Grub Club's 'Bring Your Own' Christmas Day Pop-up in Shoreditch

This is a wonderful idea.  Sid and Liv, who run Grub Club, have teamed up with Uber and airbnb, to create a pop-up lunch on Christmas Day for people stuck 'Home Alone' in London without their families.  You can bring your own dish and share with others (for a £5 fee to charity), or get fed by the organisers for £25.  Great idea!

"Faced with a MaCaulay Culkin style Christmas? Forget being Home Alone! Come and join the Grub Club team and share your Christmas with us!
Our Scientific team here at Grub Club have been working hard in the lab alongside Uber and Airbnb’s teams to devise the ultimate Christmas boonanza. After many months of gastronomic and festive experiments, we heard a cry... Eureka! We’d found it!
Come along and experience a truly unique and charming way to pass your Christmas! If you’re Home Alone and all you have is a packet Mac n’ Cheese to offer then don’t fret - you can chip in and we'll feed you instead.
Any Christmas traditions you want to bring along will be greatly welcomed, but soggy sprouts and Cliff Richard are strictly banned!
This is a perfect opportunity to get stuck into some good grub, pull a cracker with some lovely new people and generally share in some festive fun.
To add to the warm fuzzy feeling you’ll get from sharing your Christmas (and a belly full of food and bubbly), all of the money you spend will be going to the National Charity for Homeless People - Crisis - now doesn’t that put the icing on the top of Christmas cake!
Book now for only £25! Or you can even bring some of your own culinary repertoire to share and get involved for only £5!"

Badoit's Free Picnic Lunch in Soho Square

French water company Badoit are hosting a free picnic with Michelin starred chef Thierry Marx on Thurs 13th in Soho Square.  It's free - but you need to book by emailing BadoitExpress@HavasWW.com mentioning party size, and your name and phone number.  Plus there will be places for people who walk up on the day.  It follows a similar event last year on Eurostar - see video above.

"Who said there is no such thing as a free lunch? BADOIT, the sparkling mineral water, is hosting the BADOIT EXPRESS – the world’s first picnic restaurant - serving gourmet food created by Michelin star chef Thierry Marx, free of charge.
The sparkling experience will open at 12.30pm in Soho Square on Thursday 13th June. There are just 100 picnic places available and hungry diners can express their interest by emailing details of their party to BadoitExpress@HavasWW.com.There will also be a small number of places available on the day and diners should get to Soho Square early to avoid disappointment.
Central to the picnic will be the menu created by Thierry Marx, owner of the Sur Mesure par Thierry Marx restaurant in Paris, which holds two Michelin stars. The look and feel of the picnic has been designed by Fred Sirieix, general manager of the Michelin-starred Galvin at Windows restaurant and co-presenter of the BBC’s Michel Roux’s Service.
Thierry’s menu adds a twist of gastronomic excellence to the classic British packed lunch. Marx said: “BADOIT is a naturally sparkling, effortlessly convivial accompaniment to fine food, and it is fantastic they have decided to create this once in a lifetime event. Last year I worked with BADOIT to turn a Parisian commuter train into a free fine dining restaurant– now it’s London’s turn. There is a growing recognition in the restaurant industry that we need to champion and celebrate simple, everyday food, and that it can be just as impressive as the most delicate truffle soufflé. My menu, which will remain a mystery until the event itself, will combine the freshest, best quality ingredients to create a truly memorable lunch break for our guests.”"

When - Thursday 13th June, from 12.30pm

Where - Soho Square, W1D

Tickets - Free by emailing BadoitExpress@HavasWW.com with name, party size and contact phone number

Mama Wang's Kitchen's Weekend Chinese Lunches in Marylebone

Mama Wang's Kitchen is popping up at Asia House in New Cavendish Street for the first weekend in May to host two lunches featuring regional Chinese food.  & it's BYOB!

"On a mission to bring regional Chinese food to London, Mama Wang’s Kitchen will take you on a gastronomic tour of Shandong province – long considered the godfather of northern Chinese cuisine – in a banquet-style, nine-dish lunch in the grand Georgian library of Asia House.
Think sweet and spicy razor clams, beef shin braised in Tsingtao beer (brewed in Shandong), red-braised pork cheeks and mackerel guo tie dumplings, a traditional Shandong family recipe. The menu takes its lead from the Landscapes of China exhibition at Asia House by Shandong-painter Wang Qizhi, also known as the man who painted Mao. Diners can take a quick look around the exhibition, welcome Chinese cocktail in hand.
All our ingredients will be high quality and, where possible, locally sourced. Each dish is shared by four guests in the spirit of sociable Chinese dining so come armed with good conversation and slick chopstick skills. We’ll tell the stories behind the dishes as we explore a regional cuisine less celebrated than its southern cousins. We will provide a cocktail and bottomless green tea but BYOB!"

Sabel's Saturday Dinners & Sunday Lunches at F. Cooke in Broadway Market

F. Cooke on Broadway Market is one of the most iconic pop-up venues.  It's open for Elles, pie and mash during the week, but it often gets used for other things at the weekend, and the latest people to use it are Sabel, who are hosting a series of Saturday dinners and Sunday lunches there.

"Sabel will be providing British food in a sociable setting. A short menu will be served at the table with dishes such as grilled sea trout with buttermilk, dill oil and horseradish or slow cooked pork shoulder, mustard greens and stinking bishop macaroni cheese. At the bar drinks and a menu comprised of oxtail and smoked bone marrow pie, hot ham sandwiches and a snack like bacon popcorn will be served.
The food will be cooked by myself and served by my girlfriend Lianna Jewell with the assistance of my brothers, their partners and friends. A proper family and friends affair, suitably named after our mums maiden name. I've ended up doing this after ten years in London restaurants and caterering. Working as a head chef at a few places, getting tired out by some michelin stared restaurants and spending a little time staying with friends and stageing at some notable restaurants in New York. Lianna's background is events, planning parties, activities and dinners for clients like Skype, EE and Friends Life."

Greek Meze are back on Sunday 24th with a special Lenten Feast.  It's only a one day event this time, but with two sittings, for an early or late lunch.

"Next Monday, most Greeks will go up a hill with a kite and a picnic basket full of fasting foods to celebrate the start of Lent and arrival of spring. It looks like spring will come a bit later here, so hope you can join us on Sunday 24th March to share a great Lenten Feast.
Without a hill and the guarantee of Greek sunshine we have opted for the ubiquitous charm of a Hackney warehouse.
We do however promise a true Orthodox Lenten feast. Expect a great array of salads and shellfish.. .
There is a choice of a 12.30 or 16.30 seating.
You are welcome to BYOB but we will also have a bar with excellent Greek wines and beer.

Darjeeling Express' Calcutta Pop-up lunch at The Cinnamon Club

I met Asma from Darjeeling Express a few months ago at one of Edible Experiences' events, and after that she got in touch to ask me to feature a very special event she's hosting - a Saturday special lunch at The Cinnamon Club.  See below for full description and mouth-watering menu!

"One afternoon. One cook. One city of many cuisines and many stories. Many memories that remain with you for life.
From Persian nobility to the British military, the food heritage of Calcutta is a confluence of myriad food cultures and flavours. Embark on an incredible edible journey with Darjeeling Express in the private dining room at The Cinnamon Club, discovering the city’s authentic cuisine transplanted to this stunning London venue.
The setting provides an atmospheric background in which to savour dishes proudly rooted in centuries of traceable heritage. Calcutta’s food is as unique and vibrant as the city herself – a metropolis born from trading villages around the bustling port along the Hooghly River. Each and every traveller and trader community left their legacy in the form of a distinct culinary footprint.
Historically, Bengal has a unique way of recording and telling stories. Since the
15th century, Baul singers’ songs and style have amalgamated Sufi Islam, Tantra,
Buddhism and Vaishnavism. The traditional and exquisite hand-woven Balachuri
saree’s origins lie in a collaboration between the silk weavers of Murshidabad
and the then-ruler of the principality, Khan Murshid Quli. The border of this saree
narrates the legendary stories contained within the Mahabharata.
This afternoon, I am attempting to weave Calcutta’s complex and fascinating story
through my food, and hope you will join me to learn her tale.
