Joo at Bun House in Chinatown - Korean & European-inspired Sharing Dishes

This August & September 2021 Chef Joo Won will be taking over the top floor of Bun House at 26-27 Lisle Street, Chinatown for a menu of Korean and European inspired sharing dishes, serving Tuesdays to Sundays.  Joo will be partnering with his wife, Sujin, a pastry chef, and dishes to expect include  Joo’s signature “JFC” - Joo’s Fried Chicken, and 3 day marinated flatiron beef bulgogi.

This one is going to be very popular!

"Fresh from a recent sell-out residency at Carousel, Bun House will welcome chef Joo Won for a 2 month pop-up, taking over the top floor to serve his signature  menu of South Korean and European inspired sharing dishes. Joo will be accompanied in the kitchen by his wife Sujin, herself a renowned pastry chef with experience at The Wolseley and The Delaunay.

The pair will be serving a selection of sharing dishes including thinly sliced, lightly cured grey mullet served in a sesame, chilli and plum soy sauce and their take on an Italian classic, a kimchi and cheddar risotto topped with poached egg and seaweed crisp. Joo’s signature “JFC” - Joo’s Fried Chicken - will also make an appearance on the menu with succulent chicken thighs, deep fried in a secret batter, accompanied with a gochujang, ginger, honey and apple and topped with creamy cashews and coriander. A 3 day marinated flatiron beef bulgogi, served with aromatic holy basil, spring onion, crunchy chicory and pickled mooli will offer the perfect twist on a traditional Korean Saam (“meaning wrapped”) whilst claypots of slow cooked lamb breast Jjim served in a pear and soy sauce with steamed vegetables, rice, seasoned cucumber and goji berries is a hearty, comforting take on a classic British stew.

For those with a sweet tooth, desserts of raspberry, peach and cream pavlovas will sit alongside a dark chocolate cremeaux with yuza marmalade, hoji tea and toasted grain cream."

John Javier x Fin & Flounder's Spring 2021 Streetfood Stall in Broadway Market

Chef John Javier (Noma, Pachamama East) has partnered with Fin & Flounder in Broadway Market, and is cooking at a gazebo outside their seafood shop on Thursdays to Sundays, 11am-5pm, until Sunday 16th May 2021.

The menu is a mix of things from the grill (for example a burger made with prawn & monkfish), as well as cold fresh fish dishes like the fish tartare (in pic above), a mix of salmon and wild sea bass, artfully served in a truffle crisp bag.

I visited recently and loved the creativity and the quality.  Tip - go early - I got there about 2 hours after opening and the lobster rolls had already sold out.

When - Thursday - Sunday, 11am-5pm - until Sunday 16th May 2021

pic from https://www.instagram.com/kitycow_hush/
KityCow, who appeared on the BBC TV show My Million Pound Menu as XXVI, will be popping up at Hush in Mayfair, serving their Nepalese cuisine for three months from 1st February 2019.  Chefs Joe Allen and Aaron Thomas impressed the 'Dragons' with their cooking, and are being mentored for this pop-up by Michelin star chef Atul Kochhar who was part of the programme.  They will be serving Tuesdays to Saturdays - let's see what this pop-up can lead to!

Persisting in their pop-up dreams under the new name ‘KityCow’ they wowed Hush owner Jamie Barber and Michelin star chef Atul Kochhar to secure a three-month residency at Hush with mentorship from Atul.

"You Me At Six teamed up with vegan fast-food business Temple Of Seitan to host a one-off vegan pop-up restaurant event to celebrate the release of their brand new album.
The vegan kebab pop-up will open its doors at 6pm at Temple Goods Cafe in Hackney Downs Studios and will offer a special ‘VI’-themed menu, which will also include ‘VI’-themed cocktails.
The band announced: “To celebrate the release of ‘VI’ we’re having a party in London. Our friends @templeofseitan are putting together a special YMAS vegan menu and YMAS cocktails. Come down, it’s free! 18+ only. (sic)”
Not only will there be plenty of tasty food to tuck into, there will also be an acoustic set from the band at 7pm, followed by DJ sets into the evening.
Fans of both the band and vegan kebabs can show up to this one-night only event where they will be able to meet You Me At Six, buy the album, get exclusive merch and, of course, sample the You Me At Shish menu."

The Chefs Across Continents Supperclubs in Bethnal Green

Four top supper club chefs, Natalie Griffith, Carine Ottou, Dare Oni, and Roni Bandong, will be hosting a joint event, featuring eight courses (two from each) on Thursday 16th and Friday 17th March 2017, at The Pillbox Kitchen in Bethnal Green.  With cuisines covering Armenia, Cameroon, France, Nigeria and The Philippines, it's going to be an amazing spread, and one you need to go to!

"Natalie Griffith, Carine Ottou, Dare Oni, and Roni Bandong are four women on a mission: to introduce the people of Great Britain to a whole new world of food – one country at a time.
The four met while filming the Channel Four programme 'Kirstie’s Handmade Christmas 2016', which was celebrating cooks who do something a little different at Christmas. Each cooked a Christmas dish from a different country, with the aim of inspiring people who want an alternative to the traditional British approach to Christmas food. In the end, it was the chefs themselves who were inspired and they have decided to celebrate this culinary diversity by organising an event which will help you travel the world through food.
Designed around an 8 course tasting menu, you will be taken on a gastronomic journey around the globe, each dish introducing new and delightful ingredients, flavour combinations and techniques. The chefs are cooking their food from 3 different continents: Natalie from Armenia and Iran, Carine from Cameroon and France, Dare from Nigeria and Roni from The Philippines. This will be an immersive introduction to the traditions of each country that you will never forget!"

Clerkenwell Boy & Bone Daddies' #BoozyWeekendRamen in Old Street

Instagram superstar Clerkenwell Boy has collaborated with Bone Daddies to create a specially formulated photogenic boozy breakfast, including a bowl of ramen - #boozyweekendramen and a DIY Belvedere Vodka Bloody Mary on the side.  It's available for four weekends, from 24th September to 16th October, at Bone Daddies now restaurant at The Bower in Old Street, and only for the first fifty customers each day (just to ramp up the #FOMO...).  Don't miss it!

"What happens when you put the chef responsible for changing the way Londoners eat Japanese cuisine and the city’s most influential food instagrammer in the kitchen together to create a dish? The capital gets a limited edition, boozy, breakfast-inspired ramen designed by Chef Proprietor of Bone Daddies, Ross Shonhan, and Instagram sensation, Clerkenwell Boy, set to launch on 24th September and run for four weekends at the popular rock ‘n’ roll ramen bar’s Old Street outpost.
Drawing inspiration from the upcoming launch of Bone Daddies’ first cookbook and Clerkenwell Boy’s unending love for a boozy weekend brunch, the ramen designed by the pair, to be named #BoozyWeekendRamen, taps into exactly how Londoners like to eat. Featuring the Bone Daddies essentials of flavour-packed chicken bone broth as the base, Tokyo wavy noodles, and a topping of grilled pork belly chashu with oozing Clarence Court eggs, #BoozyWeekendRamen will take the form of a unique cheese ramen in a nod to the instagrammer’s fondness for the good stuff.
Created by whisking parmesan and egg yolks into the broth, it will boast an indulgent and cheesy sauce, complemented by the generous portion of grated Quickes cheddar piled on top.Other innovative touches will include a drizzling of a pesto given the Bone Daddies treatment with the inclusion of mizuna, a Japanese leaf with a subtle pepper flavour that works perfectly with the homemade chilli oil also included in the dish. For added brunch vibes, the dish will be served alongside a DIY kimchi Bloody Mary created in partnership with Belvedere Vodka and served in a glass dipped in maple syrup and a crispy bacon crumb to create a sweet and salty garnish.A blend of roasted cherry tomato with Worcester, tomato, and Sriracha sauces, the duo’s take on the classic cocktail also features some decidedly Japanese influences, with the addition of soy sauce and shiso leaf.  Using the miniature bottle of Belvedere served over ice in a traditional masu box on the side, guests will be able to create their Bloody mary to taste, adding as much.

Forza Win's One Month Collaboration with Pizza Pilgrims in Peckham

Back in 2012 Forza Win started as a rooftop pizza pop-up with the Pizza Pilgrims - see my original post here.  Four years on both are going from strength to strength, and to celebrate the anniversary they're 'getting the band back together' for one month of pizzas (+ starters and desserts) at Forza Win in Peckham.  Expect delicious antipasti, fantastic pizzas with fine toppings, and awesome desserts.  It's open from 31st March to 30th April, Thursday to Sunday, with two evening sittings (2 lunch sittings on Sunday).  Can't wait!

"Remember when we first started this thing? It was Bash (Forza Win) James (Pizza Pilgrim) and Thom (other Pizza Pilgrim) and Archie (Forza Win) and numerous patient friends helping.
We lifted loads of bricks up seven flights of stairs, built a pizza oven on the roof with Terry the oven expert  and started asking to people to come eat with us. Fast forward four years and between the two companies, there's a fair few restaurants, pop ups, events and all sorts of other 'grown up' stuff.
Later this year, Forza Win will be opening a second restaurant, and before we do, we wanted to have one last blast with our pals the Pizza Pilgrims.
SO, for the month of April (well, beginnning 31st March) we'll be doing something of a 'throwback' to the original Forza. Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday you'll be able to come and eat Londons best pizza, with toppings from our favourite Forza Win seasons, bookended by delicious antipasti and desserts to knock your socks off. Same price as the one in 2012, same format, and same awesome times."

When - 31st March - 30th April 2016
Thursday & Friday: EARLY 7:00 - 9:00pm LATE 9:30 - 11:30pm

This Easter Weekend - Thursday 24th - Monday 28th March - Yard Sale Pizza are collaborating with White Men Can't Jerk for a special one-off pizza to be sold from their shop at 105 Lower Clapton Road.  The 'Just Jerkin' pizza will have WMCJ's BBQ Jerk Chicken, Jerk Gravy base, and much more and comes in a 12" and 18" size.  Definitely one to try!

"Yard Sale Pizza is back for another one of it’s unmissable ‘Love In’s’, collaborating with east London’s jerk chicken aficionados, White Men Can’t Jerk, for a one-off jerk pizza. Following the success of previous pizza specials, the Burns Night haggis pizza with Deeney’s and the 1st birthday pastrami calzone with Monty’s Deli, the ‘Just Jerkin’ will be served from Thursday 24th March through to Bank Holiday Monday 28th March.
Known for popping up at party pubs, festival food quarters and the London Jerk Cook Off, White Men Can’t Jerk share a passion for bold flavour combinations, making them ripe for a ‘Love In’ around the Yard Sale Pizza oven.
So... you might want a dribble bib for this bit...Thin slices of WMCJ’s signature smokey BBQ jerk chicken are laid out on a jerk gravy base (mixed with a little of Yard Sale’s slow cooked tomato sauce), fior di latte mozzarella, callaloo leaf, and pineapple scotch bonnet jam. The pizza will be served with optional WMCJ house pickled scotch bonnet peppers for those who want to turn it up a notch!
Having picked up the Time Out Love London Award for Best Hackney restaurant in 2015, Yard Sale continue to win over pizza fans with their distinct handmade stone baked pizzas made from double fermented dough for mature bubbly crusts, and high quality ingredients that are made up in both 12” and super size 18” for sharing (or not).
