Square Root Soda & Tongue 'n' Cheek's Weekend Brunch in Hackney

Every Saturday & Sunday The Soda Works, Square Root Soda's cafe in Hackney E8, is opening up for brunch from 10am - 4pm, on the corner of Amhurst Road and Andre Street.  I went last week - see the pics - and it's a good, relaxed and tasty brunch option, with coffee, sodas on tap from Square Root, brunch by Tongue 'n' Cheek, and you can even bring your old vinyl to play on their 1980s music centre.
This is not strictly a pop-up as it's planned to be permanent, and add more days, but I've no problem featuring it because it started as a pop-up, and has the ethos & feel of a pop-up!

"Throughout January, we’ve been working hard on our venue after we opened up for December’s WTF Why Not and we’re finally ready to open our doors again – and THIS TIME IT’S PERMANENT! We’ve made a few changes, with a whole alcove dedicated to retail space where you can pick up bottles to take home with you and other items we use in the café, such as tea from Good & Proper, Pasta imported directly from Italy, specialist fruit used to make our sodas, and even some of our Enamel cups! We’re hoping to add to this selection as the year progresses. We’ve also inherited a beautiful old record deck and a collection of vinyl to play on it and we welcome anyone who wants to bring their own to play.
And because we had such a good time working with them in December, Tongue ‘N Cheek are back in the kitchen serving up amazing pancake brunches, Onsen style eggs (eggs cooked at 64°C which, trust us, are amazing!) and the best BLT you will ever taste! As always, produce is at the forefront of the Tongue ‘N Cheek menu, with meat sourced from Nate at The Butchery, bread from The Little Bread Pedlar and smoked salmon from House of Sverre. The menu promises some delicious pancake toppings with both Italian and Japanese influences, just like the Tongue ‘N Cheek team!
As well as all of this, we’re installing our own extra special soda fountain with taps designed for refillable bottles. THAT’S RIGHT! You could have your very own Square Root Growler bottle and come by to refill it every week with all your regular favourites and special, one-off flavours made just for our venue! It’s the perfect way to enjoy our soda, fresh from us! Bring the bottle back each week and we’ll even give you a discount on your next fill – what could be better than that?!"

The Art of Dining's 'Abigail's Party' Pop-up in Hackney

The Art of Dining, who stage very imaginative pop-up events, returns in March for a five week pop-up (Weds - Sat) recreating the world of...  Abigail's Party.  They will play homage to Mike Leigh's classic 1970s play with food, theatrical happenings, and music (Demis Roussos is sure to be on the playlist).  Channel your inner Beverley, dress to impress, stick the Beaujolais in the fridge, and get your tickets below!

"Starting on 11th March, The Art of Dining is delighted to present Abigail’s Party - a 70s themed, five course pop-up dining experience, combining food, theatre, music and set design. Inspired by legendary director Mike Leigh’s hugely popular play of the same name. Abigail’s Party will see set designer Alice Hodge take you back in time and transform the iconic Rose Lipman Building into a 70s living room; complete with lava lamps, hostess trolleys, shag-pile rugs, loud wallpaper, jazzy sofas, retro drinks cabinets and every shade of beige.
Moro-trained chef Ellen Parr will present food classics from the era, with a twist. Her Abigail’s Party menu includes a take on a prawn cocktail may look like it has come straight from Fanny Craddock’s fridge, but will tingle the taste buds with its subtle, infused Thai flavours. As you toy with a Twiglet while gazing at your companion over a half grapefruit spiked with cheese and pineapple chunks, prepare to re-discover the magic of mousse and the fun of fondue. Although the food may look retro, you can expect bold, zesty flavours and truly innovative cooking from Ellen.
So, shake out that dralon dress with the plunging neckline, slap on the eyeliner and cerise lipstick, press those flares, unbutton your shirt to the navel and head to the Rose Lipman Building (located between Shoreditch and Dalston, just a few minutes’ walk from Haggerston overground station) to be transported back to the 70s. As you trill to the soaring tenor of Demis Roussos (RIP) and other throw-back classics, you will experience some excruciating hosting and a theatrical awkward moment or two in a nod to Leigh’s screenplay; while a good, strong gin and tonic will get you in the mood for the 70s dinner party of your life!"

When - 11th March - 4th April 2015
Wednesday 11th – Saturday 14th March 2015
Wednesday 18th – Saturday 21st March 2015
Wednesday 25th – Saturday 28th March 2015
Wednesday 1st – Saturday 4th April 2015
Time - 7.30pm -11.00pm

Where - The Rose Lipman Building, 43 De Beauvoir Road, Hackney, N1 5SQ

The Golpar Supper Club's Khuzestan Dinner in Fitzrovia

The Golpar Supper Club, at Gitane Restaurant in Great Titchfield Street, holds regular Persian dinners, focussing on cuisine from different parts of the country.  On Saturday 7th March it will be Khuzestan which is located on the southwest of Iran, including the "Ghaliye-Mahi" or fish stew.  Plus, this dinner is BYOB

"In this Supper club, we are paying a visit to the province of Khuzestan which is located on the southwest of Iran, bordering Iraq's Basra Province and the Persian Gulf. As the most ancient Iranian province, Khuzestan is often referred to as the "birthplace of the nation", as this is where the history of the Persian Empire begins.
The name Khuzestan means "The Land of the Khuzi" and refers to the original inhabitants of this province, the "Susian" people (Old Persian "Huza", Middle Persian "Khuzi"). Many Khuzestanis are bilingual, speaking both Persian and Arabic. It is also not uncommon to find people able to speak a variety of indigenous dialects in addition to their own.
Basically, the province of Khuzestan can be divided into two regions, the plains and mountainous regions. The agricultural lands are fertile and mainly in the west of the province, which are irrigated by the Karun, Karkheh and Jarahi rivers. These three large and permanent rivers flow over the entire territory contributing to the fertility of the land. Karun, Iran's largest river, 850 kilometers long, flows into the Persian Gulf through this province. The climate of Khuzestan is generally hot and humid, particularly in the south, while winters are much more pleasant and dry.
The abundance of water and fertility of soil has enabled this region to grow variety of agricultural products such as wheat, barley, sugar canes, palm trees and citrus fruits. Being situated on the southern part of Zagros Mountain and benefiting from abundance of sunshine it makes it the ideal place for growing olives. Seafood is the most important part of Khuzestani cuisine, and the signature dish of the region that we are cooking in this supper club is called "Ghaliye-Mahi" (fish stew) which is prepared by tamarind paste, cilantro, fenugreek and garlic.
Khuzestanis are very well regarded for their hospitality and generosity and we hope we can do them justice by cooking some of their dishes for our lovely guests and to create a warm and welcoming environment."

Apart from the obvious tea-smoked dishes, you can expect to find a clever but subtle use of the essential ingredient, bringing an element of fun and surprise to the evening.
The pop-up restaurant is being held by London company, A taste. run by Australian head chef, Chris Jordan. A taste. sources its ingredients from nearby farmer’s markets and small business. Chris says, “I set up A taste. to give a new twist to traditional British cooking. I make delicious food based around different themes that give the evening a fun, quirky feel.”
Chris also believes that eating should be a shared experience, so his ‘tasting room’ restaurant will have a relaxed atmosphere with food being served at large, communal tables. The 4-course menu offers good value being priced at just £35 per head and will include a welcome cocktail.
Startisans is an indoor food market on Shelton Street in Covent Garden that showcases artisan food producers and street food stalls. Chris Jordan was formerly chef at the acclaimed Flying Fish & restaurant in Sydney.

'Caramel Sweetheart', cauliflower & scallop

Texas Joe's Residency at The Horatia on the Holloway Road

Texas Joe's has popped up at The Horatia in Holloway Road (midway between Highbury & Islington, and Holloway) for his amazing brisket and much more, seven days a week.  If you've never tasted Joe's brisket (he organised a BrisketFest last year) they you're in for a treat - it's good, honest BBQ food - and  don't forget the chicken, pork, and other things on the menu.

"After ending its residency at the Grafton on January 18, Texas Joe’s signature smoked brisket, pork, and chicken dishes have found a new home on Holloway Road. Texas Joe’s previously held other residencies at BrewDog Shepard’s Bush and BrewDog Shoreditch and has also started the overwhelmingly popular Brisket Fest, hosted last fall at Camden Brewery.
The Horatia is excited to offer its patrons this authentically Texan menu, featuring beef brisket, pork shoulder, and hot link sausages platters and sandwiches, hot link chilli dogs, a selection of beef, chicken, and mushroom burgers, topped fries, and even chicken wings – great foods to pair with theHoratia’s wide selection of craft beers! And Sundays will offer a Texas Joe’s take on the classic roast."

(The Horatia stays open for drinks service until 11pm Sunday - Thursday & 2am on Friday and Saturday nights)

Earl's Hoxton Cheesesteak will be popping up at The Proud Archivist on the Canal in N1, from Thursday to Saturday for six days between 26th February and 7th March, for lunch and dinner.  As the picture shows, it's a steak sandwich, but with provolone cheese and lots of other goodies.  Go!

Joe has always been inspired and passionate about street food, so along with his enthusiasm, experience & training as a chef, he has created an East London interpretation of an American icon and cultural obsession for the London street food scene.
Earl's signature dish, the indulgent Hoxton Cheesesteak uses only the best thinly sliced seared bavette steak, sweet confit onion, oozy Provolone cheese which is served in an artisan sub roll with Earl's bun sauce & our very own pickled chillies."

Carousel, the London restaurant which regularly hosts guest chefs, has a treat for us in February and March - ten days of dinners (& 6 of lunches) by Daniela di Grazia, from La Cruz in Italy, in collaboration with Carousel's own Ollie Templeton.  The middle Saturday (28th) has sold out already - don't miss this rare chance to eat Daniela's food in London.

"Sandwiched like a topographical insalata tricolore between a picture postcard lake, a mythical mountain and the Mediterranean Sea, La Cruz has earned a reputation as one of Italy's most spectacular restaurants. The cooking doesn't disappoint either.
Since opening in 2006 head chef and co-owner Daniela has been attracting legions of Roman food lovers to San Felice Circeo with her big-hearted regional home-cooking that combines locally grown produce and pasta fatta a mano with the freshest seafood imaginable - La Cruz is so close to the water the fish have been known to drop in for a quick aperitivo.

Messhead's #FryHard 'We Fry Anything' Easter Pop-up at Boxpark

All photos (c) by Travis Hodges
Advance warning – you’re going to want to be in London over the Easter weekend,  as MessHead (Miss Cakehead and London Mess) are ‘frying tonight’ in their 'Fry Hard' pop-up at Boxpark.  They’ll be frying everything from Crème Eggs, Mars Bars, cheese strings, chocolate cake, crumpets…  (We'll have all been very abstemious over Lent, of course)  Bring your own, or get one from their selection, and they’re even asking for creative suggestions via Facebook.
The event takes place from Thurs 2nd April to Sunday 5th April, with two warm-up events on Columbia Road on Sundays 22nd & 29th March

"Culinary renegades ‘messhead’ (a recently formed partership between Miss Cakehead and London Mess) are offering a totally unique eating experience this Easter, a pop-up venture where every single item on sale will be deep fried. Inspired by the iconic die hard movie this is truly a different Easter event - expect tied up Easter bunnies and blood splattered not pastel coloured eggs.

Opening at BOXPARK in Shoreditch on Thursday 2nd April at 11am – with lots of special offers on Good Fry-Day (Friday 3rd April) - Messhead have selected over 100 different items to deep fry, both sweet & savoury with the menu changing daily. His experiments so far have included deep frying cheese-strings, deep fried buttered crumpet, cheese filled hot cross buns and Tunnock’s Caramel. It’s a given that classics such as crème eggs and other popular confectionary will also included.

All photos (c) by Travis Hodges
On Easter Sunday a fully fried Easter will be offered consisting of a whole fried lamb joint, roast potatoes, rosemary, carrots and sprouts, serving 6 this will need to be booked in advance.

Suggestions can also be made on Twitter to @ldnmesschef and @miss_cakehead."
