Hackney-on-Sea Pop-Up Restaurant & Tim Mara Exhibition in Broadway Market

The imaginative people at The Art of Dining are taking over F. Cooke's Fish Bar in Broadway Market at the end of January to stage an exhibition of Tim Mara's art, and hold a 3-night pop-up restaurant.

‘At home’, above the restaurant is an original 1970’s family home presenting an exhibition of some of the most innovative and skilled screen prints produced in the 1970-90’s by British Royal Academy professor and artist Tim Mara (1948-1997)."

The Max Turner Prize - One Week Stand up Comedy Contest in Stockwell - NOW FINISHED

The Cavendish Arms in Stockwell is one of the best places in the capital to see new comedy talent.  Their regular Comedy Virgins nights allow experienced comics and complete beginners to get up on stage in front of a room of people to try their material out.

Every year they hold a contest to find the best comedian from the regular performers.  It's called The Max Turner Prize in honour of a regular performer at the pub who died about 3 years ago.  I've been a few times and it's a great night out.  Clearly the quality of the acts is variable, but they all try to do their best for the competition.

It starts on Monday 9th, with 4 people going through from each of the 5 heats, to reach the final on Saturday 14th.  Generally it gets busier as the week goes on, and the Saturday final is standing room only.

When - Monday 9th - Saturday 14th January

Where - The Cavendish Arms, 128 Hartington Rd, Stockwell, SW8 2HJ

2 Pop-up Shop Spaces in Portobello Road

One of the things I'm going to be doing a lot more of this year is to list some of the available spaces for people to use to open their own shops and eating places.  I've got some in my Advice & Resources section, but I'll try to add more here too.

I spotted this one at the weekend in Portobello Road while out with Laura & Ivy.  There are two units - one on the corner of Portobello Road & Blenheim Cresent, and one a few doors along on Portobello Road.

Address - 199 & 201 Portobello Road (separate spaces)

Availability - 1 week tenures.  Apparently both are booked up long in advance, but they do get cancellations, so it's worth trying.

Fly53 Pop-up Shop in Soho

Clothes retailer Fly53 have opened a pop-up shop in Soho, near to the bottom or Berwick Street.  It opened before Christmas, but it's still open, and now offering some very good discounts.

"Representing the creative and rebellious voice of the brand, a tongue in cheek ride through the heritage of the last 53 years inspired by b-movies, iconographical images and rock and roll sitting in amongst the drugs and porn of Soho, the store is a great portrayal of what we stand for.
Over the years the brand has built a reputation of credible association within music and design by partnering some of the best in the business. The shop mixes this affiliation with a killer tee collection, knits and sweats and some great accessories.
Located at 22 Peter Street in the heart of bustling Soho, its in a great spot, easy to get to, with a lot going on around us. Make sure you fly by."

When - Opened mid December - probably open until Mid-January
