Canto 73's Weekly Supper Clubs at Fantail in Islington

Canto 73- led by chef Chef João Ferreira Pinto - runs regular supper clubs every Friday and Saturday night at Fantail, the coffee shop at 274B St. Paul’s Road, Islington (nearest tube - Highbury & Islington).  The supper clubs feature seven courses, wth seasonal ingredients from independent producers, and great wine available for pairing.

We started supper clubs in the summer of 2021, wanting to create a sustainable, gentle way to host dinners during the pandemic. We ended up really enjoying this slower-paced, shared dining experience so decided to make them a regular occurrence.

Every Friday and Saturday at 19:30 we host a casual evening of seven seasonal plates with a little explanation of each dish by the Chef. We are really passionate about seasonal, sustainable ways of eating and work as locally as possible, including lots of independent businesses in Islington, or with very small production purveyors.

Our menus are created from years of experience in Michelin restaurants, but wanting to take the fussiness and higher price away to create incredibly delicious food that can be enjoyed in a casual, unintimidating environment.

We also offer a wine pairing from our suppliers at Graft Wine which we highly recommend to get the most out of the evening.

When - Friday and Saturday evenings at 7.30pm

Where - Fantail,  274B St. Paul’s Road, N1 2LJ

Reservations - £50 from Canto 73 here

Richard Foster at Forest Wines in E17

Pics by Chris Coulson - https://www.instagram.com/cwiss/

Richard Foster, formerly the executive chef of Chiltern Firehouse, is currently cooking Weds-Fri evenings at Forest Wines, the wine shop and bar in E17.

Pics by Chris Coulson - https://www.instagram.com/cwiss/

It's a fantastic pop-up, with excellent food in a really memorable space.  Richard cooks behind the counter of the shop, using a hot box and a built-in cooker, and is able to cook for the 16 or so guests this way with aplomb.

Pics by Chris Coulson - https://www.instagram.com/cwiss/

He has been doing these nights since November, cooking on a small charcoal grill within the wine store, and turning out the most amazing steaks, langoustines and more.  It’s literally the sort of thing that I started LondonPopUps to write about back in 2011, and it’s great to see such quality dining in the relatively unlikely setting of a wine shop in E17.When - Wednesday to Friday evenings til 2nd February 2024

When - Weds-Fri evenings until the start of Feb 2024 - Sittings at 6pm and 8pm

Where - Forest Wines, 149 Forest Rd, London E17 6HE

They have been very imaginative in the selection, and these offer a great opportunity to try some new food - with two of the nights having plant-based menus - and catch some up and coming musical talent, in a small, intimate space.

Each night will have a dinner cooked by a local, independent chef, with two musicians performing afterwards.  The four nights are:

Saturday 6th January at Kentish Town Stores in NW5

The Fengzhen Supper Club in Crystal Palace

The Fengzhen Supper Club is run by Jay, with help from his partner Chris, out of their home in Crystal Palace.  The supper club feeds up to 12 people around a big dining table about twice a month.  The cuisine is mostly Chinese - Jay is from mainland China - but with other influences creeping in.  When I attended the menu had a lot of Vietnamese influences.

The one I went to was on a Sunday lunchtime, with several courses spreading over about 3 hours.  Guests are welcomed into the home with a drink, introduced to each other, and then seated a few minutes later.  Jay also hosts some on evenings - check out his Instagram for future dates and booking links.

It all made for a very entertaining and delicious afternoon.  Jay is a great cook and host, and the food, on big serving plates, is both full of flavour, but also very substantial and filling.

When - Twice a month, on different days (Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays)

Where - Jay's home in Crystal Palace

Booking - see links in Jay's instagram

Joy in Marylebone - A Pop-up Cafe, Plant Shop, and Weekly Supper Club

Joy, Stevie Parle's pop-up restaurant at Portobello Dock has now moved to 94 Marylebone High Street, W1U 4RG, as a cafe, plant shop, and home to a weekly supper club.  I visited earlier this week and found a large space with a high-ceiling, and I'm told that the weekly Thursday night supper clubs will start in mid September.  PS - try the chocolate cake from the cafe - it's divine!

"JOY, the Pandemic pop-up restaurant, farm shop-grocery store, plant shop, some time Jazz club and occasional wontoneria opened in July 2020 by Tom Dixon and Stevie Parle is no longer at Portobello Dock. We are are on a constant search for an engaging and exciting permanent location we need to continue to to bring JOY.

For now, we have a little home at 94 Marylebone High St, where we sell beautiful house plants, cook a tiny menu each day using the super-fresh Kent garden produce we’re known for. Once a week Stevie and Vincenzo cook a dinner in the shop for around 30 people."
