Buy some unusual art - or even a bit of the road!  Organised by the High Roller Society.

"This Christmas season East London heads away from the North Pole and goes underground. Set within the Old Shoreditch tube station, SEASON TICKET deliberately spills milk and spins Santa on his bobble head. There’s no need for shiny red noses down here—subversive artists are guiding this sleigh ride to bring girls, boys, and everything in between a creative, art-led alternative to the High Street consumer Xmas madness!
For those who prefer their earthly delights Hieronymus Bosch-style, London’s seedy East End festers once more with a hoard of amusements and occasionally dark festive fayre, including a street art exhibition, installations, Live painting, DIY art stalls, creative cakes from Totally Baked & mulled wine to warm the festive cobbles. Plus film projections and a trans-gender (over 18’s) ‘Sink The Pink’ Bad Santa’s grotty grotto.

Argos Virtual Pop-up Stores in Railway Stations

Argos are taking a leaf out of Ocado's book (& arguably eBay's & Tesco's too), by setting up retail spaces where people can buy things using their phones, using QR codes.

(Update - HMV have done this with bus shelters too)

"British retailer Argos is heading to London railway stations for another innovative out-of-home campaign.
The 750-outlet chain, owned by Home Retail Group, is unusual among major retailers in that it has little stock on display, but instead asks customers to browse a catalogue in-store before placing their orders at a desk, for immediate collection or home delivery. It also sells online.
Now, it is replicating the in-store experience for commuters at Paddington and Waterloo railway stations in London. Temporary booths show a selection from its catalogue; consumers can then point their smartphone at a QR code alongside the product they want, and pick it up from a store later that day."

When - No solid info, but I'm guessing 12th December - 24th December

The Stew House Pop-up Restaurant in Hackney

The Stew House is a new pop-up restaurant from the Dead Dolls Club, aiming to serve hearty warming food at a very reasonable price (£20 per head).  The December dates are now sold out, but it's opening again in January, so don't miss out.

"Our menu will be based around one of the most popular dishes the world has ever seen, good old stew. From the Romans to the Vikings, stew has been a staple for thousands of years and we will be creating 8 of the most popular from around the country. Ranging from to Cowl in Wales to Lancashire hot pot, this is not to be missed.
We are commissioning artists Jennie Webber - web illustrations (www.jenniewebber.com) and Dan Hillier (www.danhillier.com) to create a banqueting room to remember. Based around a huge Tudor Style dining table the space will cross 2D and 3D effortlessly and bring a blank canvas to life like you’ve never seen before."

Secret Cinema's Pop-up Secret Restaurant with St John in a Secret Location

Secret Cinema run cinema experiences.  Clues are given, but you never know for sure what film you'll be getting until you arrive.  The night includes a cast of extras dressed in the style or the spirit of the film, and it makes for an excellent night out.  Now they've teamed up with St John, to launch the Secret Restaurant, which sounds like a similar experience, also in a secret location...

"Today Future Cinema, creators of Secret Cinema, announced the launch of Secret Restaurant, a mysterious new theatrical food experience in partnership with St John, a Michelin Star Restaurant, creating an impromptu restaurant in a Hidden Attic in the location of the upcoming Secret Cinema event.
The Secret Restaurant concept will aim to do for food what Secret Cinema has done for film allowing the audience to be totally immersed into a theatrical world of the film through taste and specially designed secret locations. Inspired by film, music and art; location, theatre and performance will bring this restaurant to life.
Launched on 7thth December and located in a secret central London location, the Secret Restaurant, St John Restaurant (CАИНТ ДЖOH), will accommodate seated dining for 50 guests. The meal will be an all-encompassing dinner priced at £28.50 per person and feature every night during the run of nearly 40 sold-out productions. Pop-up 'Ape Playground' near Tower Bridge - NOW FINISHED

This is a nice idea - shame it's only going to be open for one day.  To celebrate the release of Rise of the Planet of the Apes (ROTPOTA to fans), the film company is opening a pop-up 'Ape Playground' in Potters Fields (scene of David Blaine's Above the Below) today.  People can go along and have a swing on the bars.  No apes will be in attendance.

"As Fox releases the film on Blu-ray and DVD, Potters Field on Dec 12 will become host to an ape playground for humans to explore, based on the primate sanctuary that Ceasar & co. inhabited in the film.
Research released in conjunction with the film says that modern society is keeping people too sedentary and inactive (duh, pass the mince pies!) and that embracing our biological ancestors movements would be healthier.
“There is an ape inside all of us,” says Barry Bogin, Professor of Biological Anthropology of Loughborough University. “We have similar biological bodies as apes but we’re not using them in the way we should.  We are built to swing, move around and be physically active outdoors like apes, but the modern world works against us…Sports and exercises are too structured, increasingly indoors and participants have to wait their turn, when naturally we are just meant to go out and embrace our surroundings, like apes.
MovNat exercise guru Erwan Le Corre will be on hand for demonstrations and Londoners can relieve pre-holiday stress by swinging, climbing, jumping, carrying and balancing."

A 1950s Themed Pop-up Christmas Cinema Night in Hampstead

This sounds like the perfect night for film and nostalgia fans - and a chance to meet 50s actress June Cunningham; it's a great initiative by the Hampstead Film Society.

"The Hampstead Film Society in Belsize Park presents a 1950’s themed Christmas special.  We will be showing a complete 1950’s style cinema programme including original commercials, a Christmas cartoon and the classic Ealing comedy The Smallest Show on Earth .
We also have the immense pleasure of welcoming 50s movie actress June Cunningham who played the glamorous usherette Marlene Hogg.  Following the film there will be a Q&A with June Cunningham who will be answering questions on her work with the legendary Peter Sellers and celebrated director Basil Dearden.  We will also be serving mulled wine and mince pies.
The Smallest Show on Earth is a 1957 British comedy film, directed by Basil Dearden, and starring Bill Travers, Virginia McKenna, Peter Sellers and Margaret Rutherford. The supporting cast included Bernard Miles, Leslie Phillips, Francis de Wolff, George Cross, June Cunningham and Sid James.  The screenplay was written by William Rose and John Eldridge from an original story by William Rose."

Shelf Christmas Pop-up Shop in Shoreditch

Online retailer shelf are holding a pop-up shop in Shoreditch to showcase their eclectic collection of items including art, prints, ornaments, toys and puppets.

"Initially it was a shared love of illustration, pattern and print that led Jewellery Designer Katy Hackney and Costume Designer Jane Petrie to open Shelf in 2001.
Over time, no matter how hard they tried to shape it, Shelf  took on an identity of its own.
Many of the wonderful things they had liked and planned to sell were left by the wayside as the shop decided for itself which goods were to come and go from the shelves.
Collaborations with other artists, hunting trips to foreign lands and vintage finds in the unlikeliest of places have all contributed to the Shelf collection and continue to do so as the shop changes and evolves. Nowadays artists, illustrators and makers often find Shelf before Shelf finds them, it's always a pleasure to have someone visit to show their work and for it to immediately seem right for the collection."

Card Aid Pop-up Christmas Card Shops Around London

This one comes from the heart - if you send Christmas cards, and you want to give to charity at the same time, please buy from Card Aid shops.  Card Aid shops are run by volunteers for the Charities Advisory Trust, and pop-up in the foyers of some churches, community centres and libraries in London, and give a far higher percentage of the cover price to charity than cards bought in major retailers.  There are over 25 locations in London this year.

"Card Aid shops are open from October to December (exact dates vary). With over 30 shops, Card Aid is the largest chain of temporary Christmas card shops in London. There are also several Card Aid shops outside London (Cambridge, Oxford, Guildford, Bromley). See list below for all locations.
Our shops offer an unrivalled range of cards, together with assurance that ALL profits from the cards you are buying are going to charity.
Award winning Peace Oil is also available at our shops; shops stocking Peace Oil are marked with an asterisk below."
