Guest Post - Food Wanted for Pub in Dalston

AK from The Victoria in Dalston has been in touch to put this offer out to readers of the site.  As he explains below, this could be a really good opportunity for someone to get involved in providing food for the pub, either as street-food type snacks on one or more evenings a week, or to use it as a venue for a pop-up restaurant or a supper club.

"I help run The Victoria in Dalston. It's a family run locals venue and we have live music on several nights of the week. In the last few years we've played host to recent Mercury Winners Alt J, Scritti Politti, Wolf Alice and UK Soul Legend Omar among many others.

In terms of food The Victoria has long been renowned for it's African cuisine but recent changes in the Dalston's demographic has meant this food is not as profitable as it once was and recognizing this trend I'm really keen to offer something different to our newer customers (light bites, snacks, smaller and cheaper meals that can be purchased during a gig with quick turnover), something quite similar to what Lucky Chip are doing or what Rita's offers to Birthdays on Kingsland Road.

The kitchen is fully functioning with a large fan assisted gas oven, microwaves, fridge/freezers, preparation and work areas and storage space for utensils.

As a pub we currently do not open in the afternoon as we no longer have those older customers who might pop in for a pint earlier and equally we do not do coffee- which might attract a more eclectic audience.

We open from 6pm-12pm Sunday to Thursday and 6pm-2am Friday to Saturday- a similar time scheme to most venues in the area.

I'm keen to offer it up to people on a short or long term basis."

Diesel Village Pop-up Store and Event Space in Regent Street

Diesel have just opened Diesel Village at 229- 247 Regent Street (formerly Karen Millen), to serve as both a store and a space for exhibitions, live performances and more.

"London's global significance as a fashion hub is demonstrated by a myriad of factors, and retail is definitely one of them. The British capital is a nucleus of leading boutiques and flagship stores that's matched by very few cities on the planet. it's no wonder that brands see London as an ideal platform to flex their creative muscle and show what they've got. and that's exactly what Italian apparel brand diesel have done by taking the pop-up retail formula to the next level and launch a pop-up concept store there.
Dubbed Diesel Village, it's located in a building that housed the former burberry flagship store, and measures a spacious 5,000 sq.ft. [465 sqm.] spread over two floors. the store is conceptualized with the Diesel community in mind, and as such it's very much an interactive retail space that adventurously takes cues from the brand's for succesful living motto, featuring a series of designated spaces for male and female shoppers that aim to engage their own creativity. These sections are each represented by differently designed greenhouse structures, curated in collaboration with Brinkworth and Wilson Brothers. To ensure a continuing buzz, creatives from the worlds of music, fashion and art will be invited to take over the space, with the brief to fire up the diesel community.
So, what's on the shelves of Diesel Village? quite a lot, actually. there's a selection of the most premium Diesel men's and women's apparel and accessories from the s/s 2013 mainline collections, in addition footwear, fragrances and even motorbikes. and to keep shoppers on their toes, a series of special showcases of key design concepts are scheduled, including diesel black gold and the eagerly anticipated edun x diesel denim collaboration. the Diesel Village pop-up concept store will be operational though April of next year."

Craft Beer Rising 2013 Festival off Brick Lane

The last Friday & Saturday in February will see The Old Truman Brewery again be a centre for beer, with 40 craft beer breweries all providing beer for this special event, with food, comedy, DJs and live music.

"Imagine a blustery February weekend, and all you want is your friends and favourite ents in one place.  That is exactly what the Craft Beer Rising festival www.craftbeerrising.co.uk will be staging: craft beer, music and street food all together at the atmospheric Old Truman Brewery in East London.  This new event takes place on Friday 22 and Saturday 23 February across two evenings and one daytime session.  It is very different from typical big beer events and has the ambience of an intimate music festival, plus wholesome eating from award-winning Brockley Market's top street food vendors www.brockleymarket.com.  At the heart of it is craft beer made by the nation's brewers, and there will be tastings from some 40 plus breweries, reflecting both established and experimental British brewing.  Then there is music added to the mix, with acclaimed DJ Norman Jay MBE headlining, alongside mellow acoustic sets.  The vibrant, uplifting, fresh space is designed with an easy, comfortable industrial look and several rooms will feature different attractions and moods.  Learn a thing or two from a curious Beer Lab created by Heriot-Watt University, renowned for its International Centre for Brewing and Distilling.  'Thinking Drinkers' Ben McFarland and Tom Sandham will have you in their grips with an all-new version of their sold out review from the Edinburgh Fringe and Soho Theatre, so be assured of sips, laughs and intellectual contemplation."

Conquer's Wardrobe Pop-up Shop in Sydenham

Photo - Sebastian Stobbs

Conquer's Wardrobe is an ethical fashion and art pop up shop in Sydenham and is part of the SEE3 Shop Revolution, part of the Portas Pilot Project.

"Ethical fashion and art collective Conquer Gear have created a special Pop Up shop featuring a capsule collection of clothing, an exclusive photographic exhibition and curated range of crafts in Sydenham, running until Christmas Eve. Local residents and Londoners are fast spreading the news, with John Malkovich becoming a recent fan and an editorial magazine feature on ethical fashion coming up early next year.
Conquer Gear is a diverse collective of artists and imaginers fronted by Sebastian Stobbs and Tomoya Hiramatsu creating a wide range of innovative and provocative design across different mediums – everything relating to the printed image and written word – fashion, film, photography, art. The company has a strict ethical policy supporting the Environmental Justice Foundation’s Clean Cotton Campaign and all cotton fabrics are clearly labelled with country of origin.
Conquer are hosting regular Friday evening events and activities until 9pm throughout the Pop Up period. On the day of the launch, Saturday December 1st, Sebastian Stobbs was amazed by the response and said: “It was over in a second, everyone coming into the shop had enormous enthusiasm for what was trying to be achieved in their community. We didn't stop chatting with people all day long. It was just so nice to see how many people had come out to join in.”
A lot of preparation went into getting the space ready and also wardrobes to find for the clothes! Sebastian also added: “Everyone I knew that came to visit said ‘I knew it was a shop space, but I didn't think it would look this good, I'm very proud’ with such a small amount of time it was lovely to hear it was all worth the effort."
Before the launch Sebastian said: “Conquer are very excited to be part of the SEE3 Community Project. There is a real buzz around Forest Hill, Sydenham and Kirkdale with all the regeneration that is happening. It is made possible by enthusiastic local residents that have made us feel welcome before we have fully moved in. We are looking forward to being part of the community and adding some fun and creativity to the local high streets.”
Conquer’s Wardrobe was launched through The Shop Revolution, a high impact project that aims to bring empty units back into use and interest to the high street through the introduction of pop up shops. This project is one of three strands of the South London SEE3 Portas Pilot Project."

The Pen & Gravy vs Modernish Pop-up Homeware and Design Shop in Sydenham

Pen and Gravy vs Modernish is a pop-up homeware and design shop in Sydenham and is part of the SEE3 Shop Revolution, part of the Portas Pilot Project.
Update - it's now popping up for a further few weeks, following the success of the pre-Christmas run.

"London Pop Up homeware and design collaboration Pen & Gravy vs Modernish launched on Saturday 1st December to an overwhelming public response, also featuring in the Evening Standard Home & Property magazine’s Top 5 December events. The Pop Up shop is due to run until Christmas Eve, although discussions are underway to possibly extend this. More details to come.
Pen & Gravy is the vision of local self-taught artist Jamie Palmer who brings his original and highly intricate, colourful patterned one-off designs on a range of lampshades and ceramics to Kirkdale in South London.
The other half of the duo is Dan Thomas of Modernish – a UK based company which specialises in a curated range of mid-century British and Scandinavian designs in posters, ceramics, paper goods, books and furniture. Also being displayed is a celebration of iconic South London landmarks on prints from local artists.
Throughout the rest of December, Jamie and Dan will show you how to customise your own lampshade, plate or create your own original Christmas decorations through workshops and will host a series of special evening events.
A special feature of the Pop Up shop is the community art wall which people are invited to contribute their own self portrait doodles to win something special. Anyone who participates will be entered into a random prize draw which will take place on the afternoon of Dec 23rd. There will be mulled wine and mince pies on the day.
On launch day the pair were overwhelmed with the amazing response they received from the public. Speaking about the run up to the launch, Jamie and Dan said: "We were massively excited but quite nervous as didn't feel quite ready to open our doors to the public.” After the launch day they spoke about the things that stood out for them: “Meeting all the lovely people that came into the shop, seeing how much fun everyone was having doodling onto our self-portrait wall.”
Pen & Gravy vs Modernish collaboration was launched through The Shop Revolution, a high impact project that aims to bring empty units back into use and interest to the high street through the introduction of pop up shops. The Butchery Pop-up Shop in Forest Hill

The Butchery (it is a butchery, not some clever name for another type of shop) is a December pop-up in Forest Hill and is part of the SEE3 Shop Revolution, part of the Portas Pilot Project.

"The Butchery Ltd, a new Pop Up Butcher’s Shop in Forest Hill has become an instant hit with locals and Londoners. Local residents and business owners Nathan Mills and Ruth Siwinska set up the Pop Up Shop on Saturday 1st December and will be there until Christmas Eve.
The figures for the first weekend are astounding: an estimated 2000 people appeared through their doors with 392 paying customers on the FIRST day! Many customers returned throughout the following week, as much as 3-4 times with many asking Ruth and Nathan if they're going to become a permanent fixture there. It is looking very probable that they are going to stay. More details to come.
The couple source the best meat they can find, dry age it themselves in Bermondsey and cut from whole carcasses so there is always different cuts for different budgets. They are stocking a small but special range of meat from native bred animals raised naturally on small English farms. The seasonal Christmas range includes: free-range turkeys, ducks, cockerels and geese, as well as beef, pork and lamb roasts. They make their own tasty stuffings, stock and pigs in blankets, and goose fat for the best-tasting roast potatoes, as well as gammon, ham, chutneys and pork pies.
Nathan and Ruth say: “We love the meat we stock, we love to cook, and we love to talk! if people want something special, or something cheap to cook quickly in the week, we have heaps of ideas to get the best out of different cuts. It’s cool to be able to show people something new – and really cool when we get great cooking tips from our customers, too.”
Their tips and techniques have been spreading far and wide, coming to the attention recently of Raymond Blanc (one of their favourite chefs) and will feature in his TV series to be broadcast next year on slow cooking.
Franklins of East Dulwich will be collaborating with The Butchery to provide fresh fruit and vegetables throughout December.
The Butchery Ltd was launched through The Shop Revolution, a high impact project that aims to bring empty units back into use and interest to the high street through the introduction of pop up shops. This project is one of three strands of the South London SEE3 Portas Pilot Project."

Pop-up Screens Presents Cinema in the Snow in Spitalfields

Pop-up Screens are bringing a very special set of screenings to the Dray Walk Gallery at the Old Truman Brewery - Cinema in the Snow, complete with a snow filled grotto, a 'wardrobe' door, and lots of snow, plus suitably seasonal refreshments.

"Stuck for Christmas party ideas? Looking for something different to entertain the kids during the Christmas holidays? Or just simply love festive films? Pop Up Screens could have the answer as it transforms into The Cinema In The Snow.
Back after a sold out Summer the outdoor film specialist will be moving into the warm for one week as it transforms The Dray Walk Gallery at the Old Truman Brewery on Brick Lane into a snow filled grotto, complete with a door posing as a wardrobe, Christmas trees, mulled wine, beer, pimped Moretto hot chocolate and of course lots of real (fake) snow.
Kicking off on Tuesday 18th December until 23rd September the schedule will include
The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Muppets Christmas Carol, Elf and Gremlins. There will be up to 3 screenings per day – 1pm, 5pm and 7.45pm - making it perfect for not only meeting up with friends but as an activity for a kids day out or office Christmas party.
Doors will open 1 hour before the screening making sure people get the chance to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the festive treats on offer.
Founder of Pop Up Screens, David Leydon said; “Christmas is awesome.  It’s a fact and I desperately wanted Pop Up Screens to be involved in something Christmassy in London, so we got our thinking caps on and came up with what we thought was a good idea.  We tested the water a little bit and it turns out that what we thought was a good idea, lots of other people also thought it was a good idea.  So we set about turning this idea into reality and a snow machine and a wardrobe later and we’re well on our way.  It’s genuinely exciting to think we’re going to turn a concrete cube into a snow filled cinema, which you can only get into if you walk through a magical wardrobe.  I honestly can’t wait until we open our doors and start our Christmas stint as The Cinema in the Snow.”"

Art of Life Pop-up Street Art Gallery in Shoreditch

Art of Life, a group of Dutch pot orchid growers, has put together an exhibition of orchid inspired art to raise awareness about the versatility of the plant.  The exhibition will last for just over ten days, and feature a free orchid give-away on Friday 21st

"The photo realistic exhibition will be available to view on the exterior walls of the Village Underground, Shoreditch, East London from Wednesday 12th to Sunday 23rd December 2012 and on Friday 21st December we will be giving away Orchids at the site to share the Christmas spirit!
The exhibition will comprise of a collection of four pieces of original artwork by graffiti collective 'Graffiti Kings' featuring "breakthrough" style art, whereby each piece will look as if it has been punched through the wall to expose the inside of the building; to reveal a series of windows into a Christmas home scene dressed with an array of pot orchids.
'Graffiti Kings' are one of London’s most well-known urban street art groups. Pioneers of the London Graffiti scene, the collective now have an international following thanks to their unique fusion of individual styles and efforts to promote graffiti as a form of fine art, moving away from its past connections with vandalism.
The street orchid exhibition forms part of an on-going awareness campaign by Art of Life, who believe that the 25,000 species of orchid are all unique and pieces of art in their own right, with their diverse shapes, colours and patterns.  As part of the exhibition, the passing spectators will be given the opportunity to win a luxury weekend in Amsterdam, a visit to a Dutch orchid grower."

When - 12th - 23rd December 2012

London Loves LA Pop-up Shop at Boxpark

A few weeks ago I wrote about WeArePopups's competition to win your own retail unit at Boxpark.  Now the judges have decided , and the winners have announced...  It's London Loves LA

"Created by two sisters who spend time between London and LA, London Loves LA is a bespoke online boutique dedicated to delivering hand-picked, high quality American vintage and 90s thrift directly from LA to the UK.
London Loves LA is fun and exciting, girlie yet grungy, feminine yet boyish - adult teenagers living for nostalgia in the form of photos, scrapbooks, memories, first loves, Harleys, music, friends, stickers and grunge.
From tie-dye to denim to stonewash to much loved worn tees, LOLA incorporates friendship, fun, sisterhood, the 90s, Americana, fashion, music, and festivals in to their everyday mantra. The LOLA sisters place as much importance on the journey of the clothes as the products themselves. London Loves LA has a nostalgic road trip feel wrapped up in teenage excitement and best friendship.
We are super grateful to WeArePopup for running the competition! It's such a good idea and they are a really great team. We had been looking for a longer term pop up space for a while and this came along at the perfect time.  The process was really fascinating and really made us focus on our brand message and marketing ideas as being key to the next couple of months! We're so excited to be at Boxpark and can't wait to see what happens next...."

Christmas Caramel Pop-up in Bethnal Green

Sorry - Cancelled!

Two friends, Rebecca and Tessa, are holding a one day sale of home made caramel just round the corner from the Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green.  You can also win a prize by guessing the secret flavour!

"This December, we've got our thermometers out and we can see that things are getting pretty hot on the Sugar Loaf Walk.
We're cooking caramels better than Walter White cooks crack.
Our caramels taste so good, they probably are criminal - but we promise they'll look much prettier than your average mug shot.
Our caramels are perfect for Christmas gifts, they keep for ages, so you don't have to eat them all at once - but if you don't someone else definitely will.
Expect experimental flavours along side some firm favourites.
And if you fancy yourself as a bit of a super taster with a palette to rival Heston's you should come and play guess the secret flavour!
Prizes to be won!
Sounds pretty good right.
So come on down to Sugar Loaf Walk, on Sunday the 16th of December and buy some delicious buttery caramels!"

Fifteen & KERB's Foodie Christmas Market near Old Street

Jamie Oliver has teamed up with streetfood specialists KERB to host a streetfood party outside his restaurant Fifteen this Saturday 15th December.  You might remember that Fifteen were banner sponsors of Fifteen Street, the British Streetfood Awards in the summer.  Note that they'll also be collecting for charity on the day, so please bring a small gift with you on the day to give to the local community.

"We're all counting down the days until Christmas, but now there's another super-exciting date to put in the diary! Start Christmas early by wrapping up in your woolly scarf and bobble hat and heading down to Fifteen for a heartwarming Christmas market on Saturday 15 December from 11am-5pm.
To help us get in the festive spirit we've teamed up with the fabulous KERB, whose mission is to normalise great food by getting it out onto Britain’s streets. In among the tinsel and fairy lights will be some of London’s best street food vendors, all dishing up delicious treats. Stalls already confirmed include the Rib Man and his legendary rib sandwiches, Bell & Brisket who champion all things salt beef, the Pizza Pilgrims and their authentic pizzas with attitude, and Poppy Smadja and her wickedly indulgent tarts. Also joining us will be Green Goat, a 1995 school bus converted into an awesome British food-specialising machine, breakfast specialists Original Fryup Material, Rib Man (widely viewed as having the best ribs in London), Luardos and their festival-famous Mexian grub sold straight from their gorgeous vans, Dosa Deli, Angus, Kimchi Cult and their mouth-watering Korean-style fast food, and Southern-style street food specialists Anna Mae’s.
Once you've filled your bellies there will still be lots to do. We’ve invited down a carefully selected bunch of incredible producers, so you can pick up those last-minute foodie pressies and do a one-stop foodie shop for Christmas goodies. Stalls will include renowned smokehouse Hansen & Lydersen, who will join salumi kings Picco Salumi and Eat My Pies, who make delicious pies, stuffed with love (and other things, of course). Alongside these, we’ll be joined by Hackney’s famous Vadasz Deli, the ever-fancy Meringue Girls, and Violet. Once all the shopping’s done, you’ll be able to sip mulled wine and hot chocolate while enjoying some festive classics from local choirs.
Of course, Christmas is a time for giving, so we’re also asking everyone who comes along to the market to bring with them a small gift, food or otherwise, which will be given to poorer families in the local community to help them have a happy Christmas."

When - Saturday 15th December, 11am - 5pm
