Don Papa Rum's Casa Sugarlandia Filipino Pop-up in Shoreditch

Don Papa Rum is opening a 3 week Filipino pop-up at 46 Great Eastern Street on 22nd May 2019, featuring lots of rum, lots of cocktails, food from Filipino chefs Sarap, The Adobros, and Food with Mae, and even Karaoke nights.  There will also be two ticketed supper clubs - Food with Mae on Tues 28th May, and The Adobros on Weds 5th June.  This is going to be excellent!

"Casa Sugarlandia runs from 22nd May to 8th June, taking over a two-storey venue on Shoreditch’s Great Eastern Street, revamped as a fully set-designed space, offering Londoners a spectacular taste of the island of Sugarlandia in the Philippines via some of its customs, flavours and flora.
Inspired by the real Filipino island of Negros, known locally as “Sugarlandia”, guests are encouraged to venture into a multi-sensory world where all is not as it seems.  Programme highlights include “Masked Karaoke”, hosted by international drag collective Sink The Pink, dining experiences from some of the capital’s leading names in Filipino cuisine and a bespoke menu of Don Papa house cocktails.
While the programme changes weekly, there are some mainstays, and those with a penchant for Karaoke will be able to jump on the microphone, Filipino-style each week.  Invented in the Philippines in 1973, Karaoke comes to the Casa on Thursdays, kicking off on Thursday 23rd May with the queens of Sink the Pink hosting proceedings. For those on the shy side or simply hoping to coax out their alter egos, there’s also the option to don a mask to spare their blushes and truly let loose. This isn’t your regular sing along, but Masked Karaoke, Sugarlandia style.
The in-house menu comes courtesy of a rolling roster of three chef teams each presenting their take on the flavour of the Philippines. Nicknamed “Asia’s last secret cuisine”, Filipino food upholds rich flavours and displays a wide range of culinary techniques emanating from the 7,000 islands that make up the Philippines. BBQ chefs SARAP line up alongside London supper club chefs Mae Williams and The Adobros.
There will also be two, ticketed supper club experiences at Casa Sugarlandia. Mae Williams brings her authentic flavours for a five-course menu (28th May) whilst The Adobros present their distinct culinary classics (4th June). Both menus will include a complimentary Don Papa cocktail and the rum as an ingredient in a selection of dishes.
On another night, concoctions will be served with exquisitely edible sugar-spun garnishes designed by the artist Fernando La Posse showcasing the provenance of the unique Filipino sugar used to make Don Papa."

A Map of all the Pop-ups for London Cocktail Week October 2018

London Cocktail Week (LCW) takes place from Monday 1st - Sunday 7th October 2018 all around London.  As in previous years, I've created a map of all of the pop-ups and bar takeovers (blue ones are open for 3 days or more, purple is for shorter than that).

The Cocktail Village is this year at The Boiler House, at 152 Brick Lane, and will be open from Weds 3rd - Sun 7th with lots of bars to explore.  Entry is via a £10 pass that you can buy on the LWC site here.

This pass also gets you a special selection of £6 cocktails in bars across London - full list here - from 1st - 7th October.

On to the pop-ups and bar takeovers.  By my reckoning there are 18 of these, 9 open for 3 days or more, and 9 open for less time than that, many just for Tuesday 2nd October.

Here are some of my picks:

Broken Shaker at Madison in One New Change - Tues 2nd-Fri 5th Oct - Rooftop Terrace One, New Change, London EC4M 9AF
"Award-winning Broken Shaker has taken Miami, Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York by storm and now, for the first time, Miami’s tropical hotspot is bringing its eclectic spirit to London for an exclusive pop-up at Madison London from Tuesday 2nd October – Friday 5th October.
Equipped with a bespoke drinks menu from Bobby Eldridge, The Broken Shaker’s very own cocktail connoisseur, and Miami’s top female bartender Courtney Lane to assist , Madison will be shaken up to celebrate London Cocktail Week 2018 in style.
Ranked 18th on the list of the World’s Best 50 Bars 2017, for a limited time only Broken Shaker will create the ultimate urban oasis in London, bringing tropical vibes to our City rooftop.
The pop up will run from Tuesday 2nd – Friday 5th October, from 2 – 9pm everyday. We’ll have our usual lineup of rooftop DJs on Thursday – Saturday."

The Dead Rabbit Irish Whiskey - Tues 2nd Oct - The Sun Tavern, 441 Bethnal Green Rd, London E2 0AN
"Following the success of last year’s collaboration, Bethnal Green’s The Sun Tavern welcomes Manhattan’s The Dead Rabbit once more, with the arrival of the NYC Taproom to London in collaboration with The Dead Rabbit Irish Whiskey.
As part of London Cocktail Week, The Dead Rabbit Taproom Takeover will take place for one night only and sees Anna Kremen, Jessica Friedman and Genesis Cruz of the serial ‘World’s Best Bar’ winners team behind the bar. They’ll be serving up a menu comprised of three cocktails hand-selected from their exclusive Taproom by beverage director Jillian Vose menu showcasing The Dead Rabbit Irish Whiskey, which launched earlier this year.
Cocktails on offer include The Dead Rabbit’s celebrated Irish Coffee featuring The Dead Rabbit Irish Whiskey, as well as The Sun’s famous Beer & A Bump, using their Umbrella Brewing Ginger Beer. Plus there will be special guest DJ’s spinning New York- inspired sets all night long."

Hendricks Gin Tini Martini Bar - Weds 3rd - Fri 5th Oct - Swordtail Studios, 2083 Acton Mews, Haggerston, E8 4DG
"In a tale of both epic – and miniature – proportions, the unusualists over at Hendrick’s Gin are throwing a three-night celebration of the most sophisticated of drinks, the martini – by launching the diminuitively delightful: Hendrick’s Gin Tini Martini Bar.
Every evening will explore how the martini is appreciated across the globe, celebrating how it has been reimagined thrugh a distinctively surreal Hendrick’s lens– elevating the artistry and undiluted enjoyment of the tipple, even in its littlest size.
Nightly from 7pm as well as from 9pm, guests will be welcomed to the Tini Martini Bar by a pygmy goat, who will guide them towards the chambers where they are issued with their Tini Martini Passport to begin their journey into the peculiar and the unknown. From a portal that allows one to peer into a magical world of miniatures to competing in a series of microscopic games, the Tini Martini Bar will transport guests into a world of warped proportions.
The pop-up will also feature takeovers from some of the world's best bars including:
Team UK (Wednesday): Dukes Bar, London); The London EDITION
Team USA (Thursday): Employees Only, New York;  Sweet Liberty, Miami
Team Euro (Friday): Kinly Bar, Frankfurt; Schumann's Bar am Hofgarten, Munich; *ISM, Oslo"
Note - this one costs £12 for two hours - Tickets here

The Absolut Porn Star Martini House - Weds 3rd - Sat 6th Oct - 19 Greek Street, Soho, W1D 4DT

Moonshine Saloon - the Immersive Pop-up Wild West Bar on the King's Road

Moonshine Saloon is an immersive Wild West bar on the King's Road, where visitors get measured up for a stetson and cowboy gear (perfect for photo opportunities), and then head down to the saloon to drink moonshine cocktails.  It's open Thursday to Saturdays from 24th May - 25th August, and £33.99 gets you a 1 hour 45 minute slot, with 4 cocktails (you can pay extra once you're there, and stay longer.)  Looking forward to trying this!

"From the team behind the sell-out BYOB bar concept, Alcotraz, comes Moonshine Saloon, a one-of-a-kind immersive cocktail bar experience which is set to transport guests from the streets of West London to the streets of the Wild West.
Located on the King’s Road, Moonshine Saloon is the centre of an undercover moonshine empire, a mysterious underworld where everyone looks out for themselves and nothing is quite as it seems.
Inspired by the captivating tales of the Wild West and its covert operations, Moonshine Saloon invites guests to bring their own liquor to be granted entry to the undercover saloon and into the dark world of moonshining.
Upon entering, apprentice moonshiners encounter a street that looks like it’s been plucked straight from the dusty towns of the Wild West. First stop is the local tailor, who will measure guests up for Stetson Hats and Cowboy gear, ensuring they don’t attract attention in the West for the wrong reasons.
Once they look the part, The King of The Moonshiners will grant guests exclusive access into the shadiest spirit making business in town. Upon being taken downstairs to the Saloon, they can try their luck at card and dice games, exchange tales of life in the West and enjoy personalised moonshine cocktails, all while evading the beady eye of the local Sheriff. Those who manage to escape the Law as a Moonshiner in the Saloon are invited to stop for a refreshment in the General Store before leaving the Wild West!
The unique concept, created by Inventive Productions, aims to build on the successful path that Alcotraz paved by offering drinks crafted by highly experimental mixologists, all without rules and menus to follow."

The Wild Turkey Lodge above The Ten Bells pub in Spitalfields

Wild Turkey has opened its Wild Turkey Lodge on the first floor of The Ten Bells pub, opposite Spitalfields Market.   It's serving four twists on the classic Old Fashioned, plus some cold meat platters and more, and is open daily from 5pm til midnight, until the end of February.  Go and revel in the vibes!

"Authentic American bourbon Wild Turkey and East London pub The Ten Bells have teamed up to launch The Wild Turkey Lodge. Nestled in the middle of Spitalfields, venture up to the pub’s first floor and find yourself transported stateside to a traditional American hunting lodge. A sanctuary from the grey London winter, this is a true urban-meet-forest retreat with a bourbon menu to match.
Decked out in warm leathers with wooden tables, the lodge comes complete with birch bark candles, plush sheepskin, taxidermy and regal portraits lining the walls. The setting takes inspiration from the Kentucky hunting grounds where the Wild Turkey name originated back in 1940 during a famous turkey hunting trip. Make sure not to miss Walter, the Lodge’s resident Wild Turkey.
Warm yourself from the inside out with a special Wild Turkey 101 drinks menu featuring four twists on the iconic Old Fashioned cocktail all made with Wild Turkey 101 bourbon, the ideal base due to its high rye content, rich and bold taste. Choose from the Classic Wild Turkey 101 Old Fashioned; the Pendennis Club, inspired by the private members’ club that lays claim to the inventing the drink, which features the addition of crushed fresh orange and Maraschino cherries; the Old Smoky with a mix of woodchip infused Wild Turkey 101, orange bitters and charred rosemary; and the French Old Fashioned, which has the addition of Cognac. The menu also features three expressions from the Wild Turkey range, available straight up, on the rocks or with a mixer – Wild Turkey 101, Wild Turkey Rye and Wild Turkey Rare Breed. Urban carnivores and veggie forgers can also rejoice with festive sharing boards available to order, offering a selection of cured meats, cheeses, pies and picked veg.Leave the Jeep at home, keep those bellies in the closet, there’s no need to leave London with the Wild Turkey Lodge at Ten Bells. London in winter is starting to feel like a warmer experience already."
