The Calcutta Canteen Pop-up All Day Indian Cafe off Carnaby Street

Darjeeling Express' Asma Khan is opening a second site as a pop-up just off Carnaby Street, under the name Calcutta Canteen.  It will open as a 3 month pop-up on 28th November at 74 Broadwick Street, as an all-day cafe serving Pau buns, a bread roll similar to a brioche bun, stuffed with four kinds of fillings, cakes from Tarunima Sinha of My Little Cake Tin, and lots of teas, like masala chai.  Really looking forward to this one!

"Just before she appears on Netflix's Chef's Table, Darjeeling Express' Asma Khan has a new venture on the way. This time it's a North Indian and Bengali-inspired all-day café, appearing in Carnaby until mid-February. It first made an appearance in Fulham Market Halls' original line-up.
On the cafe menu will be Pau buns, a bread roll similar to a brioche bun, stuffed with four kinds of fillings. They will be: vegan potato, cashew nut and curry leaves, vegetarian beetroot chop, masala omelette and beef mince, all served with green chilli, coriander chutney and tomato relish. We're told those buns date back to the 16th century when the Portuguese settled in Bengal and Goa and began baking bread.
Being a cafe, the cakes are equally important, so Asma has partnered with self-taught baker Tarunima Sinha of My Little Cake Tin for her cakes. They'll celebrate her Indian heritage with masala chai flavoured bundt cake, Indian spiced shortbread cookies and pistachio biscuits.
As for drinks, the famed masala chai will be making an appearance, as will non-alcohol apple cider and tea from her ancestral tea garden in India, run by her aunt ("started by my great-great-grandfather in 1884 - one of 32 tea gardens he established"). On top of that, there will be a community wall where women can feature seasonal food and more."

When - 28th November 2018 - February 2019
Mon-Sat - 9am-5pm

Where - 74 Broadwick St, Soho, W1B 5PW

Darjeeling Express' 2015 Residency at The Sun & 13 Cantons in Soho

Asma Khan's Darjeeling Express Indian food is now in residence at The Sun & 13 Cantons in Soho, serving Monday - Saturday.  Mon-Saturday is lunch, plus bar snacks until 6pm, while Saturday also has dinner from 6pm - 9pm - bookings required.  Go and tast here amazing dishes, inc Khosa Mangsho Bengali Goat Curry & Chicken Chaap fragrant Calcutta Korma

"Asma Khan has become famous on the London Supper Club scene for her Mughlai cuisine based on recipes, which have been in her family for generations and stem from the royal kitchens of India. She has never written down a single recipe and does everything from memory. This month will see Khan take up residency at Soho pub, The Sun and 13 Cantons, which itself has just undergone an impressive renovation.
Khan’s lunch menu at the pub will be a celebration of authentic cooking from 1930s undivided India. Using local produce, the menu will also feature British seasonal specials alongside Khan’s classics, including:
Typical menu
Kala Channa with Paratha nutty and earthy black chickpeas served with tawa fried flat bread
Paneer Samosa stuffed with Paneer, sweet corn and chopped coriander leaves. Served with chutney
Venison Kofta cooked in traditional “shikar” or hunting spices
Chicken Chaap fragrant Calcutta Korma with garam masala
Hyderabadi Haleem a combination of lentils, wheat and lamb slow cooked for several hours & blended together, garnished with green chillies, caramalised onion, mint and ginger
Khosa Mangsho Bengali Goat Curry with Potatoes
Chicken Rezala Bengali Mughlai stew with lemon, chillies & mint
Baghara Baigan Hyderabadi aubergine in a tangy tamarind base
Bhappa Doi Bengali yogurt cooked in an earthenware pot
Shahi Tukra bread fried in ghee and soaked in saffron infused milk
Khan’s style of cuisine is lesser known in the UK and despite it’s royal heritage, should not be mistakenly associated with the state of Rajasthan. Khan takes influences from her father’s Rajput and North Indian background, as well as incorporating traditions from Calcutta where she was born and raised by her parents. Many a holiday would also be spent at her parents’ancestral home near Chhatari and it was here she learnt some of her favourite recipes from her family’s royal kitchens with family visiting from across North India right down to Hyderabad in the South.
Khan’s Darjeeling Express residency begins at lunchtime on 23rd June at The Sun and 13 Cantons on the corner of Beak Street. Lunch reservations can be made directly by telephoning The Sun & 13 Cantons."

When - From June 2015 -

Tendril's 3 Month Residency at the Sun & 13 Cantons in Soho

Tendril, the vegetarian and vegan pop-up from chef Rishim Sachdeva, is popping up at The Sun & 13 Cantons in Soho from 17th March - mid June 2020, serving Tuesdays to Saturdays.  I visited Tendril when they were in Bethnal Green earlier this year, and was blown away by the flavours.  This is excellent food that doesn't make you miss meat at all.  I love the salads, and also the bigger dishes - can't wait to visit this one again!

"Soho's Sun and 13 Cantons continues its series of very interesting pop-ups (they hosted Darjeeling Express before Asma Khan opened their first restaurant) with its latest announcement - Tendril. It comes from Rishim Sachdeva, previously at Chiltern Firehouse, Almeida and The Dairy and who is now going it alone with Tendril, serving up a plant-based menu, based on British cuisine with a vegetarian/vegan twist.
The Tendril team have been busy popping up across town since starting in Autumn 2019, first in Putney and The Hive in Bethnal Green. The Sun will be their biggest space yet, so as well as promising a lot of work on preserves and homemade vinegars, they've extended the menu with dishes to include:
Sweet corn gnocchi with fermented corn puree.
Crispy mushroom wellington with confit garlic
Hand-rolled pasta with cashew ricotta
Pappardelle with vegan cheese and fresh green peppercorns"

When - 17th March - mid June 2020
Tues - Sat
Open Tuesday to Friday, 12 to 3 pm and 5 to 10 pm;
Saturday 12.30 pm to 10 pm

Where - The Sun & 13 Cantons, 21 Great Pulteney St, W1F 9NG

Sarap Filipino BBQ & Lechon's 3 Month Residency at The Sun & 13 Cantons in Soho

Sarap is bringing Filipino food to The Sun & 13 Cantons in Soho for the first three months of 2019, with a Tuesday - Saturday pop-up.  Serving lunchtmes and evenings on Tuesday to Friday, and from 2pm - 9pm on Saturday, expect some amazing dishes, including lechon - BBQ pork belly - and smal plates to share.  Such a treat for people who work in Soho!

"Sarap Filipino Barbeque and Lechon, which has been trading at Coffee Is My Cup Of Tea in Dalston this winter, will take on a new central London residency in the new year. The current pop-up will end on 22 December 2018.
Ferdinand — ‘Budgie’ — Montoya, the chef-founder of Sarap will arrive at The Sun and 13 Cantons on Beak Street in Soho from January, where he and the Sarap team will be in situ for three months. It is a venue that has served other pop-up ventures well, with Darjeeling Express and soon-to-be Chef’s Table star, Asma Khan, the most well-known past resident at the pub.
Montoya told Eater that Sarap will maintain the current format of small and large sharing plates, and add some extra dessert options. “We now have the luxury of all day access to a kitchen which will allow us to be more creative and adventurous with our food offerings,” he said. “Our lunch menu will revolve around rice plates incorporating some of our regular dishes such as the best-selling lechon liempo and in-house pickles.”
The lechon — Filipino slow-roasted pork belly — with thin, brittle crackling is the dish Montoya wants to push more than any other. The slow cooking at a low temperature ensures that the pig skin does not puff up in the way it does (more often than not) in the British roasted version. It is served with a mound of pickled carrot and daikon, coconut vinegar seasoned with bird’s eye chilli; and a version of the Filipino “all purpose” barbecue sauce — a pork liver, all spice berry, vinegar, and sugar condiment, which serves as the perfect foil to the pork itself.
Elsewhere on the menu, there’s Filipino fried chicken, grilled pork skewers, and kinilaw — citrus-marinated market fish, with alliums and chilli, similar to ceviche."

When - Tuesday 15th January 2019 for 3 months
Tues - Sat
Tues - Fri - 12 noon - 3pm, then 5pm - 10pm
Sat - 2pm - 9pm

Milli's Kitchen's 2 Week Pop-up at The Sun & 13 Cantons in Soho

For two weeks, from 26th October - 7th November 2015 - Milli's Kitchen will be taking over from Darjeeling Express at The Sun & 13 Cantons in Soho, to offer a chance to try her delicious Spanish food, with likely dishes including Pil Pil Prawns, Carrillada (braised pork cheek) and fig, membrillo, fried almond & goat’s cheese salad.  There will also be a supper club on the final night (Sat 7th) - full booking details below

"Milli Taylor, caterer and cookbook author aka Milli’s Kitchen, has announced a two week Spanish pop-up at Soho’s The Sun & 13 Cantons pub while The Darjeeling Express takes a fortnight break from their usual residency.
As a good friend of Darjeeling Express chef Asma, who has been cooking Indian food to much acclaim from the likes of the Evening Standard’s Fay Maschler, Milli hopes to hold the fort and do her proud, whilst she takes this quick break. Milli says: “Hosting Spanish supper clubs has been hugely enjoyable for me and I have been longing to get my paella pans out again. But this year I’ve been so busy, catering like a mad woman, that I haven’t been able to do a single supper club since the one I did for Jamie Oliver in February.”
Having finished catering throughout the summer, including a stint at the Wimbledon Tennis tournament, the event is also a family reunion: “The added bonus for me is that it coincides with the wedding season coming to an end in October (family business in Spain) so it’s the perfect time for me to steal my brother away to give me a hand front of house.”
With dishes promised such as Pil Pil Prawns, Carrillada (braised pork cheek) and fig, membrillo, fried almond & goat’s cheese salad, Milli adds: “Spain is where my heart is, where my family live, and where I always wish I were. Our town is in the Andalucian countryside where the food is simple and honest.”"

Rajiv's Kitchen's Nepali Dining at The Sun & 13 Cantons in Soho

Darjeeling Express' Calcutta Pop-up lunch at The Cinnamon Club

I met Asma from Darjeeling Express a few months ago at one of Edible Experiences' events, and after that she got in touch to ask me to feature a very special event she's hosting - a Saturday special lunch at The Cinnamon Club.  See below for full description and mouth-watering menu!

"One afternoon. One cook. One city of many cuisines and many stories. Many memories that remain with you for life.
From Persian nobility to the British military, the food heritage of Calcutta is a confluence of myriad food cultures and flavours. Embark on an incredible edible journey with Darjeeling Express in the private dining room at The Cinnamon Club, discovering the city’s authentic cuisine transplanted to this stunning London venue.
The setting provides an atmospheric background in which to savour dishes proudly rooted in centuries of traceable heritage. Calcutta’s food is as unique and vibrant as the city herself – a metropolis born from trading villages around the bustling port along the Hooghly River. Each and every traveller and trader community left their legacy in the form of a distinct culinary footprint.
Historically, Bengal has a unique way of recording and telling stories. Since the
15th century, Baul singers’ songs and style have amalgamated Sufi Islam, Tantra,
Buddhism and Vaishnavism. The traditional and exquisite hand-woven Balachuri
saree’s origins lie in a collaboration between the silk weavers of Murshidabad
and the then-ruler of the principality, Khan Murshid Quli. The border of this saree
narrates the legendary stories contained within the Mahabharata.
This afternoon, I am attempting to weave Calcutta’s complex and fascinating story
through my food, and hope you will join me to learn her tale.

The 'Flavour Expats' Supper Club Season at Palm2 in Clapton

This March and April a season of dinners is taking place pairing different sets of supper clubs hosts to create seven amazing nights.  Created by Backdoor Kitchen and some of their friends, each night features two supper clubs with different backgrounds, origins and cuisines, cooking a selection of dishes.  It'll be great for people who want to get a taste of the vibrant supper club scene, and also people who already have their own favourite hosts, but want to see them in a new setting.  Don't miss out!

"They are amongst us, they look exactly like us, you might even work next to them but at night, when kitchen closes, they sneak in through the backdoor and fire up for some of the most interesting food in London. Meet the "Flavour Expats" as the chef behind popular Backdoor Kitchen Italian supperclub, Rob Cenciarelli, gathers upstairs at Hackney based iconic Palm2 Deli some of the most talented chefs in the supperclub for a spectacular culinary challenge.
14 chefs from the East and the West of the world, 7 nights, 2 teams and the one only chance to try the food of two countries yet at the same table. This adventurous journey will unfold over six courses every night. Each pair of chefs will be asked to cook a starter, a main and a pudding shaped around their gastronomic traditions and inspired to the most distinctive flavours of their own countries.
Two Hungry Girls, Backdoor Kitchen, Darjeeling Express, The Candlestick Maker,Yummy Choo Eats, The Pickled Fork and Gastronhome are only some of the names you will find down the path to the ultimate food experience.
The dinners:
1st March: The Pickled Fork – Darjeeling Express (Great Britan VS India)
Chris was the GB captain in some of the major international culinary competitions, now, turned into refined pop up host by his love for snowboard, runs The Pickled Fork. Asma didn’t know how to cook and now roast her own spices and runs probably the most popular Indian supperclub in London. Their menus? Childhood memories to retrieve and a brand new Lamb dish to create.
8th March: Gastronhome – Yummy Choo Eats (France VS Mauritius)
Christopher and Damien are two ex-Ritz enfants terribles on a mission to spread authentic regional French cuisine with no fuss over London. Selina is the ambassador of Mauritian cuisine in London with her pop up experience now featured in almost all main national magazines. Their menus it is all about creating the best marinate and plate up the most succulent chicken dish.
14th March: Backdoor Kitchen – The Hungry Hakka (Italy VS China)
Rob and Wen have been knowing each other since they started their adventure in London underground food scene. Rob runs the perennially sold out BDK supperclub. Get ready for some of the best Pork belly you ever had!
29th March: The Pickled Fork - Tacochu (Australia VS Japan)
Alex cooked his way through the best kitchens of the world by surfing on the Australian coast and snowboarding down the Alps. In the meantime he cooked for the Royal Family and President Obama. Now he co-hosts The Pickled Fork pop up. Erica knows the secrets way of Japanese cuisine as the back of her hands and her overcrowded events can only tell us more how Tacochu pop up is the next thing to eat. 12th Squid and the ultimate meat galore are the themes of the night.
5th April: The Candlestick Maker - Bunta BBQ (England VS Vietnam)
Ian is the pastry chef who turned into a supperclub hosts who eventually became the director and head chef of Cult Events, the pop up lab behind events such us Pisco Fuego. She now runs Bunta BBQ, introducing the magic of Saigonese food on the streets of London.
12th April: 7th Floor Supperclub –Pepe’s Kitchen (Italy VS Philippines)
Lucia was born and bred in London, but her heart is in Italy where her Nonnas taught her the most traditional Italian cuisine. She runs the successful 7th floor supperclub. Tendril Kitchen's 2021 Residency at The Sun & 13 Cantons in Soho

Chef Rishim Sachdeva's Tendril Kitchen opens at The Sun & 13 Cantons on Tuesday 18th May 2021, serving Tuesday - Sunday for the next 6 months.  Rishim describes it as 'a (mostly) vegan kitchen' and the food comes bursting with flavour, including a chipotle grilled oyster mushroom bun, and a stunning ratatouille.  I've been a fan of Richim's cooking since first meeting him at a pop-up in Bethnal Green in early 2019, and his home deliveries during the various lockdowns were vital to my health and sanity!  I'm so looking forward to being able to eat at his table again.

"Award-winning chef Rishim Sachdeva (previously the Dairy, Chiltern Firehouse, the Fat Duck) will this month launch his first solo venture ‘TENDRIL’, a six-month (mostly) vegan chef residency at Soho institution the Sun & 13 Cantons.

Taking over the kitchen at the iconic pub for six-months from Wednesday 19th May, Rishim’s much-anticipated Tendril residency (which was put on hold last year due to lockdown) will offer a (mostly) vegan menu showcasing the talented chef’s creative, flavoursome plant-first dishes for which he has become known.

Tendril follows previous notable chef residencies at the Sun & 13 Cantons from the likes of Asma Khan (Darjeeling Express), Mandy Yin (Sambal Shiok) and Budgie Montoya (Sarap), who have since gone on to enjoy success with their permanent restaurant sites in the capital.

Tendril’s launch menu focuses on the abundance of fresh, seasonal produce found in the UK at this time of year, taking inspiration from Rishim’s enviable restaurant kitchen experience in both London and India, and the food he likes to eat at home, having been a (mostly) vegan himself since early 2019.

Offering a host of veggie bar snacks and small plates, through to larger mains and a short dessert selection, dishes include ‘Grilled squash, red pepper paste, crackers & summer slaw’ and ‘Purple corn tostada, broad bean “guac”, piquillo pepper & artichokes’, alongside non-vegan options such as ‘Baked brie, burnt honey, preserved lemon, truffle mascarpone & cranberry bread’. Main dishes lead with ‘Chipotle grilled oyster mushroom, smoked leek & peanut sauce’ and a Tendril signature ‘Ratatouille, basil puree, ras el hanout & herb crumb’ (small plates from £9, mains from £14). Guests can choose to order a la carte, or opt for the Tendril ‘discovery’ set menu, which includes a snack, the choice of two small plates, one main and a dessert for £29 per person."
