Lerato London's African Afternoon Tea in Clerkenwell

A new African High Tea is coming to London!  Created by Lerato London, it takes place on Sunday 11th September at The Printworks Kitchen in Clerkenwell, with sittings at 1pm nd 3pm.  £37 gets you champagne on arrival, followed by all sorts of savoury and sweet treats, plus lots of different teas.  Hopefully this will become a regular event.

"At my African Afternoon Tea, you will be treated to champagne on arrival and a selection of luxuriously exotic African single estate teas paired with a changing selection of contemporary African savouries and sweets. My teas and chocolates have been sourced from fair trade producers like Satenwa Tea Estate in Malawi, and the Kuapa Kokoo cocoa-growing co-operative in Ghana, who secure premium market prices and the best welfare for its owner farmers.
I am desperately in love with food and as seen in my recipes and articles for The Guardian in Nigeria, my cooking is heavily influenced by my experiences, family, environment and the wonderful seasons which I want to offer on an plate. I hope to do so at LERATO LONDON.
After my recent journey foraging across Nigeria I enjoyed learning and sharing with local communities across the country. The women selling mangoes under a bush of mango trees, the village women preserving food using wonderful techniques I hadn’t known, street food hawkers cooking and selling corn, the vibrant tomatoes and peppers from Jos in the Northern region, well known for its exceptionally arable land and fine weather, and last but not least my mother’s love of Boli or Bole (a popular street food of roasted plantain) eaten with open fire roasted peanuts and the goodness of the moringa leaves from the trees shading our house; all these inspire my cooking.
The menu is full of indulgence and a celebration of African and British provenance, using Madagascan and Ghanaian cacao, British grown berries, Ugandan organic vanilla beans, West African nut butters, mangoes, with exquisite teas from Malawi, Kenya and South Africa. A medley of fresh vegetables such as British grown lovage, organic tomatoes, cucumbers and beautiful radishes and more will be used to create this special afternoon tea.
Vegetarians and vegans have a wide selection to enjoy as many of my recipes are fruit and vegetable based, with substitutions used where necessary. I love afternoon tea so much that I have created my special tribute, a new take on tradition. A sumptuous spread of bold African flavours; delicious, decadent and only tamed in size for the tradition of high tea."

Good and Proper Tea's 4 Week Residency at tokyobike near Old Street

KERB trader Good and Proper Tea, who sell tea from a converted Citroen Van are moving indoors for a month in February and March with a residency at bike store tokyobike, near to Old Street.  They will be serving tea & home made cakes every day, and will also have three special tea tasting events - see the link at the bottom for how to book a place on one of these.

"Street-food favourite and expert brewers, Good & Proper Tea, are teaming up with tokyobike for a four-week residency at their cycling concept store on Tabernacle Street from 18th February.
Since their launch in December 2012 following a successful Kickstarter campaign, Good & Proper Tea has gained a loyal following on the street-food scene thanks to their unique approach to takeaway tea. Every day, they custom-brew a selection of carefully-sourced loose-leaf teas from their much-loved 1974 Citroen-H van, until now based at KERB King’s Cross and Brockley Market. The partnership with toykobike will be Good & Proper Tea’s first foray into trading from a fixed location - from a custom-built ‘Brew Bar’ inside the store.
Founder of Good & Proper Tea, Emilie Holmes, says, “The people of Shoreditch are spoilt for choice when it comes to coffee – it’s a notoriously caffeine-fuelled community – but up until now it has been near impossible to get a really good cup of tea. We hope the move will allow us to continue changing the way people think about tea, and thanks to the beautiful space at tokyobike our customers will, for the first time, be able to take time to sit and enjoy the tea too. “
The Good & Proper Brew Bar will serve teas from all over the world, including Japan, where tokyobike’s iconic cycles are designed.
The Good & Proper Brew Bar will launch at tokyobike on Tuesday 18th February and will serve a changing menu from their collection of single-estate teas for sit in or takeaway, alongside a selection of homemade cakes. The tea will also be available to buy in 50g or 100g packs to take home.
Tea Tastings hosted by Emilie will be held on Tuesday 25th February, Tuesday 4th March and Tuesday 11th March. Each session will cover a range of topics including: an introduction to tea types; how the teas are grown and then processed, why loose leaf tea, and how to brew the perfect cup. The tastings will begin at 7pm and last one hour, with an opportunity to chat to Emilie over a complimentary G&P tea cocktail afterwards."

When - 18th February - 18th March
Brew Bar serving times will be Tuesday – Friday 8:30am - 6pm, Saturday and Sunday 11am – 5pm.

Where - tokyobike, 87-89 Tabernacle St, London EC2A 4BA

Miss Cakehead's Halloween 'Eat Your Heart Out' Cake Shop with Kraken Rum in Shoreditch

Miss Cakehead's 'Eat Your Heart Out' grisly cake shop returns for the third year running from 25th - 28th October.  Expect cakes that on the surface look disturbing or revolting, but are as delicious as any you're ever likely to taste.  Wounds, body parts, maggots, pus...  It's all here, with a special 'mouth of Kraken' too, and lots of rum.

"Eat Your Heart Out, the London based globally infamous Halloween pop up cake shop, is back for it’s third year and will be open from the 25th – 28th at The Rag Factory in Brick Lane. The edible art show and cake shop is entitled ‘Feed The Beast’ and is supported by The Kraken Rum. All the cakes have a beastly theme with the top sellers predicted to include vagina dentata cupcakes by The Tattooed Bakers, a ‘Wounds’ cupcake set by Cake Revolution and interactive maggot extraction cupcakes by Twisted Fondant which allow for mango flavoured maggots and pus to be removed prior to eating.
Incredible life-sized rum liqueur chocolate body parts are set to be another show (or appetite) stopper – disturbingly realistic they are created using casts of food artists Kate Haigh’s own hands and feet.
Anyone with a love of extreme cakes will not be disappointed with the large ‘Mouth of Kraken’ creation by Heartache Cakes for it comes with almost 100 individual hand made chocolate teeth and a terrifying sense of foreboding destined to set even the most gore hardened cake lovers on edge. Mouth of Kraken cupcakes have also been created for for those only able to deal with less toothy sweet creations.
If you find cakes replicating giant bloody eyeballs of mythical beasts, chocolate skulls and rocky road topped with stitched detail too much for you then The Kraken Rum will also be available in the space to steady the nerves – the dark spiced rum also being used in many of the treats on sale ensuring they make look disturbing but will always taste delicious."

When - Friday 25th - Sunday 27th October 2013

Where - The Rag Factory, 16-18 Heneage St  London E1 5LJ
