Valentine's Day at The Midnight Apothecary in Rotherhithe

The Midnight Apothocary, one of the hits of 2012, is holding a special Valentine's Day event, which includes a tour of the famous Thames Tunnel, a chilli chocolate brownie from a MasterChef winner, and a special Valentine's Cocktail.  It's pre-booking only this time, to stop it getting too busy, but after the tour you can stay and enjoy more drinks.

"All aboard the Love Train with the Midnight Apothecary!
Hold on tight for a Valentine treat with a difference - a train ride through the tunnel of love….
By kind permission of a pandering London Underground, the Thames Tunnel is floodlit for one night only.  Here was the World’s First Underwater Shopping Arcade.  Here also at the Thames Tunnel Fancy Fair were novelty acts, sword swallowers and female acrobats, and dark places where lovers might talk until morning…..
It is perhaps the most romantic of settings.  There were dinner parties and secret meetings in the Thames Tunnel, and here Brunel romanced a famous actress.
Descend, with or without a lover, to the Grand Entrance Hall.  Listen to the secret diaries of the famous Actress who met the famous Engineer in this famous underground haunt for lovers.  Then travel with your guide on a train through the Thames Tunnel, the Tunnel of Love.
£15 buys you a hot ticket aboard London Underground’s very own love train, a reading of a love story and secret diaries in an underground chamber, a Valentine cocktail from Midnight Apothecary in the Engine Room and a beautifully wrapped chilli chocolate brownie to warm your cockles from BBC MasterChef winner Julie Friend.
Lovers should make assignations in the entrance to the Brunel Museum 7pm, 8pm or 9pm.
Lovers must book online at http://www.brunel-museum.org.uk/events/valentine-special/
Bring the greatest aphrodisiac of all: Your OYSTER card!
Tour takes an hour.  After your exquisite free cocktail from the Midnight Apothecary, a cash bar is available throughout the evening in the Engine Room at the Brunel Museum."

When - Thursday 14th February at 7pm, 8pm or 9pm

Where - Brunel Museum, Railway Avenue, SE16 4LF

'Mile High: Destination Gothenburg' Pop-up Restaurant in West London

Mile High is an exciting new concept from four Templeton cousins, including ex Moro chef Oliver Templeton.  It's about the glamour and excitement of flight and travel, without ever leaving the ground.  The first 'destination' is Gothenburg and 'flights' leave in mid March.

"No rush hour scramble to the airport, no forgetting to print your boarding pass, no shake down at security, no delays and definitely no scratch cards.
Inspired by the golden age of air travel, when getting there was half the fun, Mile High takes the best bits of a weekend away - the food, the drink and the unexpected - and serves them up in style in a pop-up London venue.
From Harris tweed lounge suits to scarlet red lipstick, Mile High captures the swagger and sophistication of 1950s aviation, when leg room meant doing the twist and turbulence was a byproduct of the bar steward's cocktail shaker.
No need to dress up though, we've done that for you.
Mile High: Destination Göteborg 14th -16th March & 21st - 23rd March 2013
Sponsored by Campari, Aperol, Wild Turkey & SKYY Vodka; Mile High will be serving up a selection of delicious cocktails that include
- Aperol Spritz
- Mile High Martini
- Classic Negroni
Ex Moro Chef Oliver Templeton and his team will be cooking up a feast of Scandinavian delights with a British twist.
Menu
Pan friend scallops with pureed potato, charred spring onions and crispy garlic
Crayfish, brown shrimp, smoked bacon, soured cream, dark rye and tarragon
Char-grilled elk with golden beetroot, mushrooms, dill and cucumber salad
Lingonberry ice cream with carrot cake crumble and licorice meringue
Mile High diners will find all the ingredients they're looking for in the immersive 'city break'; the style, the exclusivity and the escapism. A weekend away, a cab ride away."

When - 14th - 16th & 20th - 23rd March

Where - A location in West London - revealed on booking

Tickets - £65 + fees - Includes - bar snacks, 4 course meal, 2 cocktails and wine with supper - from here

Super Tuscan Presents a Weekly Battle of the Bottles in Spitalfields

Super Tuscan, the Italian wine bar in Spitalifields, is holding a new weekly wine tasting night with a difference - the wines battle it out, with the ones deemed 'not worthy' removed from the Super Tuscan wine list.

"Super Tuscan, Spitalfields’ Italian wine bar, will launch a weekly Wine Challenge from the 13th February. Wine enthusiasts will have the opportunity to try a flight of 4 of the finest wines on the Super Tuscan list, not usually available by the glass, and see if they can spot the "Super Tuscan" among them. Get it right, and you get a second flight of wine on the house.
During the tasting you’ll be given the chance to learn about the Super Tuscan wine movement and how to recognise the major grape varieties, as well as gain inside knowledge on matching bold Tuscan reds with hearty Tuscan food. The Challenge will be priced at £15 per person, including a flight of 4 wines, or £20 per person with the inclusion of an assortment of Super Tuscan bruschetta and salumi. Bookings will be available for groups of between 2 and 10 people from 6pm-7.45pm every Wednesday, as of 13th February.
Opened by Nick Grossi in February 2012, Super Tuscan takes its name from the Italian winemaking movement that revolutionised the country’s vineyards in the 1970s. From subversive beginnings, when ‘Super Tuscan’ producers broke with the traditional classification regulations imposed on them, Super Tuscans have become among the most acclaimed and highly-valued of Italy’s wines."

When - Wednesdays from 13th February

Where - 8a Artillery Passage, E1 7LJ

Tickets - £15 per person, including a flight of 4 wines, or £20 per person with the inclusion of an assortment of Super Tuscan bruschetta and salumi, available from the bar on  020 7247 8171

Edible Cinema Presents Valentine's Screenings of Some Like It Hot in Shoreditch

Sorry - this one sold out within an hour of the tickets becoming available.  However there are lots of other Valentine's things to do - see here

Edible Cinema is a film experience where you eat specially created food while you watch.  Previous screenings have included Spirited Away and Beetlejuice (for Halloween).  Now they're bringing us Some Like it Hot for Valentine's week...  These sell out amazingly quickly; tickets go on sale on Thursday 31st January, and if you want to go put a reminder in your diary!

"On Sunday 17th February Edible Cinema, in partnership with Bombay Sapphire, will be showing two screenings of Some Like It Hot at the Aubin Cinema in Shoreditch.
Hailed as one of the funniest films of all time, Some Like It Hot is the ultimate ‘Rom Com’, an iconic film peppered with classic one-liners and featuring Marilyn Monroe in one of her finest roles. Valentine’s Edible Cinema is perfect for those who want to treat their loved one to an alternative romantic date or to enjoy with a group of friends.
Following Secret Cinema, scratch and sniff cinema and film scores re-imagined by DJs and musicians, Edible Cinema takes the experience into a new realm. It is a collaboration between Soho House, renowned  event organiser Polly Betton, experimental food designers Blanch and Shock and Bombay Sapphire mixologist Sam Carter. Two multi-sensory screenings of Some Like it Hot, Billy Wilder’s screwball comedy, will be enhanced by Edible Cinema’s integrated tasting experience.
Edible Cinema is a unique way to experience a film: through aroma, texture and taste.  On arrival, guests will be served a  Bombay Sapphire  Colonial Cocktail, a variation on the ‘Colony Cocktail’ invented during the Prohibition era of the 1920s when the film is set. The  combination of  grapefruit juice and  dry cherry liqueur combine to create a delightful rose taste. Each guest is then supplied with a tray of numbered mystery boxes containing a bite-sized tasting menu tailored to specific moments in the film. A number corresponding to a parcel is displayed just before the crucial moment, signaling guests to get stuck in and enjoy the edible treat.
Billy Wilder’s  legendary romantic comedy sees jazz musicians Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis escape the Chicago mob by disguising themselves as women and joining an all-female band who are on their way to perform in Miami. Marilyn Monroe plays ‘Sugar’, a troubled singer who gets caught up in the two musicians’ lives, and hilarity ensues. Guests can eat their way through the film's classic backdrops, from icy Chicago to the sunny Miami seaside - as the flavours, smells and textures underscore the action on screen.  Highlights include a ‘fuzzy lollipop’ when Sugar confides in Geraldine that when it comes to men she always gets ‘the fuzzy end of the lollipop’ and  ‘Champagne kisses’ consisting of smoky, booze-soaked truffles to be opened when Sugar showers Geraldine with champagne-soaked kisses aboard a borrowed yacht.  The ‘Bombay Sapphire  Spray of the Sea by the Seminole Ritz Hotel’ accompanies the ladies’ arrival at the seaside hotel and the ‘Mini Hot Bourbon Bottle’ combines Bombay Sapphire with cinnamon, crème de Cacao and a dash of vanilla recreating a bourbon flavor, which is secretly swilled from a hot water bottle on the train journey."

When - Sunday 17th February at 3pm and 6.30pm

Where - The Aubin Cinema, 64-66 Redchurch Street, Shoreditch, London E2 7DP

Tickets - Tickets are priced as follows:
Armchair seats £28pp
Sofa seats £60 (£30pp)
Deluxe sofa £64 (£32pp)
Angled seats £23pp
Available from ediblecinema@aubincinema.com from Thursday 31st January

Pop-up Britain's Pop-up Shop for Small Enterprises in Victoria

Pop-up Britain, who opened a pop-up shop for small businesses to share in Richmond last year, recently opened a second site in Victoria.  It's within the offices of the Department of Communities and Local Government in Victoria, and it's great fun to visit.  Don't be put off by the fact that it's within a government building; it's on the ground floor and they're very friendly.

As with the Richmond shop, businesses change every two weeks.  See the current brands here.  If you'd like to find out about how to be one of the brands in the shop, see details here.

"Every two weeks we bring you six gorgeous British brands, giving a much-needed boost to new UK entrepreneurs, and opening up a new shopping world to consumers.  Pop-in to our Victoria pop-up shop and be happy that every item you purchase will be a shot-in-the-arm to new and emerging British businesses."

When - Ongoing

Where - Department of Communities and Local Government, Eland House, Bressenden Place, London SW1E 5DU
