The Green Vic 3 Month Pop-up 'Ethical Pub' in Shoreditch

The Green Vic is a 3 month pop-up at 46 Great Eastern Street, Shoreditch, billing itself as the world's most ethical pub.  It has sourced food and drink for ethical suppliers, including charaties and social enterprises, and has vegan bun slingers The Green Grill in the kitchen.  It's a nice relaxing space, and I'm glad to say that it was very busy when I visited.  Go and spend some money there!

"What makes a pub, the world's most ethical pub? Well according to The Green Vic, which is opening in Shoreditch and billing itself as just that, it's "where everything you buy and use has a positive environmental and social impact."
The pub is popping up for three months at Iron Bloom on Great Eastern Street. On their drinks list you'll find libations that, between them, support over 40 individual non-profit charities. So you can sup a pint of Brewgooder craft lager - a non profit which is donating money to clean water projects in Africa or have a G&T using Ginerosity craft gin made by a social enterprise which helps train, educate and mentor the homeless.
For food they've teamed up with vegan chefs The Green Grill serving up all plant-based products like the Red Devil burger pictured which features a sweet potato, red kidney bean and coriander patty with roasted red pepper, rocket, cheez slice and sriracha mayo. And on Saturdays they'll be throwing a Better World Brunch where five pounds of every ticket purchased will go towards charity.
The desire to make a difference also extends to who you'll find working at The Green Vic. One in four of the staff employed will be from a vulnerable or disadvantaged background, such as the homeless and people with disabilities."

Imad’s Syrian Kitchen x Choose Love's Pop-up Restaurant in Columbia Road

Imad's Syrian Kitchen has teamed up with Choose Love to open a pop-up restaurant to raise money for Hope Hospital, a children's hospital in Syria.  It opens on Thursday 29th March 2018, and runs Thursday to Sunday, with two sittings a day,  until the end of May (but hopefully longer).  Tickets are just £40 + fees, and it's BYOB with a £5 corkage charge.  Please support this fabulous initiative!

"A new pop-up kitchen has launched in the heart of London Shoreditch to raise funds for a children’s hospital in Syria. Run by Syrian refugee Imad Alarnab and charity Help Refugees, Imad’s Choose Love Kitchen invites customers to ‘experience the true taste of Syria’.
Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the famous flower market on Columbia Road, the new restaurant serves a traditional 3-course Syrian meal, cooked by one of the most famous chefs from Damascus.
All the profits raised will be used to fund Hope Hospital, a children’s hospital that has saved thousands of lives in Syria’s Aleppo region.
Hope Hospital became the first ever crowdfunded hospital in early 2016, providing incubators for new born babies, treatments for pregnant and postnatal women and lifesaving surgical operations to those injured in the conflict.
It is the only paediatric hospital in the Aleppo region, serving a community of over 250,000 people. But in a month, if funds aren’t raised, Hope Hospital will be forced to close.
Following the huge success of the Choose Love Store in Soho, Help Refugees has teamed up with the incredible Imad Alarnab to save Hope Hospital. Imad was a successful restaurateur in Damascus with two restaurants. But during the war, his restaurants were destroyed, and he was forced to flee the country in search of safety for his family. It was through this journey that he first met Help Refugees.
When he arrived in the UK, Imad found work as a car salesman and was able to bring his family to join him in England. Over time, he began to dream of running his own restaurant again. Imad then opened a series of pop-up restaurants in London that sold out every single night. This time round, instead of doing it for himself, he wanted to raise money for the people who really need it.
The restaurant will be fully staffed by Help Refugees volunteers, who will be on hand to serve food, answer any questions and take donations.
Customers simply buy a ticket online and turn up to enjoy a set menu of Imad’s signature Syrian dishes. All tickets cost just £40, and there will be two sittings for 20 people per night (and two per day on Sundays) where customers will have an hour and a half to enjoy a three course feast.
It’s BYO with a £5 corkage donation that will go directly to Hope Hospital. Diners can also expect surprise celebrity staff, events and special promotions."

When - 29th March - end of September 2018
Thursday - Saturday 7-8.30pm and 9-10.30pm, Sunday 12.30-2.30pm and 3-5pm

Where - 134 Columbia Road, London E2 7RG

The 'Waste' Dinner at Plot in Tooting, Raising Money for The People's Fridge

Love this!  The 'Waste' Dinner is a one night 4 course feast taking place on Tuesday 30th May at Plot restaurant in Tooting Broadway Market, where all the dishes will be made from produce that would have otherwise been thrown away, with 10% of the ticket price going to support The People's Fridge, the fridge where anyone can go and take leftover food collected from the nearby stores.  Tickets are just £45, and there are two sittings, at 6.30pm and 8.30pm.

"Plot, the British small plates restaurant in Tooting’s Broadway Market, will join forces with food charity, The People’s Fridge, for a one off ‘waste’ dinner made with produce, which would otherwise be thrown away, from their suppliers. In line with the growing trend for repurposing ‘wasted’ food in the UK, the kitchen will create a special menu and cocktails, with proceeds from the evening donated to the Fridge.
The four course menu will be determined on the day; dictated by produce scouted out from the traders at New Covent Garden market and Plot’s local suppliers who they work with year round. The result will be in-keeping with Plot’s style of simple, seasonal ingredients, well cooked, to create small plates which pack a punch. To whet your appetite, guests will be welcomed with a Negroni made from house-brewed vermouth using open bottles of wine from behind the bar, with a blend of spices and Campari. There will also be a specially created ‘Cabbage Sour’ cocktail, made with pickling liquor from the kitchen’s cabbage, along with cassis, gin, rosemary syrup and star anise.
10% of each ticket sold will be donated to The People's Fridge."

The 'Kheera Kitchen' Pop-up Indian Restaurant in Spitalfields, from Crisis

Kheera Kitchen is a pop-up Indian restaurant from Crisis, the charity for homeless people, open until the end of April at The Cafe from Crisis in Commercial Street, E1.  Run as a social enterprise, it will give homeless people and ex-offenders training in the hospitality industry to improve their career prospects.  It's open from Wednesday to Friday in the evenings, and at the weekends from 12 noon, with big bowls priced at £10, and sides at £5  Please support this great initiative!

"A new fresh Indian pop-up restaurant called Kheera Kitchen is launching in Spitalfields, London, in partnership with Crisis, the national charity for homeless people.
Housed in the Café from Crisis on Commercial Street, the restaurant will open its doors on the 20th January, and will offer customers healthy, fresh Indian food, whilst supporting Crisis’ work to help homeless people get back into employment.
Inspired by a motorbike ride across India and re-interpreted for Londoners, Kheera Kitchen is different; focusing on fresh flavours, not heat.
All food is made with carefully sourced ingredients to deliver lighter, clean tastes that are big on flavour, and not on heat. Sharing dishes are made for freshly baked bread, which takes centre stage for tearing and dipping. The restaurant doesn’t use any ghee in its preparation, all spices are imported from India and ground every day, and all dishes are cooked to order.
Small sharing plates at £5 include Kheera Coconut Eggs, and a Lamb Kati Roll, flash cooked spice-and-lime-marinated lamb, served in a flaky, buttery paratha.
Big Bowls are priced at £10. These include a Keralan Pork Bowl with fresh pineapple, and the Grilled Chicken with Cardamom Bowl, made with gram puree, curd and smoked chilli.
Sides, at £5 include Paneer, Mango and Tamarind Salad, and desserts comprise of a Fennel and Lime Burnt Cream Pot, and Chocolate, Orange and Anise Brownie with Mango Ice Cream, among other options.
The project is the result of a collaboration between hospitality industry stalwarts, David Read, chairman of procurement consultancy Prestige Purchasing, David Anderson, director of design consultancy CADA, and Jasper Wight, founder of TasteBed and co-founder of the salad bar chain Chop’d.
Kheera Kitchen will pop-up at Café from Crisis every evening from 6pm Wednesday to Friday, and from midday at weekends from 20th January until the end of April.
Café from Crisis is a social enterprise giving homeless people and ex-offenders training for the hospitality industry to further their career prospects. The rent paid by Kheera Kitchen’s for the site will go straight back into the charity."

British Lion eggs & Simon Rimmer's Sunny Side Up Pop-up Cafe in Drury Lane

The Sunny Side Up Pop-up Cafe will open for one (long) lunchtime only in Drury Lane, near Covent Garden, to promote the joys of eating eggs.  Launched by British Lion eggs, Sunday Brunch's Simon Rimmer will be in the kitchen, and Instagrammer Giulia Mulè aka MondoMulia will be taking two classes on how to take better food pics.  It's open on Wednesday 25th January 2017, 11am - 3pm only, and each of the dishes - like the egg and chorizo casserole below - will cost just £3, with proceeds going to the Alder Hay Children's Charity.  Be there!

"British Lion eggs is teaming up with celebrity chef Simon Rimmer to brighten up Britain with the launch of a ‘sunny side up’ pop-up café, open to the public on Wednesday 25 January 2017 in Covent Garden, London.
Simon Rimmer has created a collection of healthy one-pot egg dishes, showcasing the ease, versatility, speed and nutritional benefits of cooking with eggs, which he will serve at the retro pop-up. The café will help to counter the dreaded January blues by highlighting eggs as an affordable protein, giving your health, mood and wallet just the ‘pick me up’ it needs.
Eggs are a natural source of protein, vitamins and minerals.  A medium egg contains fewer than 70 calories and is naturally rich in vitamin D, which a lot of us lack in the winter months because our bodies can make little vitamin D when daylight hours are short. Eggs are also an excellent source of vitamins B12 and vitamin B2 (riboflavin) and a source of vitamin A, as well as containing essential minerals and trace elements, including phosphorus, iodine and selenium – all helping to boost nutrient levels at a time when they may be sorely needed.
Simon Rimmer says, “One-pot egg dishes are the ultimate go-to recipes for anyone wanting to make quick and healthy meals. Whether you’re a chef like me, or a novice in the kitchen, these recipes will have you feeding your friends and family like a pro and if that’s not a mood booster, I don’t know what is!”
The café promises to be the most ‘eggstagramable’ pop-up to date, with masterclasses by the popular food blogger Mondo Mulia, sharing her tips to get the perfect egg Instagram shot.
For £3 a dish you can try any of Simon’s #onepoteggs listed below. All profits from the café will be donated to Alder Hey Children’s Charity.
The lunchtime one-pot – rolled omelette slice
The healthy one-pot – no bread burritos
The family one-pot – egg and chorizo casserole
The quick one-pot – shakshuka with green salsa"

When - Wednesday 25th January 2017
11am - 3pm
20 minute Instagram classes with Mondo Mulia at 11.30am & 2.30pm

Where - 176 Drury Lane, WC2B 5QF
