In the subject line -

Full Fillings at The Londesborough, Stoke Newington - Melanie Blatt’s burger pop-up is back at the N16 gastropub, 2 nights a week - Thurs 28th & then Tues and Thurs (also the pic)

Philippe Sonou at Pasero, N15 - Philippe will be popping up for one week with West African fine dining concept Marquis for 4 days - Ends Sat 30th

Chop Cheese Bodega with Truffle Burger, SE1 - The latest #truffleandfriends guest street food trader is bringing New York’s most famous chopped cheese sandwiches to London - From Fri 29th

Last week's top link - Bangkok Delivery Boy at Jazu, SE8 - A two week Thai pop-up - with a good menu of sausages, sea bass and more - Weds-Sun til 31st

A slightly less busy week than the last - I think everyone is bank holiday-ed out, or Carnival-ed out of something - but lots of good stuff out there, and according to my clicking around on Wednesday lunchtime you can still get tickets for the Meatopia BBQ festival (Thurs-Sat)

Recent Highlights -

Kaunter at Giacco’s, N5 - Chef Jemma Harrison’s tribute to Eastern European and New York deli food has now landed at Giacco’s in Highbury.  What this means in practice is lots of very yummy, imaginative comforting dishes; I loved the cured sardines, and the chicken schnitzel ‘kiev’ - oh and the cherry sorbet.  In fact I loved all of it, and I think you will too.  The menu will change regularly over the 4 month run; lots of reasons to go again!  - Serving Tues-Fri evenings, and all day Saturday.

Los Antojitos at The King & Co, SW4 - & then a Saturday lunchtime trip to one of my locals, for their new pop-up, a Mexican-inspired menu from chef Nathan, aka Exploding Shirts.  Nathan was a chef in London, then fancied a change, went to Mexico and has been cooking there for ten years.  Now back for a spell, he is bringing his smarts - and menus - to the pub, including tacos, quesadillas, ceviche, and lots more, with a plan to do special Taco Tuesdays and something for Mexican Independence Day.  Very tasty - I wolfed through 4 dishes - and I’m glad I live near enough to go back again soon. - Serving Mon-Sat

Definition of ‘Pop-up’ - Essentially something temporary (‘go now or miss it’, or an external chef taking over the kitchen of another venue (which is the majority of these, and a growing trend).

The listings this week are broadly arranged by date - ones you can visit today at the beginning, things you need to wait til Saturday for are lower down.

The list has been collated from the past week or so by endlessly scanning Twitter & Insta, reading newsletters, stalking chefs (not literally), enjoying the colder weather, and also reading things that PRs and (more often) chefs & their friends send me.  Please keep sending me your tips and invites - DM-ing on Instagram works best (@londonpopups) or mention me on Twitter (also @londonpopups) - I don't always notice posts on the feed (but I'm pretty good...)

Kaunter at Giacco’s, N5 - A new concept from Jemma Harrison - New York deli meets Eastern Europe - serving for 4 months at Giaccco’s - Tues-Sat

Andi Oliver at The Raglan, E17 - Andi will be on the BBQ, cooking lobster, chops, chicken , oysters, fluffy fresh naga butter drenched naan - Sun 24th

Last week's top link - Los Antojitos at The King & Co in Clapham - A Mexican-inspired residency; the name means ‘little cravings’ -  Daily

A much busier week than last week - I think as a combination of it being a bank holiday weekend, and a payday weekend for some / many too.

Lots to explore, lots of new ones, returns, and collabs.

Ling Ling’s at Swirl, E10 - Modern Chinese dishes for four days - two weeks of Fridays and Saturdays - 15th & 16th, 22nd & 23rd

Suzie Bakos at Jimmy’s Pop-up on the South Bank - A 6 course Middle Eastern-inspired feast using fresh British produce - Sun 17th 1pm-4pm

Recent Highlights

Lucy Sparrow - Not a food pop-up, but a food-inspired art exhibition.  Lucy has created her version of a classic British chippy in the Lyndsey Ingram Gallery in Mayfair.  I’ve loved Lucy’s work since I first saw her ‘corner shop’ exhibition - where she re-created a classic corner shop - and this time all of exhibits are for sale, including complete fish suppers, and smaller, pocket money items like portions of mushy peas - The attention to detail and the sense of humour is always there - Open Weds-Sun til 14th Sept .

Marie Mitchell - A return visit to Marie’s residency at Hometipple, the wine store and restaurant in Walthamstow.  Marie is a great cook, and her fish dishes in particular shine through.  The second time round I loved the Scottish mackerel with sorrel sauce, and the roast aubergine with chickpeas.  Hurry - this one ends at the end of August - serving Tues-Sun

LaLot - Chef Eric is one of the most busy and prolific of all the pop-up chefs; this was probably his 10th (or more) pop-up of the year, with two nights at TableAt464 in Kingsland Road, E8.  It was great to see him again, and very entertaining to see the front of house staff try his Vietnamese dishes for the first time.  Minds blown!  I had the prawn salad, and then the pork collar, fresh from the Konro grill.  This one is finished now, but you can find Eric’s next pop-ups through his Insta feed.

& it looked a bit like - https://www.instagram.com/p/DNIXH7GsLiy/ (poor lighting affected the shots, sadly)

As always, please check out my map of the pop-ups; they would all really appreciate your support, along with the rest of the hospitality sector.

Kerb Social Club - A new *permanent* bar and venue from Kerb, in Spitalfields Market, with food by Oh My Dog (hotdogs), Cutie Pies (pizza) and Only Jerkin (chicken) - open daily from Fri 1st

Last week's top link - Rice Paddy at Mabel, Penge - Sadly called off for last week - but the Thai BBQ has been re-scheduled for Thurs 7th

A slightly quieter week this week but still lots of goodies - some new, some returning - and lots of reasons to get out and explore somewhere new in our beautiful city.

Recent Highlights

The Cheese Bar in Camden - #NotAPopup - but a re-working of their Camden restaurant to the popular ‘sushi conveyor belt, but with cheese’ Pick & Cheese format that works so well in Seven Dials Market.  I first met Mathew from The Cheese Truck when they did a pop-up in Clapham about 10 years ago, and can still remember my first bite of their toastie!  Since they they have opened 4 restaurants (including one in Berlin) and it was great to try the conveyor belt concept again (I was invited to the pre-launch night).  I’d forgotten what a magical experience it is to see the plates coming round the room towards you, and the combinations are very creatively done - e.g. Cornish gouda paired with a small piece of clotted cream fudge.  Yum!  Now open daily, and their ‘bottomless plates’ night on Wednesdays is only £20 in the Camden restaurant for the first month.

Chef Norman Musa at The King & Co in Clapham - A return visit to Norman’s ‘Makan Makan’ Malaysian residency to try more of his dishes.  This time round I had the prawn laksa - a special but I’m told it will be on for the rest of the run - the Kerabu salad, with kale, coconut & pomegranate seeds, and a classic Chicken Kari - with a side of rice.  Hurry - this one ends on Sun 10th - Daily

Swilipino at Swirl, E10 - Chef Tintin cooks a fusion of Swedish and Filipino dishes, reflecting her heritage, and I’ve been putting up listings of her events for years.  I finally got to eat her food last weekend at Swirl, the wine bar near Leyton Midland station, and it was well worth the wait.  Lovely dumplings - confusingly called ‘potstickers’ on the menu - and then a big bowl of beef in burnt coconut sauce.  Watch out for Tintin’s next pop-ups (she will be at the ESEA centre this Saturday https://www.instagram.com/wednesdays_fun/p/DMKpB50sufH/ )
