Miss Cakehead and Kraken Rum's Valentine's Day Black Rose Florist off Carnaby Street

Another new project from the gruesome imagination of Miss Cakehead:  Famous for her grisly cakes, she has created a florist selling flowers as dark as Thak Kraken's ink, in collaboration with Kraken Rum, to open for one day only, Valentine's Day 2014, which conveniently falls on a Friday.

"Macabre bouquets are arranged in GRAVE VASES and come with a bottle of THE KRAKEN RUM in place of the traditional champagne option. There is even a choice of 2 messages, ‘TAKE ME WHOLE' or 'SWALLOW ME PIECE BY PIECE’, with lyrics taken from The Kraken Rum Sea Shanty recorded by Ross Millard of The Futureheads.
The pop-up florist forms part of The Kraken Rum’s KRAKEN VERSUS CUPID campaign, by macabre and infamous Miss Cakehead. Found in Kingley Court, just off Carnaby Street, London, the Think Ink florist is open for one day only - the 14th  February 2014 - offering a range of black floral options in return for a voluntary donation to the Project Redsand charity.
The black roses for sale are created by placing dark red roses in vases filled with a Kraken’s ink in place of water. This ink is then transported up the stem, via the xylem, to the leaves and petals turning them black, a scientific process that will also be showcased in the space. For dramatic effect some of the flowers will also be turned black using special floristry dyes. There are no naturally black flowers - a truly black flower is as mysterious and alluring as a Kraken – with the endangered very dark crimson Turkish Halfeti roses the closest nature can offer. However the bouquets will also feature Calendula Lily Eclips and Queen of the Night Tulips, both darkest purple in colour looking visually black to the human eye.
Kept fresh in pools of black ink, the flowers all come with a miniature bottle of 5cl Kraken Rum, available in the UK from Summer 2014. Currently Kraken Rum is only available in 70cl bottles.
What’s more the London based The Diner group will be serving a one off Kraken Vs Cupid Valentine’s drink in all of their 7 venues, a perfect location in which to celebrate an alternative Valentine’s Day. The activity also continues at ‘The Mesmerist’ in Brighton which will be turned into an inky den for the Kraken Vs. Cupid Valentine’s party.
The Think Ink Florist will be open from 0800 until all the bouquets are sold, they are offered on a first come first served basis with one bouquet per customer. Due to the accompanying rum only those aged 18 or over may purchase a bouquet."

Baketopia's Two Day Cake Pop-up off Carnaby Street

Baking is so hot right now!  To warm us up for National Baking Week, the wonderful Miss Cakehead is curating two days of cake in Kingly Court, off Canaby Street on 11th & 12th October.  Register below to ensure that you can get in - there are 3,000 portions of cake but I'm sure they won't last for ever!

"To celebrate National Baking Week 14th – 20th October, the infamous Miss Cakehead is curatinga team of the UK’s finest food artists to create a 100% edible pop-up—in the form of a magical meadow—in London’s Kingly Court, just off Carnaby Street.
The pop-up, entitled ‘Baketopia’, will be open to the sweet-toothed public on Friday 11th and Saturday the 12th of October. The Wonka-esque landscape will feature over 3000 portions of baked goods for guests to devour over two days—everything is edible and everything must go.
The Tattooed Bakers, Nevie Pie Cakes, Caking It and Conjurer’s Kitchen are just some of the contributors to the project, which is also supported by John Whaite, National Baking Week’s ambassador and the winner of the 2012 Great British Bake Off.
John has created five exclusive recipes for National Baking Week, some of which will be baked into the pop-up for visitors to harvest for themselves and take away.
Inside Baketopia — which is being created with the help of National Baking Week’s supporters, Pyrex, Stork, JUS-ROL, Nielsen-Massey, JUST MILK, Billington’s and Kenwood – guests will also be able to dip frog-shaped cookies into a milk fountain; harvest meringue mushrooms; break honeycomb pieces from a bee hive; catch pastry butterflies and even pull hyper realistic looking carrot cakes from chocolate cookie earth.
The centrepiece of the tasty tableau will be a giant unicorn, created by the Tattooed Bakers, made from rainbow cake and complete with edible gold leaf embossed hooves and horn.
To show their appreciation, guests will be encouraged to make a £2 donation to Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s      Charity, National Baking Week’s charity partner. All donations will go towards a ward kitchen for the hospital's brand new respiratory unit.
Miss Cakehead comments: “It’s a dream come true for our collective to get creative for National Baking Week. It felt only right for us to make a utopian landscape, good enough to eat, which would inspire others to bake.”
Alexandra Blyth, Marketing Manager at Pyrex, founder and lead supporter of National Baking Week says: “Baketopia is the ultimate celebration of baking.  This magical installation will kick-off a fantastic week of activities to excite experienced bakers and novices alike to rise up and join the baking revolution.”"

When - Friday 11th & Saturday 12th October, 12pm m- 7pm

Miss Cakehead's Depressed Cake Shop in Brick Lane

The brilliant Miss Cakehead is back with a new charity project - a cake shop full of grey, depressed cakes, to raise money for, and awareness of, mental health issues.  It'll be in Suzzle, Brick Lane from 2nd - 4th August, and then on tour around the UK (venues at the bottom of her blog post) Would be bakers can get involved - see the contact details at the bottom of this page.

"Time to announce the 2013 Cakehead Loves charity project… The Depressed Cake Shop, a unique pop up cake shop where every single cake on sale will be grey, colour only revealed on the inside. Opening in London on the 2nd – 4th August, there are also lots of other pop up events taking place in the UK. We’re currently looking for even more bakers to raise funds and anyone who may be interested in hosting a similar cake shop anywhere in the World!
One in four people will suffer from mental illness at some point in their lives – The Depressed Cake shop will provide a unique platform on which to raise awareness of and discuss mental health issues (with a focus on depression), whilst at the same time raising valuable funds for a mental health charity.  It will open up discussion about mental illness, and engage people with the issues that stems from this disease, making sure people DO talk about the issues.
The symptoms of depression can be complex – and vary widely – and so will our cakes. But as a general rule, if you are depressed, you feel sad, hopeless and lose interest in things you used to enjoy. The professional and hobby bakers contributing work to this event will be creating cakes that visually represent this… For example barely decorated cakes or cookies will communicate how depression can affect your ability to work, the grey & dull consistent color scheme that all fun can disappear from life. This will be a cake shop like nothing else seen before, the grey sad looking but delicious tasting cakes powerfully demonstrating the effects of depression.
Many of our cakes will also be made by those with personal experiences of depression, using baking as a way of expressing their struggles with, and experiences of, the illness.  Through seeking sponsorship we also aim to hold a series of baking therapy sessions around the UK, and set up a support network for those who use baking to help combat depression.
The shop will be open in London from the 2nd – 4th August 2013, with other events also taking part around the UK.  Anyone wishing to join in with the project should join the depressed cake group on Facebook or contact emma@misscakehead.com"

When - Fri 2nd - Sun 4th August

Miss Cakehead's Halloween 'Eat Your Heart Out' Cake Shop with Kraken Rum in Shoreditch

Miss Cakehead's 'Eat Your Heart Out' grisly cake shop returns for the third year running from 25th - 28th October.  Expect cakes that on the surface look disturbing or revolting, but are as delicious as any you're ever likely to taste.  Wounds, body parts, maggots, pus...  It's all here, with a special 'mouth of Kraken' too, and lots of rum.

"Eat Your Heart Out, the London based globally infamous Halloween pop up cake shop, is back for it’s third year and will be open from the 25th – 28th at The Rag Factory in Brick Lane. The edible art show and cake shop is entitled ‘Feed The Beast’ and is supported by The Kraken Rum. All the cakes have a beastly theme with the top sellers predicted to include vagina dentata cupcakes by The Tattooed Bakers, a ‘Wounds’ cupcake set by Cake Revolution and interactive maggot extraction cupcakes by Twisted Fondant which allow for mango flavoured maggots and pus to be removed prior to eating.
Incredible life-sized rum liqueur chocolate body parts are set to be another show (or appetite) stopper – disturbingly realistic they are created using casts of food artists Kate Haigh’s own hands and feet.
Anyone with a love of extreme cakes will not be disappointed with the large ‘Mouth of Kraken’ creation by Heartache Cakes for it comes with almost 100 individual hand made chocolate teeth and a terrifying sense of foreboding destined to set even the most gore hardened cake lovers on edge. Mouth of Kraken cupcakes have also been created for for those only able to deal with less toothy sweet creations.
If you find cakes replicating giant bloody eyeballs of mythical beasts, chocolate skulls and rocky road topped with stitched detail too much for you then The Kraken Rum will also be available in the space to steady the nerves – the dark spiced rum also being used in many of the treats on sale ensuring they make look disturbing but will always taste delicious."

When - Friday 25th - Sunday 27th October 2013

Where - The Rag Factory, 16-18 Heneage St  London E1 5LJ

'Eat Your Heart Out' Cakes & Cocktails in Smithfield

I like to think that I cover some pretty unusual and interesting things on this site, but every so often something comes along that looks and sounds totally insanely good.  One such is Miss Cupcake's Eat Your Heart Out adults only cake shop, with anatomically correct cakes, and with specially designed cocktails, held in a pathology museum.  What could be better?  It's open for 3 days in late October; put it in your diaries now.

Cakes
"Salutations, you fine young cake-eaters, and welcome to The Evil Cake Shop; brain, heart and spleen-child of Miss Cakehead, Freelance Creative Director and Pqrt-Time Curator of Cakes. Make yourselves comfortable, have a nosey around and get your fingers sticky as you sample some of the naughtiest wares never to grace a common bakery.
The Evil Cake Shop has been shock-chocking the innocent and not-so-innocent since 2010, when Miss Cakehead and her team of reprobate bakers fashioned the world’s first 18+ cake shop, Eat your Heart Out & The PRETOX Potion (supported by Alibi PRETOX). It followed our summer event Cake Britain, a 100% edible art exhibition (supported by Tate & Lyle).
We coordinated pop ups throughout the UK, taking pride in a precise anatomical approach to cake that meant realistically filthy sugar-spun gashes of flesh, gruesome gouged-out eyes and fearsome vagina dentata. These cakes were literally to die for.
And now Eat Your Heart Out is back for 2012, more devilish and decadent than ever. Exhibits and exhibitionism will be documented for your titillation and salivation; every naughty little DD cup-cake, every dirty little tart will be blogged here to keep you a-breast of events and the ridiculously talented people we meet along the way.
Ever keen for the taste of something new, we’re also on the look-out for cake bakers who have the heart and, indeed, the stomach to bake up more sick treats. If your cakes are more carnal than carnival, please do get in touch."

Cocktails
"We are so excited at being able to have a bar in the Eat Your Heart Out space this year which leads me to this… A variety of disturbing medically inspired cocktails will be on sale at Miss Cakehead’s Eat Your Heart Out being held from the 26th – 29th October. Stool samples, stomach contents of a suicide victim and charred remains of a suicide bomber just some of the inspiration for the range of cocktails.
The cocktails are being created by James Dance of Loading, a Falmouth based internet café and games arcade and go way beyond anything seen before.   For example the flavoured vodka in ‘Stomach Contents’ hasn’t been skimmed to purposefully ensure it will visibly contain the perfect teenage diet of chocolate pieces and skittles, the drink garnished with empty pill casings. A shot of absinthe on the top will be reflective of the green hue of stomach bile."

When - 26th - 28th October

Where - The Pathology Museum, 3rd Floor Robin Brook Centre (outpatients entrance), (Bart’s Hospital site), West Smithfield, London EC1M 6BQ
OK - that's pretty confusing.  What you need to do is to go to the pub The Butcher's Hook & Cleaver, 60-63 West Smithfield, EC1A 9DY, and it's the entrance to St Bart's nearest that.

Advance warning – you’re going to want to be in London over the Easter weekend,  as MessHead (Miss Cakehead and London Mess) are ‘frying tonight’ in their 'Fry Hard' pop-up at Boxpark.  They’ll be frying everything from Crème Eggs, Mars Bars, cheese strings, chocolate cake, crumpets…  (We'll have all been very abstemious over Lent, of course)  Bring your own, or get one from their selection, and they’re even asking for creative suggestions via Facebook.
The event takes place from Thurs 2nd April to Sunday 5th April, with two warm-up events on Columbia Road on Sundays 22nd & 29th March

"Culinary renegades ‘messhead’ (a recently formed partership between Miss Cakehead and London Mess) are offering a totally unique eating experience this Easter, a pop-up venture where every single item on sale will be deep fried. Inspired by the iconic die hard movie this is truly a different Easter event - expect tied up Easter bunnies and blood splattered not pastel coloured eggs.

Opening at BOXPARK in Shoreditch on Thursday 2nd April at 11am – with lots of special offers on Good Fry-Day (Friday 3rd April) - Messhead have selected over 100 different items to deep fry, both sweet & savoury with the menu changing daily. His experiments so far have included deep frying cheese-strings, deep fried buttered crumpet, cheese filled hot cross buns and Tunnock’s Caramel. It’s a given that classics such as crème eggs and other popular confectionary will also included.

All photos (c) by Travis Hodges
On Easter Sunday a fully fried Easter will be offered consisting of a whole fried lamb joint, roast potatoes, rosemary, carrots and sprouts, serving 6 this will need to be booked in advance.

The Walking Dead #TerminusTavern 'Human Burger' Pop-up nr Brick Lane

Messhead - aka Miss Cakehead and London Mess Chef James Thomlinson, have come up with an amazing one-day free giveaway to promote the launch of the new season of The Walking Dead (from 13th Oct on Fox) - burgers that are supposedly made of human flesh!  Find them (for free) at a secret venue (subtle clue below) from noon on Tuesday 30th September, while stocks last...

"London based food art creators Messhead - formed by London Mess Chef James Thomlinson and creative Miss Cakehead, renowned for their macabre flair in the world of food, have come up with a unique burger concept that will push normal levels of taste to it’s very limits. The fearless zombie loving foodies are shuffling headfirst towards the last great taboo - cannibalism - and wickedly fusing it with one of the most iconic snacks on the planet. Their ‘human’ meat burgers are set to delight and horrify in equal measure as hungry punters relish the new dizzyingly devilish taste of eating ‘a fellow human’. The cannibalistic concept was, of course, inspired by the Season 4 finale of Fox’s zombie thriller “The Walking Dead” in which Rick and the group found piles of bloodied bones on the floor at Terminus which looked like human remains – and gives a taster of what ‘Walkers’ from the series enjoy feasting on.
On Tuesday 30th September the pop up concept – found in East London - will give away the human burgers for free from midday until sold out. The burgers were developed by Thomlinson using painstaking research into appalling instances when eating a fellow human being was the very last option for survival. One such example was when the 1920’s author and journalist William Seabrook traveled to West Africa and later described the experience of devouring a hunk of homo sapiens meat in his book, Jungle WaysIt was like good, fully developed veal, not young, but not yet beef. It was very definitely like that, and it was not like any other meat I had ever tasted. It was so nearly like good, fully developed veal that I think no person with a palate of ordinary, normal sensitiveness could distinguish it from veal.
Chef James Thomlinson used a mix of veal, beef and pork and create the burgers. He comments:
“With fans up and down the country hungry for Season 5 of The Walking Dead, this is certainly a unique tribute to the series. My food is inspired by flavor combinations and fresh produce, so it was a little odd to be inspired by the words of cannibals instead.”
The burgers will be given away from a custom built stand that recreates the apocalyptic feeling of Terminus where Series 4 ended. Those brave punters who want to know more about how to create the particular piquancy of person will be able to see the cannibal research in the form of an info graphic which the burgers will come wrapped in. A unique “The Walking Dead” condiment will also be on sale at Terminus Tavern, though best not to ask the source of that sauce!
Season 4 of The Walking Dead left us reeling with unanswered questions and cliffhangers.
Where is Beth? How will the group escape Terminus? Will Tyreese, Carol and baby Judith find the others? Season 5 premieres on Monday 13th October 9om on FOX and is set to be intense and exhilarating. The story weaves the true motives of the people of Terminus with the hopeful prospect of a cure in Washington. The fate of the group’s lost comrades, as well as new locales, new conflicts, and new obstacles in keeping the group together and staying alive. After all they’ve done, all they’ve sacrificed, lost, and held onto no matter what the cost...Who do they become?"

When - Tuesday 30th September from 12 noon

Pop-up 'Geek Cakes' Shop in Covent Garden - NOW FINISHED

As part of internet week, to celebrate 'the joy of Geek Cakes', and to raise money for research into pancreatic cancer, blogger Miss Cakehead is setting up a cake shop for one day only at The Hospital Club.  The main tag for the coverage is cakes inspired by Steve Jobs, but there will be others to enjoy too.

"All of the cakes will be ‘geek’ or ‘mac’ inspired with contributions from a range of bakers including Angry Bird cupcakes, cookies featuring portraits of Steve Jobs, Twitter inspired treats, cookie replicas of iPhones and their applications, ‘Mac’ shaped apple pies & even an 100% edible life sized creation of a Mac lap top."

When - Wednesday 9th November, 9.30am - 6pm

Where - The Hospital Club, 24 Endell Street, London, WC2H 9HQ

Resident Evil Revelations' 'Blood' Swimming Pool near Hackney Wick

This event is literally (ok, figuratively) mind blowing:  To publicise the release of the game Resident Evil Revelations a 'blood' swimming pool is popping up for two days only.  Yes, you can swim in the blood, amidst floating debris.  There will also be zombie lifeguards (to keep you safe) and special merchandise.  Mind blown!

It's on the Saturday and Sunday of the late May bank holiday, and it's free, but there are only 100 tickets for each day, released at 9am on Monday 20th May.

This is a PR campaign from Miss Cakehead (www.misscakehead.com)

"Marking the release of Resident Evil Revelations - which sees a return to the survival horror roots of the series - Capcom are set to open a ‘blood’ filled swimming pool nestled in the shadow of the Olympic stadium, London, UK. In addition to its bloody appearance the swimming pool will offer floats in the form of human torsos, feature brains and intestines as lane markers, have Zombie lifeguards on duty and even offer a diving board in the form of a ‘freshly killed human corpse’.
Members of the public will be joined in the bloody red coloured water by terrifying sights like: floating eyeballs complete with tendrils and drifting blood clots. Whilst the dreaded swimming-pool-floating-plaster-situation we remember from our school days will be made even more disgusting with the use of bloody bandages. Zombie lifeguards will be on duty ensuring safety and enforcing a unique set of zombie pool rules. Zombie pool rules prohibit brain eating, bleeding or limb shedding in the pool. The public will need to collect any commemorative game merchandise they wish to keep from the bottom of the diseased pool, which will also be littered with bottles of both the T-Virus and Anti-Virus vials.
The Resident Evil Revelations blood swimming pool is set against the backdrop of abandoned cruise ship Queen Zenobia, where much of the action in Resident Evil Revelations takes place, with elements recreated in an East London canal side location. All the expected swimming pool facilities will be provided on site with a bloody twist, Capcom advising that those who are not a fan of blood splatter on their towels bring their own. Brain swimming pool caps will be provided to all those who wish to swim in the pool with blood splashed goggles also available for loan.
The 16ft by 32ft pool is over one metre deep and contains an estimated 55,000 gallons of water (it would have taken the blood of 11,327 individuals to fill the swimming pool with human blood). Found a short stroll from Hackney Wick Station the open air pool is located in Jupiter Wharf, open to the public for two days on the 25th & 26th May. The blood red water has been created using a secret mixture of non-staining colorants specifically developed for the installation. Creating a unique and terrifying experience to mark the start of the open-air swimming pool season in the UK, the pool is only open to children aged 16+ and those under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
Anyone wishing to swim in the Resident Evil Revelations pool will need to gain their free ticket in advance by visiting: www.residentevil.eventbrite.com. Ticket sales go live on Monday 20th May at 0900, with only 100 tickets available for each day."

When - Saturday 25th & Sunday 26th May

Where - Jupiter Wharf, Wyke Road, Hackney Wick, E3 2PL

Tickets - It's free, but only 100 tickets are available for each day.  Tickets will be available here from 9am on Monday 20th May.
