Henrik Norén and Magnus Villnow's 'Gro' Pop-up at Carousel in Marylebone

Pic from http://www.inthekitchen.se/tag/magnus-villnow/
Scandinavian cooking has been one of the big trends of this winter (with Scandilicious, Nordic Yulefest, Tenu and more), and it's continuing into 2015 with this two week pop-up at Carousel in January.   Chefs Henrik Norén and Magnus Villnow's Gro is 'simple, honest food' focussing on vegetables - and this is a rare chance to sample their food in the UK.

"If you like vegetables and imaginative Scandinavian cooking, you’re going to love Gro.
When they first opened their twenty-seater restaurant in June 2013, chefs Henrik Norén and Magnus Villnow chose two sentences to describe their idea:
“Gro is an urban restaurant where availability and closeness rule. We believe in simple, honest food with a focus on vegetables”.
Since then the former F12 duo have gone from strength to strength, specialising in locally-sourced, seasonal produce and natural wines and locally-brewed beer.
This coming January, Henrik and Magnus will be bringing their “here and now” style of cooking to Carousel for two weeks – the only difference being that the “here” will be here, rather than Stockholm, and it won’t be -5°C outside.
We hope."

When - 13th - 17th & 20th - 24th January 2015

Where - Carousel, 71 Blandford St, Marylebone, W1U 8AB

Tickets - £35 + fees from Carousel here

United Ramen's New Year's Day Hangover Cure in Islington

Start 2015 with a very tasty hangover cure, courtesy of United Ramen at their restaurant in Upper Street, Islington.  With sittings at 2pm and 5pm, eat a specially designed meal to make yourself feel human again.   Tickets are just £17.

"How do you take care of the New Year's Day hangover headache?
Simple, eat ramen packed with Barbecue Short Rib, Braised Oxtail, Fried Shredded Potato and a Soy Egg in a Beef & Chicken Bone Broth!
Our chef, Girish, has whipped up this ONE DAY ONLY special just for you on New Year's Day. We aren't even opening the restaurant to the general public and are reserving this special treat just for Grub Clubbers. We'll even round off the meal with a gooey chocolate brownie and ice cream for dessert.
How do I know that our ramen will work as a hangover cure? There has actually been a scientific study on a dish from Korea - known as 'Old Sober' (Yak-a-mein) by US soldiers in the 1950s - that suggests soup noodle dishes like ramen have a curative effect due to the protein, carbohydrate and salt content.
We look forward to seeing you there!"

When - Thurs 1st January 2015, 7pm - 8.30pm
Seating 1: 14:00 - 15:30
Seating 2: 17:00 - 18:30

The Art of Dining's 'Gone Camping' Pop-up in Bethnal Green

Go camping in January 2015 - in a new (indoor) pop-up from the very imaginative Art of Dining.  they're creating a campsite with canvas, flickering lamplight, ghost stories and sing-songs, and five courses of camping-inspired food.  It's on in Bethnal Green over 14 nights between 7th and 22nd January - start getting excited!

"A pop up dining experience combining theatre, food and set design.
The perfect antidote to cold, dark, winter nights: summon up the spirit of summer, and go camping!
Lace up your walking boots, shake out your sleeping bag, check your torch batteries and fill your hip flask, then head to The Pickle Factory, in Bethnal Green for a camping expedition with a difference.
Five courses designed by chef Ellen Parr will encapsulate the fun, experimental, and sometimes charcoal-y flavours of campsite cooking. In one evening, you will experience a whole weekend of outdoors eating. Dishes include a posh pot-noodle (a version of Vietnamese pho); a Thai twist on the campfire barbecue; and a Moroccan breakfast dish with eggs and flat bread.
Release your inner Famous Five as you boil up water in a billy can, cook and share your food, whittle sticks for toasting marshmallows, listen to ghost stories, and join in the sing-song.
Set designer Alice Hodge will transform the bare white walls of The Pickle Factory into a campsite in the English countryside. Expect billowing canvas, flickering lamplight, nature all around, the seagull’s cry – everything you might expect from a camping trip apart from the drizzle and mud.
The perfect Christmas gift for someone who just cannot wait for the return of the long, light evenings of summer."

When - January 2015 -
Weds 7th - Sun 11th
Tues 13th - Sun 18th
Tues 20th - Thurs 22nd

Where - The Pickle Factory, 13 - 14 The Oval, Bethnal Green, E2 9DU

Antto Melasniemi's Finnish Pop-up Restaurant Tënu near Leicester Square

This December two Finns - Antto Melasniemi and Klaus Haapaniemi - have created a pop-up restaurant Tënu at One Leicester Street, just off Leicester Square.  Open from 6pm each day until the 31st (not Christmas Day or Boxing Day), it's bringing the tastes of Melasniemi’s successful Helsinki restaurants Ateljé Finne and Kuurna to London.  See a sample menu here

"Tënu is a conceptual restaurant based on ancient Finnish mythology and folklore.
The restaurant is created by artists and food specialists Antto Melasniemi and Klaus Haapaniemi, the duo behind the travelling food, design and art event HelYes! The new venture is targeted at adventurous Londoners, late-night shoppers and curious travellers looking for a festive destination that goes way beyond the usual Christmas drinks and office parties.
Set against a backdrop story of mythical landscapes with strange creatures drawn by Haapaniemi, the food takes its inspiration from the Eastern part of Finland with local ingredients such as reindeer, berries and mushrooms, following the type of menu served in Melasniemi’s successful Helsinki restaurants Ateljé Finne and Kuurna.
Melasniemi and Haapaniemi are also launching new gin label Tënu, distilled in Helsinki and with a taste risen from ancient Finnish forests and urban wild botanicals."

The menu will change weekly, so keep an eye out in future weeks for fried oysters, rich gumbos and indulgent etouffee - and that's just for starters.
We sure hope you'll join us as we count down to christmas and head into the new year, NOLA style. That's with a bit of jazz, a lot of soul and flavour aplenty."

Grub Club's 'Bring Your Own Christmas' Christmas Lunch near London Bridge

In London on your own?  Then celebrate Christmas with Grub Club & Airbnb and their Sharing Christmas party at lunchtime on Christmas Day.  Tickets are just £5, but you've got to bring a bottle and a dish you've cooked; then everyone can get stuck in.  The event ends at 3.30pm, but I suspect there may be a few heading to the pub after that...

"Bring Your Own Christmas is our solution to snoring in front of the Queen’s Speech. It’s simple: you bring your own dish, a bottle of the good stuff, and join in on what will be an excellent excuse for a party. Any Christmas traditions you want to bring along will be greatly welcomed, but soggy sprouts and Cliff Richard are strictly banned!
This is a perfect opportunity to get stuck into some good grub, pull a cracker with some lovely new people and generally share in some festive fun.
We’ve put together an all-star ‘Sharing Is Caring’ team to make this day extra special: airbnb are very generously providing the space, a beautiful flat in London Bridge, owned by the amazing group Lumiere London.
So join us in Bringing Your Own Christmas (BYOC) and making this a truly amazing event."

'Pulled's Street Food Residency at The Duke's Head in Highgate

The Duke's Head in Highgate is hosting a rotating series of street food traders in its kitchen, to change each month, following on from the year-long run from Bell & Brisket.  For December it's Pulled, who, as the name suggests, specialise in slow-roasted, pulled meats.  Go try some - and while you're there enjoy the Duke's Head's excellent range of beers & other drinks.

"Food enthusiasts, amateur chefs, but most importantly professional fun lovers!! That pretty much explains us and the journey to launching Pulled…..
Simply put we love food (and a little drink or two) and our world is centred around ‘what is for dinner?’ It all started with a recipe for Conchinita Pibil, a very large piece of Pork and a long slow roast – OMG I cannot tell you what a taste sensation it was!!!
The love affair with pulled meats was born!!
Bbq pulled pork has become such a loved and firm favourite, what we wanted to do was take it further with different recipes & meats and I guess make it easier, by simply roasting in an oven (….or perhaps the truth was more, we live in a 3rd floor flat in London, so a slow cooking BBQ was out of the question!!).
After many recipes (and some quite inedible failures) later, many friends tested upon, many kilos eaten, we had the thought of why would other people not love this as much as us? Let’s take our meat to the world!!!! There was only one solution ‘redundancy’ – ok was not really my decision but fact was it meant the idea could actually come to life!!
It truly came to life though when the name ‘Pulled’ was suggested, suddenly there was an almost endless list of laughter inducing (and some really inappropriate) names for menu ideas! It was the perfect mix for us..."

Coors Light's Pop-up Ice Bar in Brixton

It's cold outside, but it'll be even colder this weekend in Brixton at the new Coors Light Ice Bar.  Open from Sat 13th - Thurs 18th, it will serve cold Coors Light and other drinks, plus you'll be lent a cape and gloves to help cope with the -5°c temperature inside.  They also have a cash system of wristbands, so that you won't need to be grabbing bits of metal with your bare fingers when you're inside.  Booking strongly recommended - link here - this one is going to be popular!

"Coors Light, the world’s most refreshing beer, has announced the arrival of the Coors Light Ice Bar to Windrush Square in Brixton from 13-18th December 2014.
Creating the optimum environment to enjoy an ice cold Coors Light beer, Rudimental will mark the launch of the Ice Bar with a private gig for lucky winners of the brand’s recent on-pack competition. The bar will then open its doors to the public from Saturday 13th December.
Upon arrival guests will be welcomed into the Coors Light alpine lodge for a cosy half an hour before venturing into the Ice Bar. Visitors can choose from a refreshing pint of draught Coors Light or a bottle. The more intrepid explorer can choose from a range of super-cool Coors Light cocktails.
Before entering the Ice Bar guests will be wrapped up in thermal capes and gloves, expertly designed to withstand 30 minutes in the -5°c temperatures. Once inside, visitors can chill-out on a choice of ice-carved furniture, touch the iced hand print wall or even get snapped next to a life-sized snow angel.
To make the experience as cool as possible, all guests can purchase drinks using ‘intelligent wristbands’, which can be pre-loaded with funds or topped up at the venue. The bands will also enable wearers to post social media updates to their friends without needing to remove their winter warmers."

When - Sat 13th - Thurs 18th December 2014
12 noon - 10.20pm

Where - Windrush Square, Brixton, SW2  (Near the Brixton Ritzy cinema)
