Joy in Marylebone - A Pop-up Cafe, Plant Shop, and Weekly Supper Club

Joy, Stevie Parle's pop-up restaurant at Portobello Dock has now moved to 94 Marylebone High Street, W1U 4RG, as a cafe, plant shop, and home to a weekly supper club.  I visited earlier this week and found a large space with a high-ceiling, and I'm told that the weekly Thursday night supper clubs will start in mid September.  PS - try the chocolate cake from the cafe - it's divine!

"JOY, the Pandemic pop-up restaurant, farm shop-grocery store, plant shop, some time Jazz club and occasional wontoneria opened in July 2020 by Tom Dixon and Stevie Parle is no longer at Portobello Dock. We are are on a constant search for an engaging and exciting permanent location we need to continue to to bring JOY.

For now, we have a little home at 94 Marylebone High St, where we sell beautiful house plants, cook a tiny menu each day using the super-fresh Kent garden produce we’re known for. Once a week Stevie and Vincenzo cook a dinner in the shop for around 30 people."

Bruno's Bakes & Coffee - A Pop-up French Bakery on Brick Lane

Bruno's Bakes & Coffee is a pop-up independent bakery & coffee shop at 202 Brick Lane (the Bethnal Green Road end, near to Bacon St).  It was created by award winning pastry chef Bruno Breillet, and has previously been open in Rochester, Kent, but has now moved to London with this pop-up, provisionally open until the end of May.  Expect lots of freshly baked French patisserie both sweet and savoury.  Sounds wonderful!

"Bruno's Bakes & Coffee is a small independent bakery/coffee shop specializing in classic French and modern American cakes, tarts and savoury items.
Bruno Breillet is the pastry chef and he makes everything on site.  You could come in on any given day and find a classic Breton Kouign Amann sitting next to a Peanut Butter and Chocolate Pie, or a Strawberry Tart next to a Caramel Popcorn Cheesecake.  We also have a small savory menu based around Croque Monsieurs, perhaps having three or four different kinds to choose from.   Basically, our menu changes constantly depending on Bruno’s mood and of course our customers’ desires.  Bruno has won a Master Chef Live/BBC Good Food Show Bursary Award and has received a total of 5 stars from the Guild of Fine Food’s Great Taste Awards.  He’s been featured in Delicious Magazine and has recipes in the DK book, Chocolate: Indulge Your Inner Chocoholic."

Brolly & Ice Cream Pop-up Exhibition and Cafe in Shoreditch

The Jaguar Shoes Collective in Kingsland Road are getting into the summer spirit by holding a special exhibition, with attached refreshments.

"To celebrate the contrary British summer, JaguarShoes Collective are proud to present a tongue-in-cheek exhibition & pop up shop selling a fine selection of Teas and pre-war inspired flavoured ice creams.
‘Brolly ‘n’ Ice Cream’ will be a summer spectacle for tourists and locals alike.
The exhibition features bespoke graphic wallpaper, giant ice cream sculptures and an inverted umbrella lighting installation alongside a selection of illustrated products created by the JaguarShoes roster of artists.
To accompany the exhibition, the fashion retail area of the building will transform into a Teas and Ices shop. Inspired by the 1930-1940's era; a time of home-making, frugality and rationing.
Focused on courting those tourist and locals wishing to experience undiluted British fair; the offering will present classically simple recipes; fruit cakes (apple, rhubarb, pear) a selection of biscuits (including a signature home-made custard cream), all of which are created from the kind of ingredients ‘one would have found in one’s garden or pantry'. No food colour, no frosting, no doilies.  Just beautiful, delicious and tasteful classics presented in un-dyed baking parchment squares, simple glass domed cake plates and Kilner jars.
Ices on offer include flavours; Damson, Summer fruit, Gooseberry and Elderflower, Toffee Apple and Rhubarb and stem ginger.
The tea selection includes the finest fresh leaf offerings; from Darjeeling to Lady Grey and a Superfruit, Chai and a nettle selection for those seeking something healthy or healing.
Building upon The Old Shoreditch Station’s original heritage, ‘Brolly & Ice Cream’ draws together classic components to create a stylish pastiche of British summertime within the venue’s cosy period interior and aims to take visitors back to (or to introduce them to) the wonder of the changeable British summertime; childhood holidays devouring a melting cone under an umbrella."

Food Art Talk Pop-up Cafe & Supper Club in Soho

A brand new pop-up cafe is opening in Soho on Monday, just days after the organisers got access to the premises.  It will be open as a cafe during the day, and also host six evening supper clubs in August.

"Literary salon meets stuffing your face. With art.
The cafe is opening on Monday 30 July at 10am and will be open during the day until about 6pm. This has all happened very quickly and we've had less than a week to set it up. So we are starting simply - with coffee, tea and cake - with more to follow once we've settled in.
We are also having six supper club dinners on 16, 17, 23, 24, 30 and 31 August showcasing amateur cooks - £40 per person for a no-choice three course dinner (with wine and beer available for purchase). Each dinner will be preceded by a talk event - check back for details.
Our aim is to imagine a new way of eating out drawing on the elements we all like best from a good evening out – the people, the environment and of course the food and drink. Eating should be a communal experience where you meet old friends, make new ones, discuss the issues of the day, learn something and have fun. We want you to leave having eaten a delicious meal in a beautifully designed setting buzzing with new ideas, inspired by the people you meet."

When - 29th July - 2nd September

July Pop-up Vintage Fair in Hampstead

This Sunday, 8th July, the Pop-up Vintage Fair will be appearing in Hampstead for the last time before their summer break.

"Last chance before the summer break to pick up some Summer Vintage Bargains at the Pop Up Vintage Fair at St Stephen’s Rosslyn Hill, Pond Street, Hampstead NW3 2PP on Sunday 8th July.   Just up the road from Belsize Park Tube Station (Northern Line).
Lots of lovely Summer vintage stock to choose from including festival maxi dresses, tea dresses & denim shorts.  As well as designer & affordable vintage fashion there’ll be vintage accessories, vintage spectacles & sunglasses, jewellery, homeware, handpainted furniture, antiques, collectables & more.
Pop by the Pincurls and Pout stand where professional makeup & hair stylists Jeanie & Betsy can recreate that perfect vintage hair & makeup from any decade – 30s/40s bombshell, 50s rockabilly, 60s chick or 70s hippy, whichever decade is your favourite!
Back by popular demand the harmonising trio The Wayward Sisters will be performing some good old-fashioned toe-tapping tunes to entertain us!
After all that shopping and preening, sit back and enjoy tea with homemade cake, or afternoon cream teas in our Pop Up Vintage Tea Room.  If the sun is shining the courtyard will be open for tea in the sunshine!"

When - Sunday 8th July - 11am - 4pm

Where - St Stephen's Rosslyn Hill, Pond Street, Hampstead NW3 2PP
