincide with London Wine Week, in which The Good Year will be participating (participants in LWW’s wristband scheme will have access to our special flight of Undiscovered Italian Whites in that week, as well as the daily menu).  Wines will be priced from £5 by the glass, with a smaller tasting size also available to encourage experimentation. Sommelier Mumtaz Lalani works closely with the best suppliers in London to choose beautiful wines with a focus on biodynamic and smaller producers and has lovingly selected a range of cheese from Androuet, salumi from Natoora and artisanal sourdoughs to accompany the wines.
As with the best of stories, Mumtaz and David entered the industry via a rather unconventional route. Both had studied at Oxford and pursued ‘deskbound’  careers through their twenties, taking breaks to train as a Sommelier (becoming certified by the Court of Master Sommeliers) and a chef (at the Cordon Bleu) respectively, until a friend, recognising their shared love of wine, introduced them. Several glasses of Spatburgunder later (a German pinot noir that’s a must-try on the menu!) and The Good Year was conceived. The idea is simple and was born out of discussions with friends who enjoyed drinking good wine but were frustrated by having to decipher menus containing names they weren’t familiar with. Mumtaz and David wanted to address this and realised the best way to do so was to start their own place. To this end, The Good Year’s philosophy centres around de-formalising wine and making it more accessible to people; this is reflected in the way the menu is written and their friendly and approachable staff. Expect a relaxed environment for people to imbibe, and to learn more about their preferred style of wine in the process!"
